Rivoli strives to be a hands on, moderately priced restaurant with simple and creative food, carefully selected wines and comfortable service in a warm and lively atmosphere. Rivoli’s distinction comes from the heart and soul of its owners and staff. The menu relies on what is seasonal, local and fresh, using mostly organic produce, sustainably caught fish and naturally raised meats and poultry. "The best thing we had that evening was the smoked seared ahi tuna which was part of an appetizer. The rest of the appetizer was ok, but the tuna was outstanding.
I have my usual complaints about Rivoli: The appetizer portions are small, the over-application of salt by the kitchen staff ruins the uniqueness of dining there* and the server (the female one) obviously had other things on her mind.
My wife and I have eaten at Rivoli off and on for over twenty years. We like the place but it seems to us that the owner and/or manager should have some awareness of what the kitchen staff does to ruin what would be great dishes.

*My wife had ordered the roasted chicken and the collard greens were so salty that she had to ask for another veget"

"The dining room is a warm room, with great attention to visual calm. There are enough warm surfaces so that even with the room full, my companion and I could hold a conversation. The servers were very good. The food was also very good; the cesar salad was outstanding. I love this restaurant; it truly is a gem. A wide range of 'by the glass' wines available, too."

"Rivoli,our neighborhood restaurant, offers consistently delicious dinners, served by extremely attentive and knowledgeable wait persons. The wine list, if ordering a bottle, is extensive, but limited if ordering just a glass of wine. If you want a specific wine, I suggest you BYO and pay the $20 corkage fee."

"Wendy Brucker's Mushroom Fritters are my favorite food on the planet!!! (chocolate being in a category of it's own...) When I eat them I tell my co-eaters not to talk to me so I can focus on the fritters. I only open my mouth to speak after the last delectable bite. Then, I always say, "Wow, that was fantastic. I need a cigarette." (and I don't smoke.)

"The food was fair, we had to make reservations a few weeks ahead of time. And for the life of me I don't understand that, because it just wasn't that good of a restaurant. They've changed the wall paper and it really looks bad. Cheap lights in the dinning room area. We used to go in years past much more. I won't be going back again."

"Rivoli has been one of our favorite restaurants for years; it's become our go-to place for birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. The food is excellent, but not fussy or trendy. The service is super-friendly (though our waitress was a little spacey on this last visit); they'd reserved one of the best tables in the house for us, and sprinkled it with some little celebratory decorations, because we'd noted (in our OpenTable reservation) that it was our anniversary. It's that kind of personal attention--and, yes, the excellent food--that makes Rivoli stand out for us."

"When we arrived we were ignored until we had to ask someone for water and bread. Then a server arrived. We ordered a cocktail from him, but he wanted to get our dinner order at the same time. We had to say "we'll talk about the menu over our cocktails." Once we got our drinks (it took awhile) the service evened out.

Everything we ate was terrific!"

"For many years I have loved Rivoli and we go on very special occasions. This time the occasion was my father in law's birthday. We were seated on time but our dinner order was not taken for 45 minutes! I found this insane given the small size of the restaurant. When my appetizer came I was quite disappointed. It was "portobella mushroom fritters." They were dry and salty and not flavorful at all. My entree was great - a seafood/saffron risotto. One of our I had the salmon which was very good also. We were served our entrees an hour and fifteen minutes after we were seated. Dessert was good but unremarkable. The refurbished dining room is lovely - the effect is a lighter, airy space."

"I, along with a collegue eat monthly at Rivoli. Our most recent visit left a great deal to be desired. The service was terrible. The waiter was inattentive. Don't get me wrong, I don't care for hovering service but our waiter would completely disappear for long stretches of time.
We orderd a salad and a hot appetizer, to share, and the salad came a good 15 - 20 minutes before the appetizer. What made this most amazing is that the restaurant was
about half full.
We'll go again next month and if the services continues to be sub-par we'll have our monthly dinner meetings at another establishment."

"I have eaten at some of the finest restuarants in San Francisco.
My boyfriend and I went to rivoli for our anniversary- the restuarant was beautifully set up with a corner table and romantic view of the garden.The wine list was not impressive - I had two tastings, the second I enjoyed but when the full glass came back it tasted nothing like the sample that I enjoyed. The appetizers fell short of average - heirloom pita salad and mushroom fritters (which everyone raves about) were both dissappointing. I had the seafood risotto -too salty and oily to eat. Pot roast average.

Service was pretty good and they were happy to accept that i sent back the risotto.

Basically save yourself the trip and dissappointment. I dont recommend Rivoli."

"A welcome find for this out-of-town visitor. Other reviews kept saying place X was good, but not as good as Rivoli. So we decided to go with that, and were suitably impressed. Mains were perfect, with stellar choices for the accompanying carb / veg in each case. Hot fudge sundae was perfect closer. And bubbly by the glass at a reasonable price was the clincher. "Traffic on the bridge was terrible so we called the restaurant letting them know we'd be 30 minutes late, and they were super accommodating and said "no problem". I had notified through OpenTable that this was an anniversary dinner and requested a quiet table, and Rivoli came through and gave us a great corner table and even decorated the table with "happy anniversary" decorations with hearts!

The food was great and the prices were very reasonable. I don't think any of the entrees of the night were over $25. We had a very smooth artichoke soup, the biscuit and butter poached shrimp, portabella "fries", pot roast, and stuffed pork loin. Didn't have room for dessert but they looked great. Definitely worth another visit!"

"The ravioli appetizer was wonderful. My salmon was flavored well but undercooked. The succotash that came with it was yummy. My bf had the chicken dish, which as cooked and flavored well. I love the view of their beautiful garden, it gives the place a nice relaxing ambiance as you dine."

"Been going here ever since they opened. A real neighborhood gem! Portobello mushrooms and the hot fudge sundae for dessert are a must. Dined there on 9/6/09. I had the pork roast and my friend had the ravioli. Both very tasty. Only the freshest vegetables and ingredients go into the foods they prepare.

After all these years, I do not notice a slip with regards to the food. I will continue to go back again, and again, and again.

They did a remodel on the dining room. More open and airy now. However, before the remodel, it was very intimate, which I liked more."

"Rivoli is an intimate and warm environment with a lovely view of a garden, but the most important element of Rivoli's charms is the food. This last visit with two friends was no exception, as all of us ordered different entrees and remarked on the quality of each choice. I had a seafood dish on a bed of saffron infused farro, the birthday girl had leg of lamb with potatoes gratin, and the third had tender pork roast with perfectly cooked green beans. We shared a brownie, since we were all too full to order individual desserts. The service is excellent, friendly and helpful. Be sure to mention, when making a reservation, if there's a birthday celebration, as your table will be sprinkled with birthday confetti!"

"It was all very good but my previous experiences here were much more inspiring. Two appetizers, while tasty, were nowhere near sufficient to share among six people. The fabulous duck was not on the menu. I got the lamb, which was delicious, but just a couple of skimpy slices on top of the potatoes and broccoli. My wife had the mahi mahi, which she described as unexceptional. Maybe they spent too much on the remodel and are cutting back on the food - I was perfectly happy with the old place and the fabulous food."

"The remodeled look is smart but still homey. The service was perfect and of course, the food was spectacular. The pork loin melted in my mouth and the polenta and corn side matched it perfectly. The Mahi Mahi with risotto was amazing. Of course, Rivoli's always creates classic desserts such as the Chocolate Fudge Sundae with perfect ingredients. "There were 2 maitre D's and one of them was rude to both of us at different times, the other was quite nice; started us off badly, we had to wait for our table, 5 minutes or 10 i don't mind but this was much longer. It was way too noisy as well. Menu seemed more limited than I remember.

"We have only had one dinner at Rivoli that was below par. The food is usually excellent as well as the service. This time, however, the bussing of the tables was poor. We sat for over five minutes after we had finished eating and finally had to ask the host to have someone remove the plates. Also, the noise level was much higher than usual. I understand that might be addressed when they have finished the renovations they've been undergoing. Otherwise, it's a wonderful restaurant and a pleasure to eat there. For us it's the best in the Bay area."
