The Colosseum Restaurant
The Colosseum Restaurant is an award-winning Italian restaurant offering elegant surroundings and exquisite Southern Italian cuisine. Opened in 1987 by Chef Annibale Todesca, the Colosseum has become an established favorite for diners in Salem, NH and the Merrimack Valley. Chef Annibale Todesca serves the same authentic Southern Italian cooking that he enjoyed growing up in Italy. Like many generations of Todescas, he ventures to the market every day to ensure that he cooks with only the freshest vegetables, seafood and highest quality meats. "The meal lacked flavor. I had Chicken Francese. This is my favorite dish and I tend to have it at all restaurants. There was plenty, but not flavorfull. I took the leftover home, doctored it up with a quick butter, flour and wine sauce added and it was good. You can not just add lemon to this dish and expect it to be good!"

"When we got to the restaurant our Open Table reservation was not in their reservation system. When I showed them my confirmation email from Open Table, they were very helpful and found us a table for 4.
Mother's Day dinner out was very nice! Meal and service were very good and Mom was very happy."

"Heard so much about this restaurant but for the price was just not over whelmed (spent almost $200 and did not even have a bottle of wine). Drove over 45 minutes to get there, went with another couple whom had not been there, and when we left we were just not that impressed. The food was just OK, appetizers were the best part of the meal, so do not believe we will be back."

"The food and the service was excellent.
The atmosphere was horrible. I requested a quiet table and confirmed it twice with the restaurant. When we arrived they tried to seat us at the table next to the hostess station just inside the door. As far away from a quiet table as you could get.
The tables are literally on top of each other. My husband and I were seated at a table for two. The other tables were so close we couldn't hear each other and had to shout to have a conversation. On my left a man's back was literally 6" from my face. My chair was bumped 3 times by wait staff going by because it was so crowded. I got up to check out the bar and went one way and then another and could not find a path to get through.

"Not being from, or living in, NH I have little knowledge of the local restaurants. This place was recommended to me by several locals and I must admit that I was very pleased. I will be dining there again when I'm in the area. The food was very good and I could not find any fault in the service. While their menu had excellent choices in many areas, it did fall short in the area of seafood -- only five choices, four of which were shrimp dishes."

"I took my boyfriend to dinner for his birthday he had never been before. My family and I grew up going to the Colosseum so I already knew it was fantastic.However it had been about 20 years since I had been and was curious to know if it was still as delicious.Knowing that Anaballe was still the owner I was confident it would be a wonderful experience.We enjoyed two bottles of wine, an appetizer, entrees and dessert. The waiter was professional yet had a sense of humor. The food was delectable. My only recommendation would be to put more flavor and stuffing into the stuffed mushrooms and I wasn't used to Tiramasu being so thin and runny with cookie stuck in the center. The two vast textures didn't compliment each other."

"I had not been to the coliseum in years and will never go back the decor is dated the service was horrible we kept having to get someone to find our waitress, they give you just plain French stick bread with packaged butter it was gross, the food was horrible my husband got veal parm which was so tough it was hard to cut, I got the chicken francesse it was ok but the sauce was very over powering, one of my sons got chicken parm and there was just way too much sauce on it that you could not taste the chicken, and my other son got the manicotti which was a special and it was so mushy that it looked like just one big manicotti rather than 4 and again loaded with sauce. Just a horrible experience we will not be going back."

"The food was great, the owner very friendly but our waitress was rude. When my 88 yr old grandmother tried to help her by holding the bowl of grated cheese, she was quickly scolded and told her that she couldn't keep the bowl at the table. I was also surprised that the lemonade we got for our children was $4.00! My food was delicious but I thought very expensive as well."

"I recently went to The Colosseum for lunch. I made reservations a head of time but when I got there the hostess couldn't find our reservations. After 10 minutes they finally found it an sat us. We ordered an appetizer which was great. We ordered the meal at the same time. After the waitress brought the appetizer, which took a half hour, we didn't see her for another half hour. She then comes back and asks if we want coffee and desert. It told her we didn't even get our meal yet. She said, oh you didn't get your meal yet? So she checks on it and tells us the order wasn't put in. We were seated at 12:30pm and didn't receive our entrees until 2:30pm. Food was outstanding but the service was terrible."

"We celebrated Valentine's Day on Sunday and it was an amazing experience. We enjoyed all the food we ordered and it was extremely quiet. I believe we actually shared the restaurant with two other couples. So it was like dining by ourselves. A very special treat for us. Thank-you for a wonderful experience. We enjoyed the show of the preparation of our table side Caesar salad. We ordered dessert to go-we should have eaten it there it was mushy when we got home, but that was our fault not yours. It was still awesome."

"The staff at the bar was rude. We waited almost 20 minutes before we were even acknowledged at the bar. We sat at the very back of the restauraunt where there was no music and a very noisy machine behind a door. The food however was delicious. Huge portions of authentic Italian cuisine."

"My husband and I visited the Colosseum restuarant on Valentine's Day. We had a reservation for 7:00PM, the host was able to seat us a little earlier, which was nice. We started with salads, which came quickly. I ordered the chicken broccoli alfredo and the sauce was delicious, portion size was just right. I enjoyed my meal, however, my husband was highly disappointed with the Seafood Collosseum. The price was 'market price,' which ended up being $39.99, but he only received 1 clam, 1/2 a lobster tail and the shrimp was very overcooked. He wasn't too crazy about the sauce either. He ate a little bit of it because he was hungry. The server offered to wrap it up but I told her he didn't care for it and she apologized and presented the check."

"I made a reservation for 7:00 and got there at 6:55, I was told that due to heavy traffic on route 93 north that they restaurant were running behind in their seating??..... I have no idea what that means????? I made a reservation on Valentines day so I wouldn't have to wait to long to eat. I don't mind waiting 15 minutes but our table wasn't ready until 7:45 for a 7:00 reservation, not acceptable. Luclily we found a seat at the bar and ended up eating there, it was a little noisy for Valentines day. The food was godd but the service very slow, we got there at 7:00 and didn't finish our meal until after 9:00 too long! I understand it was Valentines and they were busy but it was clear they way over booked the restaurant that night, too bad!"

"I had the pork braciole, it's was just fair ,the meat was tough and dry and the fettuccini was clumped together, my wife had the gnocchi and she liked it , my son had the chicken Marsala and it was ok also. Salads were ok, the pasta Fagioli soup was really good. Restaurant was really busy, the server was excellent , no long wait attentive to our needs, no complaints there at all. My wife and I frequented this resturant many years ago even at there old location, we absolutely loved it then, after many years we finally went back ( it's a 50 mile drive for us) , I just thought the food was a little better back then, I am disappointed but will probably give it another try in the future but not right away.

"The food was good but the service was TERRIBLE!!!! Never mind the waitress forgot our drinks (twice), then she served us ice cold coffee. Plus they stuck us (4 adults) in an area where there were several children in a large party, and we had to hear these children screeching through our meal. We went out with friends to escape our own kids, not to have to listen to someone elses. They should be conscious of this when they seat people. It took hours to get out of there because everything took so long and the waitress kept forgetting us as she had too many tables or couldn't handle what she had. Won't be going back. Two similar experiences is enough for us."
