"Been coming here regularly since it opened. Tasty Indian dishes, nice location, great staff. Lately have noticed some subtle changes. One, they have scaled back on the number of items on the dinner menu. Hopefully, they will move the other direction. Two, the bartenders seem on the young side, not as versed in cocktails as you would expect for this crowd. Only two brands of vodka. Stoli and Ciroc...Ciroc? Really? Finally, my pet peeve, they used to carry a wide selection of large format Indian beers (22 or 16 oz). Love Indian food with traditional Indian lagers pair so well with it. Flying Horse, Blue Mountain, Taj Mahal. They now carry only one Indian beer (Taj) and only in a 12 oz size. Guys, you really need to re-think this approach."

"The subtle nature of Taramind (we dined early) was most pleasing as was the introduction of the various flavors (cumin, mint, fenugreek and curry) from the papadum to the chocolate ice cream was super! We especially enjoyed the banter with the wait person, all are terrific but Charissa was a real delight.

"Could not be more disappointed. First off, when an "indian" restaurant serves calamari and crab cakes, you know you're not going to get good, authentic Indian. The only good Indian thing on the menu was their raita. The chicken tandoori should have been called BBQ chicken. Nothing tandoori about it. Not to mention the quality of the chicken was pathetic. $24 for 4 pieces of "where on the chicken did this come from". The naan was below average. The currys were plain, simple and boring. The lamb was dry and the butter chicken (makhni) literally came with a half of a breast of chicken.... for $24. I'm embarrassed for the supposedly three star Michelin chef that brought this to Newport from London. I don't expect this place to last long."

"Food was delicious and setting was beautiful. More vegetables would make selections more interesting, and more fusion-like...the lamb kebab was described as inlcluding greens and julienned vegetables, but only had greens. The meat platter offered garbanzo beans as the "fresh vegetable of the day," which made the balance of items too starchy (platter also includes rice, naan, and lentils.) A green veggie would have been a refreshing variation. The chicken and lamb were great, as were their individual sauces."

New to the area, read some reviews online and thought of giving this restaurant a try for Saturday Dinner around 9pm.
First impression at the bar: Not good. The bar tender seemed so not enjoying his work. He ignored us for first 10 min (there were not many poeple sitting in the bar). The drinks were OK, nothing outstanding
Food: We ordered a few things from the menu and none were impressive:
Yellow Lentils, which just ok
Chickpea Curry - Out of a tin, served with some tomato puree and Indian spices. Horrible recipe.
Onion Naan - Was more like fluffed pizza / fluffed pita bread. Did not taste like naan at all.
Paneer cheese Stir-fry - Too much tomato puree, no flavor but tomato taste all over."

"The food was adequate and the service was terrible. A very disappointing special occasion meal. We splurged for the Prix Fixe menu, hoping for some excellent food. The cheese dumplings were tasteless and the chicken tikka masala was average. The shrimp curry was good. Some of the dishes had a good spice (potatoes, scallops) but overall we were very disappointed. We have been to Tamarind IN London and it is a wonderful restaurant. The executive chef there needs to spend more time at this restaurant for it to be worthy of the name. And the service... pleasant but neglectful. We were there for over 2 hours -- and when the check finally came we immediately sent it back for payment as we weren't sure when she would wander back again. T"

"The food was somewhat average and expensive for what was received. I would recommend the Chicken Tikki Masala. I had the lamb curry $29 and wasn't impressed. It was meat in sauce. That was it. No veggie, no rice. They seem to nickle and dime you by having you order rice an an extra a la carte prcing rahther than offer it with the meal. Even the chutney, a condiment, was an a la carte fee."

"This was our second time there. 1st time was outstanding. This time, not so due to really poor service. When our main courses came, they served three at our table of four (we ordered individually), but not me, nor did they deliver any of the three sides we ordered. After a while when my main course did not come, I had to go chase someone to find our waiter, who eventually came. He was apologetic enough, and did comp us two glasses of wine. But as it turns out, my fish had to be fired, and it took a while for it to arrive (the sides arrived more promptly). In the mean time, the three others at the table were finished when my main course finally arrived. It kinda destroyed the experience."

"This was the worst Indian food I have had yet. The curries are pasty. I had the chicken tikka and it was too tomato-y. They overdid it with tomato paste and the texture was also awful. Curries should not be pasty the grilled shrimp was okay. Goat cheese nann was not spectacular, either. Their rice tasted old. Had the paneer chickpea fritters as an appetizer and it was very boring both in texture and flavor. My favorite item was rhe potato chips they give. Will not be going on back."

"As an English couple who live a number of weeks a year in Newport Beach we were ecstatic to find that Tamarind was opening in crystal cove. As Indian food lovers it has been very hard, nigh on impossible to find good Indian food in the area. Tamarind is fantastic, it didn't disappoint ,although we feel that the spice side of the menu is slightly geared towards the Californian palate ie. less spicy than it would be in Tamarind of London. The service has been impeccable bar once when we had a waitress who was obviously having a bad day. I explained to management that the gratuity although given, should be directed in that instance to the staff as a whole rather than the one individual, he was charming and understanding.love the place.!!!!!"

"It is not a right place to conduct business as it is too loud and they do not have a private room. Manager was not very accommodating either. I requested whether he could lower the music a little and he did not want to do it and told me that I could sit outside in the patio. Thanks to Amy and the waitress who went out of their way to make sure we were not cold outside."

"We had a great time! Great food! Our server Anthony was very helpful with the menu. None of us had ever eaten Indian food before. I would recommend the lamb chops and the black lentils. Everything we had was great! We will be back!"

"I had seen this place in the upscale shopping center and thought it was just another expensive restaurant until I read the LA Times review and decided to try it. Tamarind of London did not disappoint. The food was very good, the price was reasonable, and the service was just fine. I agree with everything the critic wrote about. It is not your average Indian food. It is quality, Indian traditional dishes with a California twist. There are also non-traditional dishes that combine the taste of India and California. I recommend it!"

"Given the hype and cost, the setting and service was mediocre at best. The tables were too close and the overall noise level was high. It took over 45 mins to serve appetizers which is quite silly. Given that we went on a Friday evening it was quite crowded but even that is no excuse for the dismal level of service.
We have been to many high end indian restaurants and have no complaints about the indianess of the menu but the setting and taste was certainly not worth the price."

"I dined at Tamarind last year and absolutely loved it! So I reserved a table for my fiancées birthday and it just wasn't the same.. The food was good but last year it was excellent. The service was good. Last year it was very good. Ambiance was just ok. Sorry but I felt the way people were dressed just wasn't appropriate. I thought that Tamarind of London was special the first time e.g. last Feb 2012 and my last dinner on March 22nd did not match up..... The people around the bar were not the type of people I mix with . Not all, just a few... and I don't like sports screens going on while I eat. Overall I would expect for the price a little more thought on the dress code..."

"We throughly enjoyed our dinner. The flavors were subtle yet interesting. Cocktails were interesting and fun. The restaurant had a nice open feel with a views of the kitchen. We are definately going back. The only downside was the reservations were backed up so you had to wait. Not your typical Indian restaurant!"

"I enjoyed the flavors of the food, but was a bit disappointed in the lack of choices for an Indian restaurant. Also, typically, there are condiments on the table. Nothing. Wine was very pricey for the selections. The mango mojito was fine. The feta naan was a bit doughy, but flavorful. The service was attentive. Loved the chocolate covered basil leaf at the end of the evening. That was a nice touch."
