"I made an OpenTable reservation for Sunday brunch, and then received a phonecall from the restaurant to confirm my reservation even though I had already been confirmed through OpenTable. I found this to be annoying and overbearing! Why would I have made reservations if I wasn't planning on coming? By the time we arrived on Sunday, they were able to accommodate a booth for us without having to wait. Our server was only somewhat knowledgeable of the menu; when we asked how many pancakes are served in the pancake entree she replied, "I don't know how many; but they cover the whole plate." When our food arrived, she forgot an appetizer salad that I had ordered, and delivered the wrong entree to my bf (steak and eggs instead of country-fried)."

"Its only minutes from Foggy Bottom metro -a huge plus for those of us on a car free diet. We always go there if we are booked to see something at the Kennedy center, as you can get the free shuttle from outside the metro to the Centre after dinner
The quality of food s always reliable. Good wine list . Good service -not overbearing. Only slight downside is that it can be noisy at peak times."

"District Commons is part of a local restaurant group-- wouldn't the owners be experienced enough to know there are all types of acoustic materials that can be used in interior spaces to absorb sound? DC is all glass and tile and hard surfaces which makes noise reverberate everywhere. It's hard to heard what your dinner companions are saying let alone the waiters. Food is ok, nothing special. If you like Manhattans, get the one made with the bourbon which is blended from 32 different bourbons. A treat!"

"Employees at the State Department mourned the passing of Kinkaids as the only decent place to take someone to lunch. District Commons is a wonderful replacment for a tasty meal with a bit of class. I've eaten here a couple of times and have always appreciated both the service and the food. I can't recall what I ate as a main course but we had a delectibly light bread with a vegatable topping which could have served as lunch. My lunch guest dug into a hefty piece of chicken with mash and looked quite pleased. There are thankfully lots of restaurants around the Foggy Bottom Metro for all budgets and noise levels. This is the most refined and my favorite for a special meal."

"Lots of great variety on the menu -- hard to choose. Good specialty drinks as well as ample wines by the glass and a vast beer selection. You'll definitely find something perfect to pair with your food choices.
Our table ordered the pretzel bread, smoked bacon flatbread, blue mussels, fried oysters and two different salads. Not a complaint on any of the food choices -- all excellent."

"This was my second time to District Commons. I went to celebrate my anniversary. I thought the food was above average (Mountain Trout and Surf & Turf - Steak & Scallops), all very good and the service was good as well. Easy to find something if you are Gluten Free and they could probably make accomodations if you are Dairy-Free as well. Its upscale but fun too with pretzel bread for $2 (no Free bread), flights of beer and comfort food as side dishes."

"My father and I went to District Commons for my birthday dinner. My dad is a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy and is not used to a more complicated menu. Not only did our server help him make a selection, but when the food arrived and Dad was put off, they made a substitution at no charge. It's great when an upscale place goes out of its way to accommodate a customer. The food was delicious, so I'd definitely go back."

"At a conference in nearby Fairmont hotel, needed a walkable venue w/good food. Menu provided very good variety and delivered on taste. Amazing beer choices and a very good wine list, impressive array of U.S. wines, w/a wonderful sauvignon blanc from Washington state I had never tried. "I was very pleasantly surprised by my experience at District Commons. I started with an asparagus "salad" -- essentially a bundle of asparagus spears wrapped in country ham and grilled. The asparagus was cooked perfectly and the ham and vinagrette dressing that had been drizzled around the plate were an excellent match. My entree was the shrimp and grits, and it was positively decadent. I shudder to think how much cream was involved, but it was very tasty."

"We enjoyed our food and wine, but the service was strange. We were the table in the middle of other tables being carefully attended to, but our "waiter" was MIA. The host stepped in and was our server and did a good job. At the end of the meal, it appeared our "waiter" was back on the scene which was a bit odd and uncomfortable. From what we saw from the other tables around us, this is a good restaurant with good service and our experience was definitely not business as usual."

"My husbankd and I went to District Commons for our weekly date night. It was a great choice. The food was delicious. He had the duck and I had the crabcakes. We both shared a bowl of chili which was the best chili I have had...hands down (the bomb!!). You must try the bread with the mustard butter. My husband even order some bread to go. "This was not our first visit to District Commons but it had been awhile. Maybe they have a new chef? I had the mussels again and I was disappointed to find them in a heavy, thick sauce - not at all like the delightful light broth I had last time (I was lured by the word "limoncello" this time.) My husband had some trouble digesting his choice as well. Too heavy. Convenient valet parking and nice kid's menu for our granddaughter. We have always been there early in the evening and the sound level at this time permits conversation with no problem."

"I visit District Commons a few times a month and this is the first time I've experienced such inconsistent service. Server was quite attentive early on but the interest faded away and we had to flag her down a couple of times: first to ask for a dessert menu and later for the check. Service is typically so friendly and attentive. This won't prevent me from returning, but it was a little off-putting as I was hosting colleagues for lunch."

"I had been to District Commons before and thought it would be a great place for pre-theater (Kennedy Center) dinner. We had a reservation, and were seated promptly, but it took a LONG time for a server to come - and when one did it was the hostess or manager or someone. Once we got our waiter, and she found out we were going to the theater, we were out of there a little TOO quickly. Not a great night for us there. My husband enjoyed his on tap cider and his chicken dish, but half of my rib-eye was so fatty I couldn't eat it.
We will give this place another try and hope for the best. Not sure I'd recommend it until we had another good experience."

"We went for my graduation and the waiter was a complete and total jerk. We were ignored until I asked a manager to find the waiter and he did not bring us water or ask for our order. When I tried to get his attention, he waved me off and left and did not return. After him speaking rudely to us, I complained to the manager who was very sweet and tried to help but the whole evening was tainted and I will not return. Also- avoid the salmon flatbread- it's served cold and not very good."

"Food was good, not great. Menu unimaginative for the prices they charge. I would go back if I needed a lunchtime restaurant in that location but I'd look for other restaurants first."

"The service was awful. For my group of 3, the waiter was initially very friendly and chatty and tried to talk us into getting a bottle of champagne ($80) when we asked for three glasses ($16 each) for our light drinking group. I said no, several times, and from that point on he pouted the whole evening and barely said a word to us. Our main courses came while we were still eating our appetizers--they just plopped them on the table and pushed our appetizers against the wall. They tried to take our main course plates away while two of the three of us were still eating--literally we had forks in hands and in our mouthes, with food still on them. And this was at 8:15 on a Wednesday night. No one was waiting for the table."

"As a fan of two of the Group's other restaurants (DC Coast and Acadiana), I expected more ambiance. Commons is just that - common. It seems appropriate for GW students; but, it is decidedly un-adult. I was there for brunch and, while the food was very good, it was very much un-brunch like. They had a full house and so, I will excuse the mediocre service. I would give them another try; but, lunch only."

"This is my third time at DC. Nice place, good location, service is good and noise level is high. The problem is the food. Not great. The fish was overcooked, the "huevos rancheros" are more like a soup, and the steak simply did not taste well. Five people and just about nobody was impressed."

"I went to a 1 pm lunch so it was not so crowded and loud as it can get. Given the modest crowd the service was only so so.
The short ribs "burger" was great. The sorbet was forgetable and it was the blandest of bland Arnold Palmers."
