Voted “Top Five Izakayas In North America” by Bon Appétit Magazine in 2011; topping “Industry and Readers Choice” 2012 awards for Best Japanese and Best Izakaya in the Georgia Straight weekly: and “Best Casual Chain, Silver” by Vancouver Magazine in 2012, Hapa Izakaya offers a winning combination of a sexy room, well-priced portions of Japanese tapas, sushi, cocktails and premium sake. When Lea and Justin Ault introduced Hapa in 2003 they exploded the izakaya concept in Vancouver, setting the bar high for the host of contenders that followed. In 2010 Hapa was the first izakaya to join the Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise™ seafood conservation program and one of only a handful of Japanese restaurant partners in the program to date. Hapa continues to be a standout for its unique blend of food, fun and culture.
"Great deals on the Happy Hour food!! My only complaint was the non-alcoholic drinks! I am pregnant so I opted for a virgin drink and it ended up being more expensive than my husband's beer!! Definitely felt ripped off!!"

"We were celebrating our 14th wedding anniversary. Was noisily & cheerfully welcomed, as is, I suppose, the Japanese tradition for these such eating establishments. Seated and greeted promptly by our friendly waiter. The lemon/pear cocktail was delicious. We ordered a variety of dishes, the Hapa Chicken salad was tender, deliciously marinated in teriyaki and we will definitely order this tasty salad again. The Ebi Mayo cones were so delicious we each had a double order, disappointing however was the Beef Short Ribs that were tough with far too much gristle - very unfortunate. The Dynamite Roll was small but delicious as expected...Too bad they didn't continue the tradition of including on their menu our favourite Tempura Lobster Rolls!"

"Recommended by the hotel staff, Hapa is a good sushi place (the asparagus in our rolls was fresh, crisp, delicious). But the joint was loud. Really loud. With god-awful techno music on a loop track (same tune, over and over and over and over). So, while the sushi was OK, and the service very good, I wouldn't go back due to the ambiance. I had a headache leaving the joint. One bit of ambiance was pretty awesome - the sushi chef with the red mohawk. That was pretty cool. I hope the music choice wasn't his."

"As I keep mentioning - fabulous restaurant but I really don't understand the screaming. It's incredibly annoying when you're trying to have a conversation and the hostess is yelling every two minutes and then all the chefs join in. Several people that I have gone with comment on this. Just an FYI, they do NOT do this in Japan!"

"Fast and professional service, with a great menu selection that never disappoints. Food arrived extremely prompt after placing our order and was delicious! The KINOKO ISHI-YAKI is my all time favorite dish."

"I loved the vibrant yet romantic ambiance to this restaurant. It's perfect for a group outing for some drinks or a private date with a nice oceanfront view. The food was great and there were definitely a lot of different choices on the menu. I would definitely go back to try some more of their dishes. Also, the service was great and helpful."

"I love the Hapa Izakaya restaurants and this is the 3rd I've been to. It's also my least favourite. It was VERY loud inside, which is great if that's what you're looking for, but it wasn't what I was looking for. The food was great, service friendly- overall a dependable choice, but I far prefer the Robson location to this one."

"Outstanding quality food and sushi, but if you're going for the sushi, it is VERY expensive compared to other options in Vancouver. Our sushi lunch for 2 with a 15% tip came to $76.50."

"We made a reservation for 6pm but didn't get seated until 6:25pm, and that is after we asked the hostess twice. The response was that our table wasn't ready so they ended up seating us at another table (which was vacant since 6pm). Our waitress took 15 minutes before serving us and that was because we waved her down. The food was good. I've been to other Hapa and had great experience so I just won't go back to this one in the future."

"First time for dinner at this lunch time favorite and was equally impressed. Sushi, sashimi and seafood dishes are fresh, fresh, fresh and really reasonably price for quality. Try the sablefish - it's succulent and not overcooked...yum."

"Visited on Friday, February 15, 2013 The reason for my negative review is usually all Hapa's in Vancouver are really good, however, this visit we were really disappointed and frankly turned-off from visiting all Hapas in the future. 4 girls decided to visit Hapa for their happy hour and although the food was good (as usual), it was the service that was incredibly disappointing and poor. The server didn't come around for 30 minutes, eventually we had to flag down the nearest server to get her to take our order, then she got our drinks wrong and had total attitude about it, actually made us feel guilty for calling her on it. If you are looking for a good happy hour, you will get a great list of food items but the service was atrocious"

"Was there for 'Hapa hour' - great choice of tapas to share with the girls. Was a little disappointed in the calamari (it was quite tough) and the hot wings (a bit dry), but overall the food was good. Beef tataki was the best! Service got a little confusing as we ended up having 2 or 3 different servers, so some things got lost in communication. Swanky spot, good drink specials, and a fun atmosphere. Overall a good night; I'd go again, but be a little more particular about my choices."

"Everything in the restaurant was pretty good, food was good as well as the scenery. Except the music was too loud that sometimes I am not able to hear what other people was saying. It will be better if the music could lower a bit."

"Exceptional food and service. Our meals were delivered quickly and our waitress was amazing - she gave us great recommendations on the menu. I found it to be a bit loud and the hostess yelling out something every time she sat someone was a bit over the top. Otherwise, a very pleasant experience and I'll continue to come back to this restaurant over and over..."

"The portions were really small. The beef tetaki was sliced so thin and filled with garnish - that it was so disappointing. My husband first order of beer did not come until we were finished with our first course and the second beer came after we were finished with the main course. We ended up ordering another small plate from the regular menu because we were both still hungry and secondly because my husband do not normally drink beer and eat dessert at the same time."

"My only disappointment was they do not serve the dinner menu until 5:30 pm. We had made a 5 pm reservation so we could get to an early show. When I made the reservation there was nothing to lead me to understand we could not have dinner earlier than 5:30 pm."

"The food was excellent however my friend found a piece of glass in his dessert. The staff was a little slow to react to the issue but once they found out how serious it was, they quickly brought over a glass of wine for everyone as well as a full-sized dessert for my friend. All in all, it was a good night."
