Tierra Sur at Herzog Wine Cellars
Tierra Sur Restaurant, inside Herzog Wine Cellars new state-of-the-art winery, is Chef Todd Aarons’ second incarnation of Mediterranean influenced seasonal cuisine, this time utilizing California’s local produce. Chef Aarons is a veteran of Zuni Café in San Francisco and Savoy in Manhattan, and is now returning home to California to make Tierra Sur his new abode.
With Tierra Sur, Todd’s cooking is once again rustic, unpretentious and ingredient driven. Menu items such as pomegranate-marinated lamb, aged rib-eye steak and wild king salmon are cooked outdoors over an open flame. The menu also includes house-made organic corn tortillas with exotic fillings such as birria (chili-braised lamb) with salsa cruda and grilled achiote-marinated red snapper with tomatillo salsa. A high point of the menu is the prix fixe wine tasters meal with wine pairings for each course.

"Wife and I love this as our special place for meals. Went for her birthday. Since it's kosher and closed weekends, we don't get to go as often as we would like. Abundant, decadent meals. Flavors are strong but not overpowering, and usually quite unique."

"Tierra Sur is probably the best kosher restaurant in the world, providing consistently amazing dining experience. All the items on the menu are interesting and innovative, presentation is beautiful and service is outstanding. It is located in Herzog Winery, so wine list is fantastic as well. "WOW! The food i had here was completely out of this world. Coming from NY, I have a lot of choices of fine dining but this was far better than anything else. The Bison Burger topped with Lamb Bacon was truly exquisite. Thanks a lot."

"Friend told me that dinner at Terra Sur was amazing. But our lunch experience was just OK. In the online reservation I noted I was gluten sensitive. Nobody got that message. "Dear caught in headlights" was the reaction of server when I ask for something besides the bread to dip the the garlic olive oil. When prompted a,, nice array of veggies were provided. Salmon was $30 for lunch so I ordered the chicken salad for $15 Very fresh ingredients but just an OK salad. Service was slow and lacked personality and caring.
There is a nice gift shop reasonably priced and wine tasting too."

"Some of the starters were very unusual tasting (olive tapenade--would not order again) and some were excellent. I recommend the chile relleno! We split the mahi mahi tostada. It was served beautifully on a crisp blue corn flour tortilla, and it was excellent.
The service was wonderful as was the ambiance. We enjoyed 2/3rds of the food. We would go again and try other dishes."

"With the most expensive menu in the county, this place comes with a lot of expectations. Fortunately, they deliver. Portions are large, so don't be afraid to share. Always order the soup - the soup is wonderful. Another tip: appetizers can be entrees and vice versa. Saw quite a few 32 oz bone-in rib eye for 2 landing on tables. At $85, we shied away from it, but may need to reconsider on our next visit because it looked delicious and people really seemed to enjoy it."

"I knew it was pricey going in, but $58 for lamb wellington, everything on menu ala carte, and you could not buy a bottle of wine while wine tasting to take into the restaurant ---I'll not return. Although lighting and dining room cozy, temperature cold, changed chairs two times to get out of draft. 2 seafood entrees, no apps or salads, one glass wine/one scotch, cold bread, no dessert --$100."

"My wife and I very much enjoyed our dinners at Tierra Sur. We both ordered the wine tasting menu and wild salmon; both the food and the wines were excellent, and the service was very good. It was a quiet Monday evening, with only about six tables occupied; however, the ambiance was degraded considerably by a small construction project going on in one corner of the dining room. One would think that such a pricey restaurant could schedule such projects for hours when the restaurant is closed. Also, the menu is very limited, so if you are not a flexible diner, you might want to call ahead to inquire about the available choices."

"There were far too many substitutions and missing items from the menu. Most notably Herzog Syrah wine, produced and shipped on the premises was missing. At a minimum the multiple changes should have been photocopied and handed to the diner, thus not requiring so much repetitions and memorizations. When we take the time and trouble to travel over an hour, it was disappointing to be met with an angry stare as though we were intruders, "why are you here?'' He took our reservation without a word of welcome, better training is in order. The food was good, especially the duck pate appetizer.Our table service was diligent and added to the overall experience."

"Overall our experience at Tierra Sur was excellent. There were however things regarding our menu choices that I would have liked to be different.
Our order was for steak and lamb wellington. The wellington came in a puff pastry dough that was soggy as it sat in gravy, puff pastry should be dry and flaky not soggy. The steak we got was excellent, but the vinegar sauce used was not apprecitated.
If these are the flavors and textures that you re trying to acheive, then you succeeded and we look forward to tasting your other entrees.
Our appetizers were excellent as were the drinks and desserts. We look forward to coming back again!"

Even the bread was great and it is all paired with Herzog wines which went beautifully with the meal. "The menu at lunch wasn't that special but we thought at least the execution might be better. My house salad wasn't fresh and my husband thought the soup tasted canned. His sandwich was, in his words, "glopped" with a gooey but undistinguished dressing. Yhe server got my meal wrong and I had to wait at least twenty more minutes for them to crank out the house hamburger! They obviously felt no need to correct their mistake promptly. The desserts were OK. To top it off, it was overpriced particularly for what they offered. We were given a gift certificate for this restaurant which is why we drove out from LA. Wouldn't bother to make the trip again."

"My partner loved the food (she's a foodie). For me, it was a little too "California-cuisine", meaning I went home hungry and it was amazingly expensive. Of course it's up to them what religious restrictions they wish to apply, but I have no interest in being kosher (or any other superstition) and I want cream in my coffee, especially when I'm paying as much as I paid at a Mario Batalla restaurant in NYC. That said, the food and service were excellent."

"This was our first visit - it was a wonderful experience - from the food to service. the serving staff knows their wines and can make excellent suggestions. Then there is the wine tasting area and gift shop just outside of the restaurant - although we did not partake of the wine tasting I could see other patrons enjoying themselves.
This is a definite To Do! Our family will certainly visit again - soon!"

"Hi, I am an educator, and so I particularly noted what a wasted opportunity there was to educate people about kosher food. Was I incorrect in assuming that anyone could go to the restaurant, whether they observed kosher practices or not? In the restaurant, which is finely appointed and a pleasant place to dine, I put a chocolate Valentine heart on the dining table to celebrate the upcoming Valentine's Day. The waitress came over and told us to please take the chocolate off the table and stated that 'this is a kosher restaurant." Many at the table had no idea why the chocolate was off limits. Why not take a few minutes and explain to us, in a friendly way, what the custom is and why the request was made?"

"This was the first time we had gone to Tierra Sur and we would go again. The food was fabulous, loved the ambiance and the service was very personal. As we had gone for my husband's birthday, they put a candle in his dessert and wished him a happy birthday. The manager also gave us a discount in honor of his birthdsy, which was a nice surprise to us.
Beautiful to find such a nice kosher restaurant."
