Locally owned and operated, TAVERN ON SOUTH is a casual, yet sophisticated restaurant and bar located in the shadow of Lucas Oil Stadium and just a short walk from Victory Field as well as the Convention Center and downtown business district. Our menu is focused on seasonally inspired selections utilizing fresh, quality ingredients. Our well stocked bars feature regional craft beers on draft making TAVERN ON SOUTH a favorite spot for a refreshing beverage.
Our two-story, brick building built in 1910 features a warm, inviting interior that includes a bar and outdoor dining on both levels. The second level deck that looks out to the downtown skyline is the best seat in Indy, perfect for catching some sun over the lunch hour or dining with your friends on a beautiful Indiana evening. "The host seemed annoyed that someone had walked in. He never greeted us. When he took us to our table he saw that there were menus on the table already so he just showed us the table and walked away. Never said a word. After ten minutes the bartender finally came over to wait on us. She was very friendly and helpful, but wasn't able to offer very good service because the rest of the staff seemed unwilling to help her. They were more content with standing or sitting and watching the bartender work. The food was decent, but the sea bass was not cooked all the way through."

"My husband saw Tavern from the outside and asked "How did you find this place?" with an small air of "Um, this looks less than inviting." The building is surrounded by an area that looks more industrial than neighborhoody. But walking inside, the atmosphere is casually inviting, the service was excellent, and the food is delicious. Their beer offerings are locally driven and large enough to accommodate many different tastes. I was pleasantly surprised."

"I wanted to dine at a restaurant that had a good atmosphere, good food and an area conducive to a group of 8 people for a lunch meeting. The sceen was interesting with a unique cosmopolitan with old world flare which was unique. The two levels offered various views of the city. The food was great! I struggled with the choice of the Portobello triple decker sandwich and the broiled tilapia sandwich. I chose the tilipia and enoyed every bite! The onion remoulade complimented the fish quite well. I coupled the sandwich with the sweet potato waffle fries - Delish! My meeting partners enjoyed the spicy bean wrap,the bison burger and the herb french fries. This place was suggested to me by a co-worker and I am glad she suggest it!"

"The food had very good presentation but was lacking true flavorful combinations. We had the Duck Wing appitizer with the Hickory BBQ sauce. Very salty and the table did not fishish them. I had the Sea Bass which wasnt bad, but seemed to be missing something. Simply, my expectations were higher. Service was slow and not very attentive. Its not that i wouldnt go back, but it would not be a top pick."

"Everytime I eat here, I find a new love! The fact they have a gluten free bun really makes it one fo my favorit restaurants! I can have a cheeseburger with bacon and really enjoy my lunch! "Enjoyed a nice dinner at Tavern on South. Looking forward to returning. My husband had the salmon and was happy with his meal. I had the meatloaf and was surprised by the great flavor. Menu had traditional bar food, but it all had a nice signature 'kick'. Really liked you could have a true entree or traditional sandwich. Casear salads were very good. Lots of items on menu I would like to try, requested table by TV airing 'The Masters', got it. Sound off TV, but music played was not too loud to interupt conversation.
Went upstairs to check out area. Nice outdoor deck. Will be back when it warms up to take advantage of great downtown views from their upstair balcony. Not your usual bar food, and area that allowed kids.

"Overall a good experience. Nice restaurant hidden near Lucas Oil Stadium. Two people in our party ordered the Caeser Salad- VERY heavy on the dressing. Good flavor, just drenched in dressing. Meatloaf was very tender, pistachios added an unusual crunch. Decent wine, beer and specialty drinks selection."

"The food was amazing and prepared exactly how we ordered it. I had the surf and turf and the lobster was amazing and the beef was medium rare and tender and juicy. They have $10 off bottles of wine on Wednesday so we got a bottle and it was a great value. Special deals every day of the week. Definitely will be going back."

"Great food and drink options using locally sourced ingredients. My date had the prime rib and I had potato-crusted tilapia. Unfortunately my tilapia was not cooked correctly the first time around, but the error was correctly immediately and brought back to the table by the chef - it was wonderful once made correctly! A gluten-free menu readily available was a nice plus for us.
It is a sports bar, right in the shadows of Lucas Oil Stadium so it isn't a quiet restaurant, but we knew that in advance. We very much enjoyed our dinner."

"We've had lunch and dinner at the Tavern many times and always had great food and service but this trip was disappointing. They've made some menu changes since we last had dinner there and both of my favorites are now gone. My husband was happy with the smoked prime rib that he often orders but what I ordered instead of the steak that I wanted was not very good and not worth the money. And the cocktail I ordered before dinner was served "neat" instead of "up" as I ordered it. I'm sure we'll give them another try but, after this one unhappy experience, we'll see how the next visit goes before we write them off."

"Our party of four enjoyed our experience at Tavern on South except for the constant loudness from a nearby table of women. Our server was very attentive and pleasant. Our food was very good and well presented. Unfortunately, the noise level from a nearby table is what we remember most. After being seated next to this loud table, we even moved on our own to the next table over. I might also mention that the available parking was not sufficient for the restaurant. We arrived for our 5:30 dinner reservation to find no parking at the restaurant. We had to pay at a parking garage about a block away. One of the advantages to this restaurant choice was the on-site parking."

"Ordered braised beef tips which were almost red [tough]. I like well done, so it was my error, but I think waitress should ask the same on beef items. Sometimes you can tell client expectations by the way they are dressed. My wife and I were dressed for a quiet special occasion and were seated by 2 tables of green clad T-shirt party-revelers; the noise they made ruined the night."

"We have been to Tavern on South several times, but had never had dinner, only lunch, and appetizers and drinks. That is why we decided to have dinner this time. We figured if the other experiences were nice, then dinner should be as well. We love eating outside in season, but the atmosphere inside is wonderful as well, with its history and decor. The parking is of course a plus. We always recommend Tavern to our friends. We will of course be back."

"We have wanted to try Tavern on South for quite some time, and thought the Devour Downtown would be a good opportunity to check it out. Unfortunately, the wait staff seemed very disinterested and inexperienced. She would come to our table and just stand there, not saying anything. The food was mediocre. The beef tenderloin on the Devour menu was severely undercooked, leaving us with very little appetite."

"Very good food, and our server was especially pleasant and attentive. We went early and the noise level was fine until the restaurant filled up, at which point it was pretty noisy. We were glad to be at a table and not in the bar area. Devour Downtown menu looked good, but we had two of the standbys instead, and they were great with plenty for leftovers."

"I've been to Tavern on South several times. The last couple of times, parking was difficult. The service in the bar area was a bit lacking; she seemed to prefer flirting with a group of men at the bar rather than take my order. I asked for my check and had to wait 10 minutes for her to get it -- from a machine that was within 10 feet of me -- while she wiped down the bar (near the group of men). The food was good, though."

"We were so disappointed - it was a Sunday night and they were running a promotion to promote downtown but they wern't prepared for guests. They didn't have two of the liquors they offer on their drink list - they didn't have salmon which was on the special list for the night and it was 7 PM not midnight. They were out of one of the special desserts they offered on the promo night and the one we finally SETTLED on they had to go to the local grocery to purchase bannans to make our dessert. AND the thing that just made us feel like they did not want us there - they started picking up chairs and putting them on tables all around us and CLEANING the floor with ammonia - we finally told the waitress the smell was terrible."

"Our food was delicious. Steaks perfectly cooked with just the right seasoning. The yellow-fin tuna was outstanding. Creme brulee was perfectly crunchy on top with a smooth texture. The service was okay but without much connection. Our server could have been friendlier. We felt our table wasn't that important to her. The restaurant has a very historic feel and makes one want to cozy up for the evening. We will definitely make a return visit"

"Our reservation coincided with many events happening (Disney on Ice, Monster Truck, etc.) as well as Devour Downtown. Therefore parking was nearly impossible (as we ended up parking illegally just to get into the restaurant). The atmosphere and service were wonderful. However, the food, albeit tasty, had issues such as: my tenderloin was served cold and my wife's salmon was overcooked and therefore a bit dry."

"The waitress was efficient and refilled drinks and removed empty dishes but she said little and smiled only when we were done. The main course was served while we were eating our salads. My potatoes, lobster tail, and beef were only slightly warm and the other meals were also cold or barely warm. They did warm them up a little after we complained but to me being served cold food is a deal breaker.

"My husband and I dined at the restaurant during devour downtown. We both ordered from the devour menu. The beef tenderloin was not hot and tasted very bland. The side of sweet potatoes and regular potatoes were not fully cooked. We both ordered a lobster tail on the side. It lacked flavor and tasted as if it were frozen. Sadly, the spinach salad and bread were the best part of the meal. We were so disappointed in our experience. It was not worth the price we paid!"
