Haute cuisine and high spirits. Steaks and chops, fish and oysters, champagne and lobster. And proper cocktails, served with style each evening by chef/partner Robert Carter and staff. The atmosphere is sophisticated and clubby, not formal, Walls are covered in rich velvet with antique Cyprus woodwork, 19th-century oil paintings and contemporary renderings of local plantation life. Beyond the room are views of the lush Garden Courtyard and reflecting pool. Experience the acclaimed fare of four-star Peninsula Grill. For all guests business casual is the appropriate attire. "We found the food to be ambitious; that is to say daring to be diffeent. Sometimes it works well; sometimes it does not. The quality of the food is supeior as is the wine list. But the food varies. The filet was wondeful but the steak au poivre was presented poorly on the plate. The meat was sliced and surounded with potatoes and green beans. It looked messy and unappetizing. In general, much of the food is very salty as well.
This is a special occasion place and the staff delivers. The service is attentive and very friendly. Helpful with wine choices and food selections. We just feel that this is a pricey restaurant and could be more consistent."

"A wonderful dinner and our waiter, Jonathan, was outstanding. The only downside was the first two inferior tables that we were taken to and at the time the room was less than half full. After deciding on a table in the middle of the restaurant everything went smoothly."

"Absolutely fantastic. I believe this was the best restaurant to which I have ever been. While expensive, it turned out to be well worth the cost. My family and I were just talking about the experience again last night and could not find a single thing wrong with our visit to this restaurant."

"This was one of the most memorable meals I have ever eaten. The food was amazing and we were treated incredibly well. I had told the restaurant that we were celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary and they did everything they could to make sure that we celebrated right. We didn't order apps but we still received a sample of one of their apps. And our desserts came out with "Happy 20th Anniversary" written on the bottom of our plate.
Our waitress was completely sweet and adorable. Everytime she asked us what we thought of our food she would be thrilled when we told her "great". It was like she was giving us a present and was thankful that we liked it. We could not have asked for more for this special occasion!!"

"We came for the coconut cake after seeing the Food Network show. We were served a delicious meal and the cake was amazing but it was so noisy inside this restaurant we could not hear our servers or each other. Chef came out frequently but clung to the outer wall guests only as even he would not venture into the middle of the room where he knew he could not be heard if he spoke."

"The best thing about our meal was our wonderful waiter with his charming French accent. The food was very good, but maybe a bit pricey for what we got. Had we skipped the dessert, which we shared, and the two cappucinos, we would have saved $20, bringing the meal to $80 per person. There are restaurants in Atlanta where the food and ambiance are as good, and the prices lower. Did I say we loved our waiter!"

"While the service was good, everyone in my party agreed that the food was too rich tasting. We were overwhelmed by the flavors in the dishes and the presentation was awkward. My meat was on top of my vegetables leaving me to dig through the plate. That said, portions were large and the food did arrive cooked as ordered. Our dessert was fantastic but we were happy that we shared as again the portion was large. The restaurant is crowded even on a week night. Be prepared to listen to the conversations of others."

"Absolutely fantastic dining experience. Our table was ready within at least 10 minutes of our reservation time. We had enough time to grab a cocktail at the bar while we waited. The food was beyond incredible. My husband started with the veal sweetbreads and now 2 days later he is STILL talking about them. I started with the oyster sampler trio. The oysters were cooked to perfection. I could have eaten at least 2 more portions of the oysters. Phenomenal. My husband had the duck for an entree and I chose the NY strip with blue-balsamic glaze. My steak was cooked to perfection. My husband thoroughly enjoyed his duck as well. We will be dining here again and again."

"We had antoher wonderful experience at Peninsula Grill. This is our favorite spot for a special occasion, romantic dinner. My husband judges all restaurants by the quality of their rack of lamb, and he says theirs is his absolute favorite. I love the peach glazed grilled shrimp with the corn risotto and the horseradish hush puppies! Our waiter Jonathan is very personable and efficient; we love talking with him. All in all it was our favorite dining experience in Charleston. We highly recommend it!"

"OMG! This was one of the best dining experiences my husband and I have ever had! The food was amazing, and the service was outstanding. Such attention to detail!! We had a wonderful time. My only complaint was that they squeezed too many tables into the dining area, and made it difficult for staff and patrons to maneuver. But definitely a do-over! "The staff knew us by name and why we were there. They were incredibly personable. I was a little intimidated at first, but the staff put us to ease immediately and made us feel incredibly welcomed. “Fantastic” still seems an understatement in terms of the flavors. Everything was prepared exquisitely. We had for dessert the Coconut Cake (which the Peninsula Grill is known for) and while this seemed like an intimidating amount of cake, it was just the right amount of everything, coconut included. By the way, one slice was more than enough for my gentleman and I to share. There are some restaurants in Charleston that would do well observing the Peninsula Grill for tips on class, as it is obvious that they have set the bar."

Without a reservation, you may still be accommodated, but could get seated in the bar area in some spillover tables - which I think will change your experience. "We celebrated early Valentine's Day. Once again the food and service was impecible. My wife ordered the Gulf grilled shrimp with a peach glaze over a bed of rice. Fingerling potatoes were her side order. For me, I choose the lightly fried Mountain Trout over red rice and baby carrots. Both dishes were above and beyond in taste. "This was the very best dining experience we have had many years. Our waiter Jonathan was
superb. We knew we were in for a wonderful night when we were told we could linger over our cocktails and dinner as long as we liked. My husband said the lamb was the best he had ever had. I requested a substitution of spinach for asparagus and was accomodated without hesitation. My shrimp in peach sauce with risotto and corn was outstanding. On the recommendation of a couple next to us who tried both, we opted for a white Russian
souffle over the renowned coconut cake. The souffle was fabulous. We were thrilled with our dinner. Bravo!"

"We wanted to like the Peninsula because we like the Planters Inn. The Peninsula prices were high but the food quality was less than average. Our dinner began nicely with a dainty offering from the chef. Our salads were very nice. But the grouper was overcooked,too salty and the tiny portion ($30)looked foolish on the large, otherwise bare plate. I'd ordered side of spinach which was both too garlicky (I love garlic) and again, too salty. Because it cost 6.50, I ate the darned thing. Another of our party ordered the prime rib eye and was bothered by the heavy salting although it seemed to be cooked to the degree he ordered. A third of our party ordered a special of "wreck fish", described as like red snapper but wastough and salty."

"We were a bit disappointed in the food.The fish dinners, three of the meals were fish, were all dry, overcooked. With all the hype we had heard, we had expected the best meal of our lives. It wasn't.
Positive was the coconut cake which did meet expectations. One slice was plenty for the 5 of us; very tasty and not as sweet as we had feared it would be.
Service was quite good and friendly, a positive experience.
Our wine 'expert' thought the wine list also very good.

"The food was great but their single, moderately sized dining room was noisy. Not the place for an intimate dinner. Table service was extremely well orchestrated. Waiters are very knowledgeable and helpful in identifying signature/exceptional dishes. No bargains on the wine list. The restaurant does not enforce their dress code so there's a mix of patrons dressed for dinner and hotel guests who do not. They were fully booked on Xmas day and did not have our table ready when we arrived (on time). I would not go back on a busy night but this is the place for a special occasion meal in Charleston."

"This was a fisrt clas dining experience from top to bottom. Even the children seemed know it was quiet time when they entered the restaurant. The food was different preparations of standard local foods items such as fish, lamb and vegetables. My wife and i both had rack of lamb and it was supurb! done as ordered (medium rare to rare) to the service which was very attentive yet not intrusive.

We will return to this dining gem and that is saying a lot considering the fierce competition in the downtown retaurant area. The experience was well worth the cost."

"Our server Chris Osteen was extremely engaging and professional. He addressed us by name and congratulated us on our anniversary (which we had put on the reservation). The hostess seating us was also very warm and engaging even though the people at our table before us were taking their time. We happily waited at the bar for a few minutes until our table was ready. The food was spectacular from start to finish and we left pleasantly full. Each course had it's own little flavor explosions and was by far the best meal we have had in years. We highly recommend this restaurant and plan to go back again soon."

"This has been our favorite Charleston restaurant thus far! We love the rich velvet covered walls and old world charm. Our server, Heather, was knowledgeable and guided us through our selections with confidence and flair. The bread is the best we've ever had! The ribeye was "to die for" and the fish special was perfect. We took advantage of the cork fee ($40) so we could enjoy one of our own wines, and were surprised with a nice memento: They steamed off the wine bottle label, laminated it, and returned to us! What a nice touch. We hear that the coconut cake is excellent, but we opted for the 18 year McCallan instead. This is one restaurant we will definitely enjoy again!"

The 3-way lobster appetizer is wonderful. The trio of soups is different. The salads were good. The lobster is great. The steaks and selections of sauces are also great. The presentation compliments the impeccable service. The coconut cake and sorbets are perfect to share for dessert. I would recommended dressing up to enjoy your experience. "I am a restauranteur in Naples Florida. Every time I dine at Peninsula Grill I am reminded of the true benchmark for a great restaurant. My server Billy was articulate, food knowledgeable and totally customer oriented. Dennis Perry, the sommelier, has created a wine list that rivals some of the best. I told him the style of wine I was looking for and he selected a Meursault that was exactly what I wanted. Robert Carter, Executive Chef, was sensitive to my food allergies and created a dinner especially for me that was wonderful despite the limitations my allergies imposed on him. I return to Naples with greater aspirations for my restaurants because of Peninsula Grill's consistently stunning performance."

This was the best meal considering food and service in Charleston (although we believe Cru Cafe as a better value at a slightly lower price point--also reviewed). All ingredients are fresh, exceptionally well prepared, & seamlessly served w/a visit by Chef Carter. We were not disappointed with any of our choices, but the duck stands out as the VERY best. I savored every bite of it will get again on our return. Neither of us are fans of coconut cake but that is their signature dessert. Banana pudding was very good, but very rich, so you may want to share to avoid overeating.Peninsula Grill should be a stop if you come to Charleston to eat!"

"We chose Peninsula Grill to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. We were not disappointed. We dined at a romantic window table, and noted that patio dining would have been nice as well. We chose the trio of soups for our appetizer-all were delightful. My husband had the trout which was cooked to perfection, as were my diver scallops. The sides were good, but the "fries" that accompanied the trout were almost too firey. The collards that were served w/ my scallops were a bit sandy. All said, however, the entrees were very, very good. For dessert, we chose the signature coconut cake and it was a delight-everything it was advertised to be. The entire experience was greatly enhanced by Mark, our knowledgable and enthusiastic server."

"We had Thanksgiving dinner for two at the Peninsula Grill. The service was outstanding. In particular, we had a request for a special table that they very happily accommodated despite the fact they were very busy. The entire wait staff was attentive throughout the meal.

I had heard such good things about this restaurant, i was a little disappointed that the food didn't really knock my socks off. It was very good but not great. We both had the special turkey dinner with a oyster dressing, which came with a gumbo, a salad, and desert. Each of these were solid but nothing really stood out as a wow.

The ambiance is somewhat noisy and crowded. I found myself distracted by goings on at other tables."

"Of all the six or so restaurants we frequented on our last Charleston trip, this was without doubt the most outstanding food. Really, really good eats, a cut above most restaurants in Charleston. Every dish served at our table of four was worthy of comment, so I am not going to try to single anything out. Great wine list, even if pricey. Atmosphere also quite lovely as well. "wonderful service in an elegant atmosphere; we were a bit surprised at the comparatively high noise level but the tables were far enough away from each other that we could still have an "intimate" dinner; As a vegetarian I had planned to order just a salad and perhaps a side veggie but the waiter told me they had a vegetarian plate although it wasn';t on the menu; wonderful fresh vegetables prepared to perfection; my husbands fish dish (he's definitely a carnivour) was perfect as well. Not a thing to complain about!"

"A friend and I had a wonderful experience at Peninsula Grill. The ambiance was elegant and dignified without being stuffy. We felt very welcomed; we were there on a Wednesday and were told when we were seated that the table was ours for the evening. The subsequent service was impeccable--solicitous without being intrusive. The chef stopped by every table, and our server was extremely attentive.

The meal was delicious and inventive. We have eaten in a number of very fine restaurants in places like Boston, New York, and Paris, and our two starters--the oyster stew and the sweetbreads--measured up to anything we have had."
