At UBU, we're taking Asian to the next level. Traditional favorites such as Sushi Rolls share the dining room limelight with flavor-infused creations such as Wasabi Steak and Sake Steamed Mussels. We call it Asian Avant-Garde, and while the flavors and textures are decidedly Japanese, Executive Chef Tomo Mitsuno allows a little Western influence to inspire his kitchen artistry. We are recently chosen for "top new eats from 2011" by John Gilchrist. He mentioned "Chef Tomo is the best sushi chef in Calgary, hands down" "best asian restaurant" Please come try and see if we are as good as our reviews. Also, we are constantly getting new sakes in to pair up nicely with chef Tomo's food. Please, come in and ask for Andrew, I'll make sure its an unforgettable evening.

"There were great choices for differant types of sushi rolls; but I wouldn't truly call it a sushi restaurant, there were many items that were not typical sushi items but were more of japanese infusion; it would be a great place to go an try some very differant items that you could not find anywhere else.
There was not much of an atomosphere as it was not busy at all."

"Service was great. Food was average but well priced. We were the only table- odd for a Saturday night-I think as this is a downtown spot it is probably popular at lunch. Might try it someday for lunch."

"The food was meh. I came for DT dining week and was blown away by the flavours. Tonight nothing. The scallops were cooked til tough. The various rolls we shared were nothing special. Service was very good"

"I picked this restaurant specifically because it was listed as a participant in the Big Taste Restaurant Week. The Open Table reservation confirmation for UBU said "... to take advantage of the Big Taste Restaurant Week fixed-price offering, be sure to request the special menu when you arrive". Upon arrival I was told that I would have had to request this at the time of reservation because the kitchen was unable to accomodate these special requests without advance warning. I was disappointed - my advice to the restaurant is don't claim to be part of a promotion like Big Taste Restaurant Week if you can't accomodate your customers."

"The skewered scallops were cold and the chef only gave me a 20% discount which did not do much to the overall price. I overpaid for my meal and left disappointed. Will not be returning here for sushi here again!"

"I chose this place mainly because all other restaurants were reserved at the time. Service, food, atmosphere was awesome. Also I ordered one dish which they have splitted in half for me and my girlfriend. That was very suprising and I really appreciated the thought behind it as well. In all, that was the first time I gave out 30% tip. I think that kind of explains it all."

"Was disappointed to find that they only have two items on special on their 'half off' Thursdays. Regardless, one of the items was delicious and we ordered a bunch of those (crunchy salmon and yam roll?) as well as some other stuff. Initially, the place was empty, but as it got closer to what must have been showtime, a bunch of people showed up. The ambiance was good, but the staff could have been more attentive. Overall: 3/5 stars."

"is a great location in the theatre. Server was lovely but did not really explain the special ticket features to us very well. Did not undertand until we got the bill. Special appetizers were nice, entre lacked appeal and taste. Sorry, not very notable. Probably would not think to come back"

"The server was friendly, knowledgable and able to suggest items off the menu that was a hit with my group. She seated us right away and was also able to let us know which dishes suited our group of 6 and which might require a second order.
The food was delicious, presented very creatively, and lots of interesting flavors.
The area and ambiance was very nice for a team lunch. It was quiet but lots of conversation happening at different tables."

"Food was good,service was attentive and timely, servers were casual and friendly but competent and not intrusive. I had tempura shrimp and yam fries - both well done, and my guest enjoyed her sushi rolls. We love the ambience, and it was good to see it busy. There were a number of tables filled even though it was a snowy cold day, and we were seated at a table in the middle of the room by the bar. However, we could still comfortably converse and enjoy our lunch."
