"The food was fine for being gluten free and so would return if my guests had that requirement. I found the food way too expensive. I was very grateful that we could share the fix price meal because the whole menu would have been too much to eat. The individual prices were so high we were forced to chose the fix price. Taking home left overs just is not feasible so glad the servings were so small. The soup, salad and dessert were very tasty, but the "stew" was boring and expensive."

"Vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike will LOVE this restaurant. The food is imaginitive and filled with vibrant flavors. Great combinations of salt, sweet, crunch, etc. in every bite. This is one of the first places I've eaten at where I didn't walk away feeling like I ate loads of grease/stuffed. This is a must try. I will be going back again and again."

My only complaint is how hard it is to get a reservation sometimes! But that is good, it's a great spot! Thank you Natural Selection for providing yet another wonderful dinner experience. "I have been a vegetarian for 28 years so I was looking forward to the meal. First problem was that the dishes had very little protein. From the menu's description, it appeared that the vegan options had none. The lack of protein for vegetarian plates at most restaurants is why we sought a vegetarian place. We can't be sure because our server seemed ignorant of every menu detail we inquired about and was rude about our questions. She was also rude when we asked for bread and declined our request, a shame because the portions were so small that they were not filling. Our salad had brown, wilted endive on it. Soup,was good but nothing else. We left hungry and had to go to another restaurant for a meal."

"We are vegans and are always looking for restaurants that have really good vegan food. you would think that Portland wmould have a lot of great vegan restanurants but we've found very few in that category. However,Natural Selections knows how to do vegan food right! There were no meat substitutes (ie. big blocks of tofu or portobello mushroom on a bun standing in for a burger). The chef (s) created unique, tasty dishes using fresh vegetables and fruit almost exclusively. They also made accommodations for my husband's gluten sensitivity. The celery soup was particularly creamy and delicious. NS is a bit on the pricey side but worth it, especially for a special occasion. We will definitely be back to see whatt they do with summeveggies."

"I always have mixed feelings about Natural Selection. I love its focus on seasonal vegetarian food, and the salads are always wonderful. But the food has a common, distracting flavor. It's almost as if every dish has to include a certain tangy taste that is not necessary. Soups, for example, often include vinegar or lemon that detracts from the taste of the featured vegetable. The same is true of main dishes, where a lovely gratin gets overpowered by a tangy chutney. This dynamic might work occasionally, but it happens too often. I also really wish the chef would branch out and consider using spices and herbs. Finally, the seating is uncomfortable, and crowded tables make it difficult to not hear other conversations."

"My boyfriend and I went to Natural Selection on a Friday night. We chose the $40 fixed price and each tried 4 different dishes so we were able to taste everything on the menu. I also did the wine pairing. The aperitif prior to the meal was amazing and I wanted to drink more of it! So yummy! I enjoyed each and every dish that night. This was my first experience eating at a vegetarian restaurant. I thought that I might come away feeling unsatisfied or still hungry but in the end felt completely satisfied and really full! Every bite was interesting and flavorful. It was fun trying to figure out what vegetables and fruits were in each dish. We have been to many restaurants in Portland and this is our favorite."

"Our favorite romantic dinner spot. I love to see vegetarian/vegan done with as much artistry as meat dishes. The food looks beautiful and the tastes are complex and delicious. The cocktails are as well done as the food, and the service is friendly, efficient and unobtrusive."

"It was my boyfriend and I's first anniversary. He is a vegetarian and I wanted to be sure he would feel like he had more options than just one or two things on the menu. I did not expect to enjoy myself as much as I did though. The flavors were wonderful, the food was well balanced, and I never wanted for a piece of meat once. We will be back"

"This was my second time and it was just as wonderful as the first. You are delivered art on a plate and leave feeling very satisfied! Its a bonus that they make vegan or vegetarian food exciting and so tasty that meat eaters could also leave happy."

"The food was amazing, each dish a work of art. They accommodated for food sensitivities without making us feel bad, and we left full and happy. We had a vegan a vegetarian and two carnivores at the table and everyone was super happy. The atmosphere was lovely, the whole experience was worth every penny and we can't wait to have an excuse to go again."

"Natural Selection was fantastic! I'm a vegetarian so there are generally fewer options for me at higher end restaurants. Of course, Natural Selection has a completely vegetarian menu so that was not an issue. Between the three of us in our party we ordered each of the 8 items in four courses. Everything was delicious, beautifully presented, and served in appropriate portions. We had an excellent experience!"

"This is a perfect special occasion restaurant for my wife and me because it's as good as any foodie spot in Portland, but it doesn't serve any meat. She's vegetarian, and we both love trying new dishes. Natural Selection delivers on both fronts. They can't just add bacon or pork belly to everything, so they find interesting ways to prepare interesting ingredients. We also loved the wine pairings - they fit perfectly with each course."

"I was pretty excited to finally go to Natural Selections and it was nice. However both my partner and I found ourselves still hungry after the meal was over. I heard this complaint from others and didn’t' believe it but it turns out to be true. The food was good, not great, but good, but for this price I expect to walk away stuffed. We joked about getting a couple of slices of pizza afterwards to fill ourselves up.

The next morning I went to Vita Cafe for breakfast (their sister restaurant) had the sloppy biscuit for less than ten bucks and was stuffed for the whole day. I spent $115 at Natural Selections and went to bed hungry."

"Natural Selection is a vegetable-focused restaurant with dishes that highlight the produce so well that you'll never miss the meat. It is truly fine dining. As a vegetarian with some food allergies (soy) that make it hard to eat at most vegetarian restaurants, I especially appreciated their desire to focus on the vegetables rather than just slapping a slab of tofu on the plate, as so many other restaurants do. I wish I lived in Portland - I'd be here every week!"
