Avalon Bistro - Downingtown
Avalon Bistro is a festive neighborhood-oriented BYOB in Downingtown (suburban Philadelphia) serving tapas style rustic Italian cuisine. Our price fix menu is served in small portions family style, promoting social interaction while giving everyone the opportunity to try many foods. Each person orders 1 main dish and any other 2 items (flatbreads, salads, soups, small plates) they choose. Each person receives 3 shareable small plates. Most portions are 6-8 bites. We also offer an extensive cheese program.
Chef John Brandt-Lee's sister restaurant, Avalon West Chester, has received many accolades, including Main Line Today's "Best BYOB" and New York Magazine's list of "101 of America's Most Delicious Noodle Dishes." In continuing this tradition, Avalon Pasta Bistro's menu include dishes, such as Crab & Lobster Ravioli in a Saffron Tomato Mussel Jus; Veal Cheek Ragu; and Ricotta Gnocchi with Apricot Ver Jus Sauce.

"It was our first time at Avalon and it was a special occasion. I noted this when I made the reservation and that was not acknowledged when we came in nor when we were seated. After we sat, it took a good 15 minutes for our waitress to come over to take our order. The food was good (especially the cheese board!), but we will probably check out other restaurants in the area before returning."

"Wonderful food; attentive service; loud patrons along with wooden floors, beamed ceilings, lack of draperies make for a "shout to be heard" dining experience. Unfortunately, that is the way it is in 90% of the restaurants today. Makes me wonder if people have forgotten how to speak in conversational tones...."

"My husband and I had a wonderful dinner. Loved the bright fresh atmosphere. Although the noise level was a little high it was still a beautiful setting. We shared the chili cured olives. Apricots with olives--great combo! Nonnas overnight Chicken exceeded every expectation. This goat cheese stuffed pasta was wonderful. My husband had the lamb Bolognese and he loved it. Certainly not your typical everyday italian/american cuisine. We can't wait to go back!"

"We have dined at Avalon Bistro several times and have always enjoyed our meal. This weekend we went with friends who had never been, and they loved it also! We did the chef's tour menu, which to me is a no brainer, especially with a group of 4, when you each get 2 small plates, it's a great way to share and try almost everything! I ordered the same entree as I had at my last visit, effen hot shrimp with cavatelli...the sauce has veal stock so it is rich and delicious! My husband had the Skate special which was excellent. Our friends had the Ciopanno and Linguine with Clam sauce...they really enjoyed their meals. The mussels are amazing, served in a gorgonzola/lemony broth that is incredibly addictive!"

"My wife and I always enjoy coming to Avalon Bistro. We always have the cheese plate and do the pre-fix. We usually go this route due to the fact that they usually have what we want on the Pre-fix and it saves us a couple of dollars. It is BYOB which again can save you some money as well. Food was and is out of sight. Great attention to detail and can taste the passion in their food!"

"Fantastic restaurant!! We got the chef's tasting menu. 2 small plates, 1 entree plus desert for $40 … great value. More importantly, the food was incredible. We loved the white sardines, smoked salmon and mussels. My wife's lamb bolognese and my crab ravioli were each one of the best dishes we have ever had. We will be back!!!"

"The lovely atmosphere was overcome by a large group that were extremely loud. Considering it is a very small room it would be a problem anytime there is a large group. This was my first visit and while it was disappointing that we had difficulty having conversation, the food made up for it - excellent! "We've been away so it's been a couple of months since we ate at the Bistro. What was a great little spot has gotten better, with a revised seating plan and some new menu item. We both opted for the delicious cod entree and I started with terrific pureed mushroom soup with crab meat. We split a luscious nutella crepe for dessert. Service from Andrea and Kris was great! Add in the complimentary sangria or Victory beer and what's not to like?"

"The restaurant is in a house in Downingtown, which makes it feel like you are going to a friend's hours for dinner. We were seated next to the fireplace which was nice and cozy. Since it is a BYOB you can bring your favorite drink or indulge in the complimentary Victory beer on tap or the house made Sangria. The food was creative and very flavorful and the portion sizes were just right. We really enjoyed it and will be back!"

"First visit, 4 of us…..much effort goes into the menu and service. Likes/dislikes were each a matter of personal preference. A fun evening, an adventure of sorts on the plate. byob is a beautiful thing. Service waned as the evening progressed but overall a welcome addition to Downingtown. We will return :-)"

"The Bistro is the best restaurant in Downingtown hands down. It is an awesome place locally for great cuisine that is comparable to many of the great restaurants in Philadelphia and is a must try if you have not been. The new menu is great and has a real, comforting quality (i.e. escarole and porcini soups) to all the offerings. The simplicity of some of the dishes provide some of the greatest flavors(Ex. Mozz & herbed ricotta) and who knew oranges with salt, paprika, and olive oil could be so wonderful? We had scallops/black risotto & clams/linguini. For dessert croissant bread pudding and nutella pbj crepe (THX JBL for bringing back the crepe, it is hands down one of the best things EVER!)"

Valentine day, such a treat! 4-course dinner was delicious. Smaller portions of variety of tastes and textures. All of items can make easily to the TV show “The best dish I ever ate”, no kidding. We liked the presentation of food, thoughtfulness of our servers, the décor. This is BYOB, so bottle of great Brunello Di Montalcino provided by my husband added to the wonderful experience."
