The Oakwood Canadian Bistro
The Oakwood Canadian Bistro, a casual neighbourhood room specializing in down-to-earth Canadian fare. The Oakwood Canadian Bistro's food philosophy is focused on fresh, house-made dishes crafted from locally sourced products. The seasonally changing menu caters to market availability and the sustainability of the products. All meats are organic, local and free of hormones and antibiotics, while the seafood is sustainable, seasonal and Ocean Wise certified. From the breads and pastas to the butchery and sauces, all products are made in-house with quality and consistency.The Oakwood Canadian Bistro serves fresh, honest food in a casual neighbourhood environment. "Oakwood is an absolute neighbourhood gem! I'd love to keep it secret but the food is absolutely incredible. Each dish is well conceived, beautifully presented and tastes incredible. The staff, on each of our visits, have been friendly without being overly attentive. They all seem to have excellent knowledge of the food and ingredients and seem to have a real feel for each of their customers needs."

"My wife & I had been looking for a place to spend our anniversary and had heard good things about the Oakwood. The decor has been very well-chosen and ambiance is comfortably Canadian without being over the top. A very cool space!
I was impressed by both the wine list and their inventive cocktail menu (I recommend the deliciously clever 'Smoking Barrel') and the dinner menu was very intriguing as well. The portions are designed to be shared and we ordered two larger dishes (the arctic char & the flatiron steak) and one smaller one (the fried octopus) which were all delicious and enough to satisfy. We ended with the maple lemon meringue for a sumptuous dessert and were sold on this being a new favourite. A fantastic evening out!"

"This visit the food wasn't as good. Things tasted over salted and greasy. The kale salad was over dressed and soppy. The flat iron steak had a funny TASTE I COULD NOT IDENTIFY. ODD ENOUGH FOR ME TO STOP EATING IT. The bone marrow was good. The poutine didn't have enough potatoes. The tuna was fine."

"Finally!! An indie restaurant with great food and amazing service!!!
I'm so tired of being snubbed and rudely (not) waited on by servers, hostesses and managers in the new wave of indie restaurants. Oakwood is not one of those - the food is wonderful and the service matches it. I went twice this past week, for dinner and for Mother's Day brunch. The dinner was very good - beautiful plating, although the delicate plating had made the food lukewarm to slightly cold. The brunch was divine and the service from the servers to the managers was unbelievable. I'm so happy this place is around - can't wait to try their new innovations!"

"First time to restaurant but read many good reviews. Came on a Friday night with some friends. Was seated at the communal table in the middle of the restaurant.
Like other reviews, the menu items are meant for sharing. We ordered mussels, warm kale salad and poutine to start. These were all highly rated based on previous reviews and they are correct. All 3 portions were reasonable size and could be shared. Tried the tagliatelle. The portion was much smaller and was just okay. Ordered dessert (trio of mason). This is a good choice for those who can't decide as it has all 3 desserts from the menu. Overall good food and nice ambiance of the restaurant."

"I chose this restaurant for a farewell dinner for a friend from Korea. I wanted her to experience Vancouver's food culture, and I think the Oakwood is a great example of that. The dishes were well prepared, the plating was creative, but not overly fussy. And above all, the flavours were dynamite.
Also, they make a fantastic bourbon sour!
We went as a group of six and had friendly, helpful service throughout our meal. I really appreciate establishments that promote quality over quantity, so I'll definitely be back."

"I was surprised at how much I didn't like my visit today. This is my 4th time at the Oakwood and all the other times I have been blown away. I don't know what did it to me this time, but it just wasn't good enough for me. I found the current menu kind of boring like there wasn't much to choose from. However, I don't eat beef or pasta and three of their mains were such. I will always go back as they change their menu often, but last year summer time was their best menu so far - duck duo, shortribs, and another steak dish (friends had the last two). Their desserts are also excellent, however the nanaimo bar dessert had huge pieces of coconut that totally turned me and my buddy off. Service is usually excellent and it was lacking today too."

"My friend and I come to the Oakwood regularly and it was one of our favourite places. Unfortunately, it seems as if the restaurant is saving on both quality and quantity:
1. Quantity
For example the desert -- it was usually served in larger jars, now they are half the size. Also the poutine is now less sizable.

The food appeared to be prepared with less care. The apple crumble for instance is now prepared differently. It seems like they used only apples and some granola mix.

"First time eating here and it was awesome. The atmosphere was nice; the wood finishes and wall mounts made for a unique, rustic look. It was a bit noisy though, but that's hardly a deal-breaker. The food was excellent, we ordered nearly everything on the menu and it was all delicious. The kale salad and raw tuna was especially good. The portions were a bit small, but were enough to be filling. The service was friendly and prompt considering how busy it was. They also gave good advice with the beer. Would definitely recommend this place!"

"I go here way too often, mostly for the outstanding burger and poutine. But went with a few friends and decided on finer dining. My flat iron steak with sunchoke chips, chimichuri and roast bone marrow was just incredible. My friends' mussels, arctic char and cornish game hen were equally impressive. As was the dessert trio. "Had a great time at the Oakwood. The food that was good, was spectacular. Namely, the poutine, the burger, and the kale salad. They were all exceptional.
The failure was the 30-day aged steak. It was $42 and all-round poor. It was cooked improperly, the flavour was bad and it was served cold.
The other items were so good though, that they made me forget the steak.
Service was okay. Wasn't exactly happy with it, and that is why it got the low rating there."

Struggled to find anything wrong with our experience. I couldn't believe there could be so many good reviews but the place definetly lives up to its exceptions.

"I had wanted to check out the Oakwood for a while as I've seen mediocre restaurants come and go from the spot that it's in, but this one seemed to be sticking around. So it must be good. My husband and I went for a belated Valentine's Day and it was fantastic! The food was superb and different. Everything had a unique flare, and was cooked to perfection. They even ask you how you like your burger! That to me speaks to the quality of the beef that they make their fabulous burger with. My husband said it was the best burger he's ever had in his entire life - and he's had some pretty fancy burgers. We will definitely be returning to check out more of the menu!"

"Went on Valentine's Day and shared a fabulous prix fixe menu. The albacore tuna appetizer and dungeness crab ravioli dishes were stand alone. Incredibly tasty. The presentation of every dish was exquisite and the drink pairings were perfect."

"Food was un-inspirational except the tuna sushi dish with blackberry sauce - which blew me away. Kale salad was interesting but way too oily, lamb was too fatty, and beet salad was bland. I was very disappointed as this was recommended by two other people. Perhaps they ate other better tasting menu items on their previous visits. I would not go back.."

"We visited during Dine Out and really enjoyed our meal and the room.
The one thing we'd recommend is asking to sit in the back part of the restaurant, away from the door if it's cold outside. There's no barrier between outdoors and in and so when the door opens and closes, diners at the front of the room get hit with blasts of cold air."

"We went for Dine Out Vancouver with a bunch of friends. The place is nice and cozy as we sat down by the fireplace. The Sunday beer special is definitely a huge plus! The service was great, and the food (even though it's dine out) was AMAZING! Everything was cooked to perfection. I absolutely loved my pull-pork ravioli. It's too bad that this is not offered in their regular menu. But I will definitely be going back!"
