Lavagna - Washington DC
Lavagna opened with a concept to keep food simple, fresh, and Italian, and Executive Chef Darren Maas and Owner Stephen Cheung have developed and refined this concept to include ingredients from local farms. “The freshest and highest quality ingredients we can offer come from this region,” says Stephen. “The closer you can get to the source of the food, the better it is,” adds Chef Darren. “And not only is the quality better, but using products from this region is better for our local economy and the environment.”
All menu items at Lavagna are prepared from scratch, including our pasta. The menu changes weekly as well as seasonally so it can feature only the freshest local ingredients. Lavagna is expanding the house-made charcuterie program and is adding a line of house-made local preserves, with offerings varying week to week. Lavagna also offers a variety of Italian wines, beers from around the world and distinctive craft cocktails.

"My gluten free meal, the Seafood Corzetti was not that flavorful, however, if you get the gluten free pasta with the meat sauce, it is quite delicious. They get cool points from me, for even having the gluten free pasta option.
Oh, their starters, the rib and the pear salad are really good.
Noise factor: If there are not that many patrons, noise from children can travel easily, probably due to it's industrial design.
Overall, I enjoyed my experience. I would recommend this restaurant."

"Had dinner reservations for a table of 5. We had the upstairs basically to ourselves, much to our benefit. The food and drinks were wonderful and the service excellent. Everyone in our party was very happy with the meal and none of us had been there before. I'd love to try it again for brunch or more of their delicious pastas."

"I had brunch at Lavagna for the first time this weekend for my birthday. The hostess was friendly and we immediately started off with bottomless mimosas. What was really cool, was that Lavagna is a farm to table concept restaurant and they had a list of the local farms they used on a chalkboard on the wall and the bottom of the menu.
Great: the truffle potatoes are divine. Plus my friend had some cream fraiche with her omelette, which made the potatoes even better.
Good: I also had the marscapone pancakes with nutella and fruit.
O.K.: The mimosas were mediocre (I know, it's bottomless. what did I expect?) and the bacon was extremely salty. it was also inexplicably served in a bowl in tiny strips.

"I loved the ambiance of this restaurant. The wait staff was attentive and fast. I recommend making reservations as it is busy on Sundays. I had the pancakes which came with fruit and ordered a side of eggs as well. The pancakes were great along with the fresh fruit; the scrambled eggs could've been better. Our table had the bottomless mimosas for $10...they were good except I was stuffed from the pancakes I only had two mimosas. Overall, great place to go and chat with friends."

"I had the Goat Cheese and Pepper Preserve omelet and roasted potatoes with truffle oil on the side, all with a mixed berry Bellini! Oh my goodness, yum! The omelet was well done, Bellini perfect, and the potatoes were out of control delicious. Love this brunch!"

"We were looking for a moderately priced dinner and Lavagna delivered. We ordered the meat and cheese board and enjoyed it all! Our entrees included Risotto, Ravioli and Spagetti and Meatballs. Everything was wonderful! When back in the city, we will return to Lavagna."

"Who wouldn't love $12 botttomless mimosas?! I was visiting a friend in DC and we knew we would have all morning/late afternoon to enjoy our ourselves so why not make a reservation at a well-recommended brunch spot? We weren't disappointed. We split the pancakes as appetizers and each ordered our own egg dishes. Truffled home fries? A MUST! Though we were full, it was well worth stuffing ourselves!
And when they say bottomless, they do make sure your glass never hits empty! Granted (and it still baffles me why) we were one of the few seated tables in the restaurant, but our waiter was most attentive and very nice.
All around, great time. Thumbs up. Recommended!"

"Went here for Mother's Day for a nice Italian meal. It could have been any old day as far as the staff was concerned, service was not attentive. Served stale tepidly warm bread, so not a good start. Pastas were good though, we tried three different ones and all were freshly made and very tasty. Then it went downhill again with bad desserts and coffee! They've turned the traditional tiramisu into a horrible mousse and cannot make a cappuccino to save their lives! I'd avoid everything else except the pasta dishes here."

"Live Italian food and really enjoyed my experience at Lavagna. I like that they make pasta from scratch. I would hope that they would season the pasta better. The dish I had was good but a little bland. I loved the music and it made for a perfect first date. The decor was cozy and you felt comfortable. They have an extensive wine list from various regions of Italy and the waitress for very helpful in picking out wines and dishes. I would go back, maybe get a different dish."

"When with a party of six and everyone one really liked almost everything they had. We tried the following Charcuterie items; spicy italian goat cheese, garlic herb havarti, hickory smoked cheddar, rillette, smoked lanza, tasso ham and carne secca and thought all were great. We also loved the rigatoni Pesto, Shenandoah short rib, papa weavers porchetta. The only disappointments were the meatballs and bolonese sauce which we found to have too much herbs (oregano we think).

"Nice street views if near front of restaurant. Our waitress was very knowledgeable about the food ingredients and preparation. The fettuccine bolognese was good but salty. Pear arugula salad was delicious w/ a nice balsamic vinaigrette. I had the fresh trout special, it was very good and the vegetable accompaniment was a perfect addition. "This was a very nice restaurant with an interesting menu and excellent service. However, on a very busy Saturday night the food came up short with one pasta dish undercooked and the signature chicken dish overcooked and a bit dry. In addition, the noise level made it difficult for my friends and I to hear each other talk. All that said, I think that this place has great potential and is worth another visit, perhaps during mid-week."

"Lavagna was great! I had been wanting to try it for brunch for a while and it lived up to my expectations. Great brunch with wonderful food and service. The staff was friendly and accommodating to help my group get a table outside. Mimosas were absolutely wonderful too. I will definitely be going back soon!"

"This was the perfect location for a brunch with friends and family after a 5K race last weekend. They were so accommodating of our large party (13 people) and kept the great service up the entire time we were there. Everyone enjoyed their food- making this a wonderful experience!"

"We had a very nice time at Lavagna for brunch once our party was able to arrive (parking is a nightmare-WARNING!). Our waiter was very attentive and patient. Service slowed up a bit when another large party was sat near us, so we were unable to get salt for our entrees or another round of drinks, but overall they were very accommodating. The food was good, but it didn't WOW me, drinks were delicious. I appreciate that the food is taken great care of and sourced from local farms, as the bacon was superb and the eggs light and fresh. The bread was also phenomenal."

"The waitresses (we ended up switching tables, so we had two different waitresses) didn't seem very knowledgeable about the menu or wine list. They weren't very attentive, and seemed to have the singular roles of taking our order and bringing the bill. It wasn't about how nice or pleasant they were (which was also an issue). They just seemed inept. We had high expectations about the scratch kitchen concept, but my pasta was broken up, really over-cooked, and soggy. As I bit into it, it released water like a sponge. This completely washed out the flavor. Lastly, my food was maybe room temperature. I recall searching my plate for something that was actually warm or hot. The high note was the host, who seemed very knowledgeable & attentive."

"I was really disappointed that a whole food, farm to table inspired restaurant was serving corn-syrup based "maple syrup." Very odd considering that the server told us their pancakes were on of the biggest hits during brunch. This definitely detracts from the restaurant's reputation about the quality of food it serves and where it comes from."

"I came across Lavagna a few months ago and popped in for a drink while waiting for a friend. Great find! I was impressed by the friendly reception and the relaxed ambiance of the upstairs bar area. My friend and I ate there later that evening and both enjoyed our entrees, the mushroom-rich risotto and a wonderful ravioli dish. My spouse and I returned last weekend and were very pleased with the ambiance and the emphasis on local sourcing for the delicious dishes we ordered. We sat upstairs this time surrounded by couples w/young kids, but it was fine and we all enjoyed our meals. The short rib appetizer is superb and I loved the fettuccine bolognese. My spouse had the pappardelle chicken, another new favorite. We will be back!"

"Lavagna is becoming one of my favorite places to brunch in DC. The bottomless mimosas are great and so is my favorite brunch dish: the biscuits and gravy with italian sausage. Our server, Rich was very attentive and friendly. The owner also approached our table to ask us about the service, which I thought was a great detail. The ambiance is very nice as well: we sat outside with a nice view of barracks row and great people watching. Looking forward to dinner there!"

"This place was a pleasent find. We were a little displeased with the long wait to be seated despite a reservation but they were very apologetic and they provided the table with an appetizer as a gesture to make amends. The atmosphere was comfortable and lively. The menu knowledge, timing, and pleasentness of the wait staff was very good. There were a number of us there and we sampled the Bell&Evans Chicken as well as a variety of pasta dishes. The homemade pasta was delicious and the chicken was flavorful. It was also affordable from my perspective, everyone had a drink or wine flight plus an entree and we got away for around $200 with tip for a table of six, not easy to do in DC! We will be back for sure and telling friends."
