Rivoli strives to be a hands on, moderately priced restaurant with simple and creative food, carefully selected wines and comfortable service in a warm and lively atmosphere. Rivoli’s distinction comes from the heart and soul of its owners and staff. The menu relies on what is seasonal, local and fresh, using mostly organic produce, sustainably caught fish and naturally raised meats and poultry. "The service at Rivoli is sublime and that in itself is what takes a nice experience with very good food over the top. The wait staff, kitchen, and sommelier work together seamlessly to adapt to the diners' needs, allowing sufficient time to enjoy drinks and appetizers but never delaying too much. That kind of timing is hard to achieve and is what distinguishes the restaurant."

"The food was nicely prepared. The chef had not gone to great pains to create out of this world type of food but she had done her homework and the flavor combinations she offers are very palatable and somewhat unique. The only drawback was the service. They have these guys in suits wandering around generally justifying their jobs - moving chairs so they are exactly spaced and placed, opening wine bottles. Which in and of itself isn't strange. The strange part was when one of them came to our table to adjust our plates as we were eating. They didn't really need adjusting it's just that there was obviously a very specific way they wanted each table to look so as soon as ours was a bit off they came to right it. Strange."

"Upon arrival we mentioned our reservation and waited less than 5 minutes in their front bar area. We were then seated on a table with a view of their outside garden. For appetizer the Portobello Mushroom fritters are a great option to share. They are moist in the inside with a crisp exterior. Dinner was better than expected. On the menu the yellowtail fish seemed like a basic dish, but it tasted beyond. The lamb shank and lasagna were our other two entrees, which were good portions and tasty. Our dessert was a chocolate pudding, which had lots of chocolate making it even better. The décor of the restaurant might be in need of a upgrade soon. The walls and roof needs a makeover. Service was very attentive. Would definitely go back."

"Rivoli is an amazing restaurant. Their famous mushroom fritters are not to be missed, but I've never been disappointed by anything I've ordered. The wine list includes many fabulous wines - the staff are very knowledgeable and usually have a say in what we drink with dinner! The space is small and the tables are close together, but it's a small price to pay for such excellent food in the East Bay."

"We don't eat here often because it's over our budget but the food is delicious and imaginative. It gets noisy when the room is full and we don't like that but others seem to love it. There's a beautiful small garden out the back window that adds a lot to the ambience which is warm and casual. We appreciate that the entrees come with vegetables."

"If you are going for a romantic dinner or a private business meeting, forget it. The tables are way too close together. It's difficult not to hear the conversation of the patrons next to you. The entrance to the restaurant and the bathrooms are also very unappealing.

"The food was superb...we were celebrating my 50th and wanted something special. We especially loved the ahi appetizer. We were also delighted by the quality of service.
Too bad it's so hard to secure a reservation during normal dining hours...we have to go super early or much too late. How does one go about making reervations at 7:00 pm? I looked months in advance for this hour, with no luck. Ah well...we'll continue to go early and enjoy the heavenly food."

"We've been going to Rivoli for special occasions since it opened 15 years ago. It's one of our favorites -- we may even prefer it to Chez Panisse Cafe. We love the view of the garden out back, too. The prices are upscale without being ridiculous. And the food is always wonderful."

"All dishes (lamb stew, tenderloin, roast chicken)well thought out, meticulously prepared and seasoned and cooked to perfection. Service was excellent -- cutlery replaced instantly, as needed; food came out on time and exactly as ordered; dishes well plated..nothing forgotten. All evidence of an excellent kitchen and well trained staff. A flawless meal (for all four of us). This remains a cozy neighborhood restaurant -- tasteful but not fancy. "Again, Rivoli excels!! However, there were two areas that were a disappointment. First, the Spaghettini with Shrimp was a huge huge disappointment. I was in shock because everything else I've tasted at Rivoli excels. This dish was not tasty and other than the meager amount of shrimp and clams, it did not show how wonderful this dish could be. I've had this at many other restaurants and this was the first time, I did not finish the food. We ordered another appetizer to make up for the Spahettini The second thing was the coffee. It was watered down. It could not be saved with cream and sugar.

Overall, I loved my meal at Rivoli's, but will never order the coffee or the Spahettini type dishes. It could have used more flavoring."

"The six of us left Rivoli slightly underwhelmed. Steak was overcooked, lamb was tough; my shrimp was cooked perfectly but the pasta surrounding it was unremarkable. The fritters were good. As this was a 25th anniversary for my husband and I, one of our friends brought 3 bottles of wonderful wine. Rivoli charged us $25 corkage on each bottle, although their website specifies that corkage is $20. I'd never go back here, unless someone else insisted AND they were picking up the tab and tip."

"This is our second dinner at Rivoli. The food - appetizers, main dish, and desert - have been flawless on both occasions. The service is wonderful - not overdone or pretentious, but the wait staff is gracious and willing to answer any question. I'm not a "foodie" but my husband and I do eat out at fine restaurants a few times year and this is by far, the best experience we've had in the last couple of years. We'll definitely be back."

"Every morsel, from appetizers (we had the deep fried mushrooms and the tuna tartare) to the mains (salmon on lentils and steak with gnocchi) to the desserts (apricot cherry crisp and a bittersweet chocolate pave) was heavenly. This restaurant never fails to impress. Waitstaff and maitre d' are efficient but warm and friendly. An outstanding dining experience, as usual."

"I don't usually give glowing restaurant reviews, but Rivoli's food is consistently among the absolute best of the many restaurants in this price range that we know in East Bay and San Francisco. In probably 10 meals there over three or four years, we have never had a dish that was less than very good, truly excellent is the norm, and we feel "oh my God" more often here than at all but maybe one other place in Northern California. This meal was the best we've ever had at Rivoli. In addition, the atmosphere is very pleasant and service always excellent. Unless you don't like this kind of food (check the menu) or want a super-hip, young crowd (this one isn't dowdy, just not super-hip), you will never go wrong here."

"Rivoli has long been our preferred restaurant for special occasions. However, our recent experience was sub-standard: after sitting at our table for some time, we had to snag a server just to get some bread and water although subsequent service was up to par; two of us had the risotto but one serving was hot while the other was barely warm; and all of us had varying degrees of stomach distress later which I attribute to the mushroom fritters we had shared. All in all, a step down from the scrupulous attention to service and food detail that we enjoyed in prior visits."

"Due to my relative infrequency in dining out, I tend to form very vivid, lasting memories of a restaurant after my first visit. The problem is, when I return after a year or so, I am almost always disappointed. Rivoli has been the rare exception for me. I have been there only three times with each visit separated by around a year. Each time I have been absolutely bowled over by their food. I cannot name a single dish that I have tasted there that didn't go above and beyond my high expectations for them. I can still give you intimate details of the first meal I ever had there some 3 years ago. It left that much of an impression on me. Quail with cranberry sauce served with kale and mashed potatoes, Pineapple upside down cake."

"Food was great as it has been on previous visits, wine was nice but two things made the evening disappointing. Tables are too close together, felt as if we were sharing a table with three strangers. Also service seemed a bit off. Our waiter started out with our entees before our appetizers had been cleared and had to beat a hasty retreat back to the kitchen to correct this. I believe there was another glitch with the service as well. Perhaps they are trying to serve too many people in such a small space."

"My first time at Rivoli and I and my partner thought it was just about perfect. We shared the Caesar salad and the mushroom fritter that are justifiably famous. Particularly the fritter. I had the best leg of lamb I'd ever had. She had tagliarini with braised beef bolognese, also very good. We had a good French burgundy. The service was attentive but not fussy. The portions were more than adequate. It's a large square room that seems like it should be noisier than it is. Tables are fairly close together, but somehow this wasn't a problem, either. $105 plus tip."

"We had a fabulous time. The food was really five star. We can especially recommend the gnocchi, the lamb, and the Moroccan chicken. The somellier was very helpful and found us wines that we loved. The service was terrific. We felt really well taken care of. And the coffee and dessert (warm chocolate cake with vanilla bean ice cream) were excellent. The view onto the indoor forest is lovely. It was my sixty fifth birthday and I have to say I had an extraordinary time. This has become our favorite restaurant in the East Bay."

"The service and food were wonderful. Our server paired each course with a glass of wine, which was delicious and right on the money. The view of the garden was lovely. We were there on our Anniversary and the staff were all so sweet, wishing us "happy anniversary" and they even put special confetti in the middle of the table for our arrival. We did feel, however, that the ambiance of the inside of the dining room could be improved. The lighting, wall colors, and decorating were a bit blah. Overall, our experience was a great one and we will recommend the restaurant to others and probably return ourselves."

"We were looking forward to our usual great dining experience at Rivoli. The menu was a bit disappointing - not the "wow" factor nor the "I can't decide, there are so many good choices..." What they did was well-executed, if a bit skimpy on portions. My dinner was appetizer-sized, but the flavor was very good--just wanted more.

My husband's dinner repeated the use of greens underneath the grilled lamb, and it was covered with a mustard aioli that overpowered. More of a salad than a main course. I guess he shouldn't have ordered a salad for a starter....

"A great dining experience which began the moment we entered the restaurant. Though we were early, we were seated right away. Our waitress displayed a good knowledge of the menu and wine list, and cared for us in a friendly way. The water glass was always full. "It's not fair to generalize from one experience, but I'll do it anyway. The service was excellent, the garden backdrop made for a pleasant atmosphere, and the noise level allowed for a lively conversation. My wife thought the corn soup was superb and the mahi mahi good. I thought the fritters were heavy and oversalted. The filo pie was pretty good (a little dry) but its chickpea garnish suffered from the same problems as the fritters. The sorbets were excellent. The creme caramel and the berry buckle were good. This was a good dining experience, but it did not in my estimation live up to the praise found in the Open Table comments. I've had much better dining experiences at Wood Tavern and Soizic."

"We really love this restaurant. I had the seafood ravioli and it was spectacular, and so were the portabello mushroom fritters. My husband was less excited about his ribs, he felt they were good but not exceptional, and his mashed potatoes were too salty for his tastes. He loved the buckle for desert, and I had a very nice hot fudge sundae. The wines recommended were also very good. "Excellent food and service and very pleasant atmosphere. The garden in the rear (no seating) is a very nice touch. Intimate dining room is in the rear (no street noise or view), separate from the small bar and kitchen. It is quieter than the open plan type restaurants, which is nice for those who like to converse without yelling. The appetizer we tried was an interesting mix of flavors and textures, and the main courses were both excellent. We were too full for dessert, unfortunately. The wine prices seem steep, but they always seem steep to me. We will certainly return."
