"I've been to Zapoteca twice now-- once on a date with my fiance and once with our mothers for Mother's Day. On both occasions, we were very pleased with the food and the service. The menu is exciting and high-class without being the least bit inaccessible, and the house cocktails are a must for every visit.
The pricing is generally on the high side, but placed reasonably among other fine Portland restaurants. We don't flinch at the price since we know we're getting a fantastic value and a great experience.
The only con to the place is the noise level. It's not a large restaurant but with high ceilings and just the way the room's broken up, it doesn't take too many parties to raise the din to a distracting place. Still, we'll be back!"

"My husband loves the ceviche trio. I have had a variety of items but prefer the enchiladas de puerco. I recently had the taquitos de pollo and the jalapenos rellenos de queso (both appetizers). The taquitos were good, with moist and flavorful chicken. The jalapenos, unfortunately, were watery and tasteless. We did not finish the 3rd jalapeno since it really wasn't that good. I also am disappointed that a restaurant that serves such unique salsas relies upon bland, and what seem to be, bagged tortilla chips. I prefer the more fresh-tasting chips of a local chain restaurant whose chips really can't be beat. Guacamole is good but avocado chunks were difficult to get on the chip.
Try the prickly pear margarita. Incredible!"

"Great dining experience. Knowledgeable, friendly staff. We were not rushed, even though we were campers. The trio of ceviche was great. Both enchiladas, pork and seafood, were very good."

"I was more than pleased with the food at Zapoteca. Although it's a bit pricy for mexican food, ($8 for guacamole) it was absolutely fantastic. I don't know what they cook the black beans in, but usually I don't waste the time to eat them, but here they were well seasoned and complimented the chicken enchiladas nicely.
Great date spot, though it was a little hard to hear each other. Otherwise great ambiance, excellent food, great drinks!"

"Comfortable dining room, accommodating service and interesting menu. Four women who had not seen each other for several months met for dinner. We received great service. Our server had to return repeatedly because we were so intent on catching up we didn't focus on the menu. She returned good naturedly and told us to take our time. We each ordered traditional margaritas that were excellent. All of us selected enchiladas, but different fillings and toppings. We were all pleased with our dinners. My crab and shrimp enchilada was tasty and filling. I would definitely return."

"I had asked for a table that was somewhat romantic, and away fromt the entrance. We were seated in the bar area at a high top, bar was loud and busy.
We have been to this restuarant a couple of times for lunch, not for dinner, we had a nice meal, but would probably choose another restaurant in town in the future."

"The atmosphere, location, beer and wine list, and food are all great. We went on a Friday night, however, and the main dining room had an large energetic group of college-age folks. Needless to say, it was very hard to have a conversation."

"food is very good. the appetizer choices are varied; we had the mussels and the lobster ceviche, both were excellent. Margarita choices abound, but the classic margarita has a great fresh lime taste- mixed to order, not sweet or premixed. Zapoteca has a great take on Mexican food- not at all tex-mex. the only note of caution would be the noise level - high ceilings, open areas, tend toward a very loud atmosphere."

"The dining room was a little loud, but then they do serve a lot of tequila. The food seemed kind of hit or miss, our fried avocado salad was amazing, the tres sopes were salty and bland and just not very good. The service was spot on, and I will definitely visit again- now that I know what to order. My only real complaint was the lack of a grapefruit drink on the menu, I love grapefruit with tequila."

"Went for the first time with a party of four from work upon the recommendation of others. All of us thought our food was excessively salty. I couldn't finish mine. The quality of the food and the presentation was great and otherwise seasoned well. Too bad the salt was over done. Very surprised because of the recommendations from others. The service was excellent. Not sure if I'd go back or recommend."

"The last time I was here I ordered the calamari and shrimp ceviche and thought it was one of the best I'd ever tried. This time around I decided to upgrade and try the lobster version. I wa s disappointed. The lobster didn't seem to hold up to the ceviche process very well although the marinade was very tasty. The main course was a pepper sauce based seafood stew with shrimp, mussels and halibut ... Sort of a thick Mexican bouillabaisse ... Absolutely delicious!"

"There are several reasons for this poor review. 1. We ordered the tres salsas: the pico one was too salty to eat, it tasted like tomato and onion soaked in salt water. One of the other salsas had a piece of pork sitting in the middle of it. 2. The soup we ordered was too salty to enjoy - salt was the only flavor you could taste. (We have had this soup before and it was very good, which is why we ordered this time. Never again.) 3. The booth we were seated at was much too small. We had to squeeze in and it was uncomfortable the whole time. When we mentioned this to the waitress she said that she knew it was small and people mention it alot.
We will not be headed back any time soon, if ever."

"Not a Tex-Mex menu. Drinks and meal were both flavorful. Portions were reasonable and food was well seasoned. Nothing was premade all of the food tasted fresh.Valet parking was free but a tip is highly recommended as this is how they earn an income. I only wish the drinks had been less expensive."

"You know, I really liked the food here and the drinks were great, but the service was confused and slow. We were a little early for our reservation and opted to wait at the bar instead of taking a seat in the loud lounge. When we checked back in with the staff after about 15 minutes they made us feel like they had lost our table and it was our fault for sitting at the bar. So that was strange. Then we waited at least 45 minutes between our apps and dinner which was far too long! Despite apologizing that it was due to the large b-day party table next to us, we were treated like the table of 2 we were - not as large a tab as the table of 8. Well, instead of next time bringing our potential table of 8 here, I guess we'll find some other place."

"Reviews a year ago were fantastic, so we were really looking forward to dining there. The meal was underwhelming. Not sure if the reviews were Maine media hype or if the quality of the food has changed in the past year. Or, it could be that they had to change the menu to suit the demographics. Being a native Mainer, I can tell you that so often black pepper is considered an exotic spice. New and unusual food is not well accepted by the Mainers."

"We love Mexican food and the menu was interesting but ultimately disappointing. Valet parking benefit was compromised when server failed to communicate with valet resulting in an additional 10 minute wait. Menu item descriptions provided by waitstaff need to be more descriptive than "... al Zapoteca". I'm sure that some menu items are great, but our experience was like that of friends. Too many "almost there" items at a "too high" price."

"The drinks, food and service were excellent. I loved my Margarita. I think it was the second one on the list (the authentic one?). Flavor of the seafood enchillada was very good but subtle. No loud music. You can have a conversation easily with friends. The decor and mood were simple but classy and it fits the price. My only peeve with the restaurant is that the booths were a little deep (or the table was too high), and the lighting was a bit low (I couldn't read my menu very well)."

"This was my second meal at Zapoteca, the first was during restaurant week. In both cases I could not comfortably carry on a conversation with my dinner partners. The food was delicious, well-prepared and presented. The servers were attentive--a young woman during restaurant week who was very pleasant and energetic, a man this past week. My guest and I would have preferred not being called "ladies" by the male server. There's no need to call us anything. A family with 3 noisy children left shortly after we arrived. That helped, but not for long, as the music was too loud, and the acoustics really need attending to. Energy and liveliness is one thing, uncomfortable noise level that interferes with communication is another."

"The margaritas are out of this world. The menu selections all sound delicious. The presentation of some of the dishes was creative and artistic. Our dining companions raved about their food. Unfortunately ours was a bit disappointing. I might have misconceptions about Mexican food, but I do expect enchiladas to be drenched in sauce...be it red, green or mole brown. I'm not a fan of dry enchiladas and ours were. The favors were very, very good and would have been even better if there had been more of the sauce to taste. Our refrained black beans were cold.
The staff..friendly and efficient. I don't think this is the kind of restaurant that encourages leisurely dining. I will go back for the margaritas, but probably not for the food."

"My bf and I went here for dinner and drinks last Friday. We came up from Boston to spend the night...I read good reviews online so we booked a 7:30 reservation. We picked 4 margaritas off the cocktail list, with high expectations, but they were all overkilled with lime juice, taking away from the taste of the drink. The ceviche trio tasted fishy and was strangely soupy, we barely touched it and the waiter made no note of it. The guacamole was also very salty. We ordered Chicken Enchiladas to split for an entree. It took over 45 mins and we tried to cancel bc we were running late to a show but soon after I requested to cancel, the waiter of shows up with it and says nothing. Unfortunately we were pretty disappointed overall."

"My daughter and I frequently travel together and are real foodies. We do our research and make reservations in advance. We are treated beautifully 99% of the time, without "Party of two women, low revenue table" attitude. As much as we enjoyed the food at Zapoteca, we unfortunately were not welcomed as we would have liked. We had a 6:30 reservation, and upon arrival were seated at one of two small, high bar tables in the bar. When I asked if we could be seated in the dining room, was told it would be 30 minute wait. We said we would wait and ordered a drink at the bar. Fifteen minutes later, we were shown a table in the dining room. Service was pleasant enough, but not particularly engaging. A bit too much attitude at front door."

"The sopas appetizer was delicious and so were the burritos. I had the chicken mole and my husband had the pork. Loved the presentation as well. My only suggestion is that they could have seasoned the black beans as they were pretty boring! I would have served the black beans whole with onions, garlic, cilantro and some chilis instead of the refried type that had no flavor. The banana bread pudding with tequila on top was wonderful! We will definitely go back for more!"

"If you've read earlier reviews you'll know I love Zapoteca, but this visit was a disappointment. Friday evening and the place was packed and in the dining room the noise level was actually painful, it was so loud! I was there with my partner and we had to shout to hear each other across the table and finally we just gave up talkinga and ate as fast as we could so we could get out of there. It was also brutally hot, a bad combination. The drinks, usually perfect, were carelessly mixed and we had to send them back, something I've never even considered doing. The food was excellent as usual but lack of ambiance far outweighed the food. Too bad! I'll only be going back on an off-weekend evening, in hopes the noise is less excrutiating."

"We have been wanting to try Zapoteca for a few years. I thought that it would be perfect for Maine Restaurant Week because the plates are normally quite expensive. I was very pleased with the drinks I ordered, especially the ginger margarita! The guacamole was delightful and dinner was served promptly for the amount of people who were dining. I ordered the RW vegetarian option, which was a veggie taco followed by a sort of stuffed pepper with heavenly refried beans. My wife ordered a similar dish, except hers had mushrooms in the filling, and it was AMAZING. We ended up switching meals! My only complaint about food is that it was SO SPICY, I had a hard time tasting the other flavors. Also, the ambient noise was ridiculously loud."

"We had a fine dinner at Zapoteca. The only problem was that the queso fondido - shared with my husband - was so good, full of mushrooms, that I had little room for my carnitas. That was also good, and I would have enjoyed more of it, wrapped in the warm tortillas with great black beans, if I hadn't been so full. My husband's enchiladas suisa were excellent, loaded with chicken and with a nice light sauce, and again those wonderful beans. Service was friendly, unintrusive and very pleasant. There will be a repeat performance."
