"Beautiful views and great atmosphere. A promising menu. The food was good but not exceptional considering the price. We went on a Monday and there were no Chef specials and they were out of their signature dessert which was pretty disappointing. Our overall experience was good despite the service we got from out waitress who was competent, but had no personality and made it clear that she did not want to be working that night. In fact, in some ways, the whole staff, seemed to have that attitude. I would recommend ELA's but perhaps not on a Monday and definitely not with the waitress we had. With a little work ELA's could easily elevate itself to an upper tier restaurant on Hilton Head Island."

"Ate at Ela's last year & remember it being good; not so this time. Either server did not know how dishes were prepared or chef changed things up but the shrimp ceviche did NOT contain avocado, and seemed more like cooked shrimp in some sort of tasteless juice - I can't imagine how real ceviche could not have some zing to it - a lot of shrimp siting on some shredded iceberg lettuce - was really tasteless. Crab cakes should be called "crab discs", no discernible crab, tasted like the deep fried breading and sauce that came with. Signature dish. Really? Too much BUTTER/oil/cream on everything, including asparagus and risotto. It is possible to cook delicious food without resorting to buttering everything up. Very disappointing."

"This was suppose to be a nice Mother's Day Brunch with my husband. But, Ela's is probably the worst place we have been to for Brunch.The selections were very limited and the portions hideously small. I ordered the Lobster/Asparagus Fritta. The "lobster" was immitation and the eggs bland, with a fishy taste. No cheese added to make them creamy or tasteful.
My husband got the Crab Eggs Benedict and they were, as well, hideously small. I don't even know where you find eggs that tiny?
We know Mother's Day is a big day to make money, but if I am going to pay $20 for eggs it better be enjoyable.
Would not go back for Brunch."

"As a local, we were excited to try this restaurant - due to the beautiful location. The restaurant was fairly empty, and we asked for outside seating. An older man in a white jacket merely said "NO" - no explanation or apology. Was he the owner? Manager? Maitre D? When we left, he never said thank you, or asked about our meal. The menu was uninspiring, and the food flavorless. Prices are high for the food to be so mediocre. The table service was good, although it took the kitchen a long time to get the entrees out. We keep hoping that someone will put in a good restaurant at this venue because it is one of the best spots on the island. But Ela's Grille isn't it. We ran into two different groups who had also just dined there who agreed."

"I took my wife there for her first time after two previous great experiences I had. I had raved about the food to my wife and guests, however, this time it did not equal my past two experiences. The best meal was the calamari appetizer. My steak was a bit too fatty and lacked flavor. One of our guests ordered the short rib platter and although it was tasty, at least a third of it was fatty. My wife ordered the lobster and avocado appetizer and unfortunately lacked the flavor of its key ingredients. My husband really enjoyed his English beer and my wife loved the wine selection."

"We had asked for an outdoor table (it rained) or a scenic indoor one as it was a birthday celebration. We were very pleased to be accommodated at a second floor window table with a great view. Food was, as usual, excellent as was the service. Only small drawback was a very loud table near us in a relatively small space. "We were seated at an outside table as per request. It's lovely. Temps cooled off as the evening progressed, but a torch / heater helped a lot. I ordered Lobster Ceviche Martini, Beef Carpaccio with arugula and shaved parmesan, and wild mushroom risotto. My spouse ordered the Pear - Gorgonzola - arugula sald with horseradish dressing, and the catch of the day - a pan-fried Grouper steak (is that what you call it?) with vegetables. They served me the shrimp ceviche (a special) vs. the lobster, but the shrimp ceviche was zesty and delicious, so I ate it anyway. The pear-gorgonzola-arugula salad had no pears. Beef carpaccio great. Risotto too rich for me (too much butter), but good mushroom flavor. Excellent grouper."

"We were quite disappointed by our recent visit to Ela's. On the good side, the views from our table were very nice. It was also very quiet, but that may have been because there were only 5 tables of 4 there that night. In spite of this the service was extremely slow. Our waiter only rarely came by. We had to wait to order appetizers. There was a 20 minute wait between our appetizers and our entres. The food was also hit and miss. The scallops were done nicely, but were very salty. They were served over a crab risotto that had great flavor, but was almost inedibly salty. The flounder was cooked to perfection, but was served over mashed potatoes that were barely above room temperature. Maybe we hit an off night but we won't be going back."

"We booked Ela's at the last minute because it was listed on OpenTable and we didn't have a plan for Easter. We had a great time and the food for fantastic. The restaurant's location on the water and on the second floor gives almost all the tables a good view of Shelter Cove. Sam, our waiter, was very knowledgeable and friendly, as was the rest of the staff. We will come back, probably during the evening to see the cove at night. In warmer weather, I'd recommend an outside table."

"This was our first time and if someone wanted us to go again we would, but if I was picking I think their are much better options. Food and service were good...not great.
Wine list was limited and the server had no clue about any of the wines.

"Enjoyed the view and the table. Service was very good but started a bit slow. Food was prepared well. A bit pricey in my mind. I still never get used to a $38 8oz filet. wine list was ok Missing some nice selections. Maybe a Malbac or two? Would still eat there again, but would need to be a special occasion at those prices"

"I dined at Ela's last week with my wife and two friends while we were visiting Hilton Head. It was a mixed experience. My companions were pleased with their entrees (two scallops and one swordfish). My entree (the featured special, a paella with scallops, mussels, and clams) was not very good. The chicken was barely cooked, the rice was soggy, two of the four mussels were unopened. It wasn't bad enough to send back (and I am not "that guy") but not good.
It's not fair to pan a place for one dish on one night, so I will only go so far as to say I would not eat there again."

"I understand that it is fairly new. Our overall experience was very good, but a few criticisms. This resaurant is LOUD. Perhaps partly because we were seated next to a table of 8, but other areas without large parties seemed noisy as well. The service was lackluster at best. Assigning one waiter to parties of 6 and 8 simultaneously as well as other diners does not make for an overall good experience. Seated for over an hour before our appetizers even arrived. We were NEVER offered water after the original service. We had to ask 3 additional times for more water.
Food was excellent, although swordfish a little overcooked and dry. Wine list limited. Has great potential, esp with the view. Staff needs some brushing up."

"We came back to see if food had improved and my husband's steak was great but my scallops were just so-so. Other spots on the island do scallops much better. We shared lobster nachos which were delicious but very messy to eat! We did not have an amazing sunset this visit, but this would be the spot for sunset viewing-- great view!"

"This was our second trip to ELA's. Again, the food was great and presented well. My 6 year old granddaughter was with us and they have a short but very adequate children's menu. Now that the time has changed, we had the opportunity to look over the harbor at Shelter Cover. I will try it again when it is warmer so that we can sit outside on the balcony."
