Mushrooms are the heart of what we do at the Joel Palmer House. We have always endeavored to obtain seasonal and local ingredients and we use many locally produced greens, herbs, and vegetables, some of which come from our own culinary garden. We are frequently inspired by ingredients found in the cuisines of France, China, Thailand, Poland and India, so we call our cooking "freestyle." Our dishes pair well the celebrated wines of Oregon, especially Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. Our extensive, Oregon-focused wine list has been awarded the Best of Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator. Of special note, The Joel Palmer House ranks as one of Oregon's finest historic homes and is on the National Register of Historic Places and the Oregon Historic Register. Built in 1857, the house is Dayton's oldest standing structure. When weather permits, guests can enjoy their dinner on our outdoor patio, soaking in the last rays of sunshine in the heart of Oregon Wine Country.
"The food was fantastic and absolutely exquisite. Not being a huge mushroom fan, I was worried I wouldn't enjoy my experience as much as the rest of my family. I was wrong!"

"The Servers were professional, kind, and knowledgable. The Filet Mignon melted in my mouth. The bread that comes with the meal was soft and fresh...and we especially enjoyed the accompanying butter with it's cracked salt on top. We ate outside in the garden...it was pleasant, quiet, and the music in the background was just right (the genre and the volume). The food quality and the service was outstanding."

"We came out to Willamette to tour wine country with my sister as a graduation present and celebrated with dinner at the Joel Palmer House. Each course was exceptional, with my filet mignon with foie gras as the creme de la creme, in my humble opinion. We tried just about every course on the menu with our four-person table each ordering a different course as a part of the three course meal. The sommelier, Andrea, helped us find some great value in the wine list and was very in-tune with which Pinots were drinking beautifully. Everyone left with a full belly and a smile!"

"Abandon all hope ye who enter My family has been going to "Joe's Mushroom House" since well before they moved it to Oregon from Pennsylvania. My dad has made several special trips from the Midwest to visit it again before he died. My wife and I decided make the trek from Seattle to see if it was still worthy of a trip. In short, it was not worthy of a trip from McDonalds. The recipes were bad and cooked improperly. The service was annoying and amateurish (no doubt due to the automatic 18% tip included—very low class). The sommelier used the price of the wine as the guiding factor for its quality. . BTW the beef stroganoff was heavy cream with an under cooked filet served over rice—no flavor, no imagination, no skill. I would have en"

"The service at the Joel Palmer House is relaxed but attentive to your every need. The wine list is amazing and the staff knowledgeable to help with selection. The atmosphere is elegant and restful. There are gluten free choices and variety of meats and fish. This is a great place to dress up or wind down after a day of sightseeing or wine tasting in Yamhill County."

"The occasion for our dinner outing was our 25th Anniversary. Both my husband and I love to cook and eat good food, my standard for a good dining experience is if the meal I'm buying is better than what I could make at home, the Joel Palmer House was all this and much more!"

"If you like mushrooms this is a must stop in Oregon wine country. If you don't like mushrooms it is difficult to eat around them. The soup and tart were amazing for the first course. The candy cap mushroom dessert is a must. Absolutely wonderful."

"Overall an excellent experience. Started with taste of Carrot Tartare, followed with Mushroom soup, then a side order of Foie Gras and the main course of Beef Stroganoff. All these items, including their house Pinot Noir, were excellent. The cheesecake dessert was OK (not sweet enough for us). Definitely recommend it."

"The Joel Palmer House is a MUST if you love excellent food that features mushrooms and mainly local ingredients. The food, service, ambiance and total experience was a delight that stayed with us for days. Each course was more unbelievable than the previous one - all the way through dessert."

"This place sets the standard against which all others should be judged.
The menu offered a nice variety of great dishes. I ordered the Elk, my wife ordered the beef stroganoff both were excellent. The prices were less than what similiar restaurants would charge and the quality of the food was greater. The amuse bouche of carrot tartare was simultaneously innovative and unforgetable -- but the chef not only shared how to make it with us, we heard him describing how to make it to others. The wild mushroom soup with the mushroom drawn with cream -- another hit!
The service was attentive without being smothering. We were covered by a team of people, Charles and Andrea were great beyond expectations."

"A beautiful meal, featuring mushrooms of all kinds. Great for me (vegetarian) and great for him (loves steak). Very romantic, sweet experience, not to mention amazing food and cocktails! Wine list featuring local wineries, nice since we're from Sonoma and wanted to try Oregon wines. Cannot recommend enough!"

"Our meal was excellent. Highly recommend the mushroom tart appetizer, sturgeon entree, and flan dessert being served as a 3-course meal on 2/9/13. We both had the sturgeon and it was delicious and perfectly cooked to be moist and tender. My dining partner thought it was a little too spicy, though. The service was attentive, only glitch was my deciding to wait on ordering my dessert until after the meal, which apparently confused the wait staff and resulted in a slight delay, but once the issue was known it was resolved very quickly. We can't wait for the next special occasion to go back and enjoy the wonderful food and service."

"I and my husband had a lovely evening. The service impecable, just quick enough to not be left hungry and slow enough to have leisure time to enjoy the ambience and tastes.
My first bites of each: the mushroom tart, my husband's soup, the sturgeon entree and the cheesecake dessert, and an amuse bouche left me with a savoring "yum! reaction. The elk entree of my husband's was more mixed, the meat tender, flavorful in a light flavored sauce, oversalted lentils a single, minor flaw. The setting is rural Oregon lovely, its quite a drive from Portland, and so in winter extremely quiet on our weekday evening, but the restaurant made it worth the drive with a Spring discount rate for prix fixe. Go!"

"Everything was perfection. The food was out of this world. The mushroom soup was unlike anything I have ever tasted; rich, dark brown and flavorful. This is a high point to any visit to Oregon's wine country. The owner came out to visit everyone, and he was a delight!"

"My husband, 19 year old daughter, and I all chose from the tasting menu. The fresh bread, still warm from the oven, was crusty and moist. We all ordered the mushroom soup and thought it was too salty, though we enjoyed the velvety consistency. We agreed the carrot "sashimi" was singularly delicious. That tiny morsel was probably the best thing I've eaten in the last year. My daughter loved her elk steak in pinot noir reduction. My sturgeon was overcooked and dry. My husband's beef stroganoff was delicious and garnished with Oregon truffles. The wine steward rose to the challenge presented by our entrees, recommending, a fruit-forward pinot noir that pleased us both. The large cups of pot du chocolate were delicious & extremely rich."

"We had Chef Christopher's 7 Course Mushroom Madness dinner and a 1994 local pinot noir and it was amazing! We highly recommend it. A quiet week night with almost private dining as we were the only peeps in the entire restaurant for the last half of our dinner. It was our first time there and we'll definitely be back. Yum!"

"Their long experience with the family tradition of hunting and cooking wild mushrooms to perfection makes them a restaurant that is worth going out of the way to find. Winter is truffle season, and we had the exquisite pleasure of generous truffle embellishments to most of the dishes we chose. The prices are on the high side, but they are not unreasonable considering the cost of the ingredients and the expert treatment they receive in Chef Czarnecki's hands. Highly recommended to anyone who loves mushrooms/truffles/superb cuisine in general."
