Tavira
Duarte Rebolo was born in Madeira Island, Madeira, a popular European tourist spot in the Atlantic Ocean. His career in restaurant service began there and so far has spanned about 20 years. Tavira restaurant opened its doors in November of 1999. The name Tavira comes from a beautiful place in Portugal. Since opening Tavira has been included in Washingtonian Magazine's 100 Very Best Restaurants and rated very good to excellent by Zagat. Tavira has also been mentioned nationally in Gourmet Magazine, Bethesda Magazine and received favorable reviews from The Washington Post, Washington Times, The Gazette, Washington Diplomat and other local newspapers. Duarte's professionalism, attention to detail and hard work will make your dining experience a delightful virtual escape to Portugal.

"We went to Tavira for an adult family dinner. I noted in the OT Reservation that we needed a quiet table since several of us were hard of hearing. They put us at a very nice round table in the corner - we had no problem hearing each other. The waiter was wonderful and the food great. There were 6 of us and everyone enjoyed their meal. We will likely be back again."

"Having passed Tavira's building thousands of times, we thought we would give it a try after our son's graduation from UMD. And we are glad that we did! The kids had never eaten Portugese and it had been years since their parents did. Everyone enjoyed their meal, the service was wonderful, our waiter suggested a more appropriate wine to share. We will be going back!"

"As someone mentioned, once past the idea the main entrance is from a parking garage, everything was great. We felt welcome by the greeting from the maitre d. The dining room is reminiscent of sunny Portugal, set apart from the bar area. Although the noise carried over, it was not enough to make it disagreeable. The waiter was friendly and professional. We had a nice Portuguese white wine from a varied wine list. The food was excellent. We started with a roasted red pepper stuffed with crab. I ordered calf's liver (a nice thick cut) with onions, roasted zucchini, carrots and mashed potatoes. My companion had salmon (a very generous portion). We shared a delicious Grandma's fried milk dessert. The coffee was excellent. Will definitely return."

"The food here is pretty good, the service is excellent. My only issue is that the authenticity of the restaurant has suffered as they try to attract new customers. None of the staff speak portuguese. They all speak spanish. When I actually said the items on the menu in portuguese, they didn't understand what I was saying. There is no porco alentejana, porco leitao. A lot of the fish dishes are not authentic. They do serve bacalhau, however mahi mahi and corvina are not portuguese dishes. I am still giving the restaurant a good rating, just as a man of portuguese descent it bothers me a little that this is occuring. If you want a true portuguese menu, go to NJ! (Where I'm from)"

"I came here with a Capital Deal. I got a good value for two entrees and two glasses of wine for $40. Everything else was an add-on. The quality of the food was very good. The place in general is a little expensive so I probably wouldn't come back too often but worth the stop. I'm glad I came."

"I gave two stars for service only because dinner was served timely and hot, and my water glass was never empty. My complaint was with the waiter who may have also been the manager and/or owner. He was no where to be found after taking the order and having the check delivered (albeit without being reduced for the coupon previously shared.). After waiting what seemed 15 minutes and not being acknowledged by any other service person on the floor, I got up and walked to the bar to find him sitting at a table enjoying casual conversation with a couple. I interrupted him, had the check corrected and left immediately. I did not want to have him come to the table with a revised check and risk another long wait."

"I had not been to Tavira for several years and was happy to discover that it was just as wonderful as it was way back then. It is located (improbably, for such a lovely restaurant) in the basement of an office building and can be difficult to find, even when you find the office building itself, but it's worth the trouble. The food was excellent, the server personable and very helpful, and the ambiance lovely -- even in the basement of an office building. By all means, take the time to find Tavira and enjoy."

"we visited Tavira to celebrate a birthday. We were greeted and the specials were explained. The service from the waitstaff was exceptional-- they took time to explain the menus and give several recommendations--including a good accounting of the various wines we were considering. Conversation was easy even as the room filled up around 7:30 p.m.

"My husband and I had a wonderful dinner Saturday night at Tavira. We have been there several times and I can honestly say that this place never disappoints. I had the delicious corvina special which was brought to the table whole and the waiter kindly cleaned it for me. It was so full of flavor with capers, pimientos and spice...my husband ordered the veal marsala which was very tasty as well...we ended the meal with the pears in a port wine and cinnamon wirh ice cream...perfect way to end a most memorable meal...the service was outstanding and the food was delicious! we shall return as we have many times...."

"I've beem to Tavira quite a few times but never again on a Saturday night. Although the food and service were very good, the noise was deafening. "Ate here for Valentine's day price fix menu and enjoyed it tremendously. We have eaten at Tavira before and always enjoy the food. The menu is a bit small but everything is prepared impeccably. The wait staff is very helpful and attentive. The food is not your usual fare, the Portuguese influence makes for some very interesting and tasty European style meals. We have never had a bad meal at Tavira and have have been going here over the past several years."

"If you want an escape into the Old World, Travira is definitely the restaurant to visit. Chef Duarte prepares a delicious bacalhao a bras with garlic, Portuguese olive oil, cod, olives, potatoes, eggs and herbs which was outstanding. Service staff was also very professional and even maintaining some of that Old World charm and transporting us to Portugal. Highly recommended establishment. "Loved it! From the moment my husband and I walked in, we were received with a warm and friendly greet. Our reservation was for 8:45pm, on Valentine's Day and we arrived around 8:20pm with the idea to have some martinis at the bar; but instead, we were offered champagne while they prepared our table. The whole experience was excellent and we will be back for sure!
The only thing I reccommend is for the restaurant to have some black napkins (for the people dressed in black) :-)

"We celebrated my father-in-law's birthday at Tavira because it's one of his favorite restaurants. It was my first time there and I was really impressed with the atmosphere and decor immediately. I definitely didn't feel like I was sitting in a basement. The food was fantastic; we tried a sausage special that they had for an appetizer and it was like eating dessert! Delicious. Everything was cooked to perfection; there wasn't a single dish that didn't come up to par with all of the others. I'll definitely be going back and bringing others with me!"

"Great place!!! The restaurant is unexpectedly nestled at the bottom of an office building in Chevy Chase. The ambiance is fabulous! The service was excellent! The food was delicious! My husband and I chose Shank of Lamb with Risotto (one of the daily specials). The meat was fall off the bone tender and the portions were substantial."

"Ambiance is nice. Feels like you are in a european cafe, albeit underground, with the murals and tiles. Service is excellent. Food is good. Even though tried the restaurant on restaurant week, couldn't resist trying the goat stew special. And, what do you know! Although it didn't taste like chicken, it had the texture of chicken! Also, enjoyed a glass of the house wine, identified only as a Portugese cabernet. Would go again."
