Craftsman Restaurant
The Craftsman Restaurant serves up a unique dining experience. Come and enjoy Midwestern American cooking in a comforting and relaxing environment. The outdoor patio is the perfect place to enjoy the evening, chef Ben Jacoby's cooking, and perhaps a glass of wine or cocktail from the bar. Most of the food products come directly from the growers and producers, thereby eliminating the middleman. This doesn't mean that the food costs are less- usually they're more expensive, but it does ensure that suppliers are paid fairly for their crops and helps support and sustain the independent rural, agrarian economy. Most, if not all of the vegetable products, are certified organic. It's this commitment to quality that shows through the food at Craftsman.

"The food was fantastic. 5 of us went, had 4 different entrees, desserts, and appetizers, and there was not a single miss in the bunch. All were excellent. It is a bit noisy, but more than worth it given the quality of the food."

"Stopped in at Craftsman for a quick harissa burger and fries. A really great combination of flavors, but it took two tries to get our burgers prepared correctly. I ordered mine medium; my husband ordered his medium rare. Mine came medium, his, well done. Our server and the chef were very accommodating, and the kitchen got my husband's order correct on the second try. But that meant I had to either to let my meal get cold or finish ahead of hubby, neither of which was an appealing choice. This is the second time the kitchen has overcooked one of the burgers. Last time my "medium" came well done. They weren't crowded either time, so don't know what the problem is. Will try again, but expectations for Craftsman have been lowered."

"We had a lovely Mother's Day brunch here. The room is sun-filled, and the food was simply prepared and delicious. The maple sausage was an unexpected high point, and we loved the quiche and omelette. House-made scones are also a great choice."

"My $26steak was mediocre and my husband’s $14 hamburger was not very tasty nor did it look very appetizing. Maybe we just struck out with what we ordered but when I pay these kinds of prices for food I expect it to be good food. Service was great."

"Came here for my boyfriend's birthday to try somewhere outside the Uptown/Downtown/Northeast track. The menu was well curated, although an additional vegetarian option or two would be welcome. Nonetheless, the dishes we chose (polenta with vegetables and gnocchi with chicken) were perfectly executed and very flavorful. What blew us away, however, were the desserts. The beignets, which our server recommended ordering with a scoop of salted caramel ice cream (she was 100% right), were incredible and the brioche bread pudding was warm and well-balanced perfection all by itself. We'll definitely be back."

"This was the second time we ate here. Food is very good. The elk was delicious but tough to eat due to cut. Char was great as was hanger steak and even the reuben. The wait staff stopped filling water and when asked I was told, " I don't have any more." She didn't even go get any more as they wanted us to free up the table. We went at 4:00 and there wasn't a line waiting when we left."

"One of my favorite restaurants in the Twin Cities. I've never had a bad meal here. Would highly recommend the hanger steak, and the outdoor patio is wonderful in season. They cure their own meats as well... the charcuterie appetizer (or the cheese one) are very good."

"This was my first time at Craftsman, so I didn't know what to expect. Our reservations were at 6:30, and even though it was a Saturday evening, we were seated almost immediately. My companion ordered pasta carbonara. While it had a different flavor than my own recipe, it was still very good. On the waitresses' recommendation, I ordered their pork chop dinner. It was incredibly moist and tasty. We also had a wonderful bread pudding for dessert. I would definitely return. They have an outdoor area that looks like it would be very inviting-if spring ever arrives.

"Food was fair, nothing special. Hummus appetizer was good and the soup of the day was good. We had the hangar steak which was tough and the pork chop (appeared to be a large portion but it turned out to be a poor cut of the chop). For dessert we shared the Beignets, they were OK but we thought it was strange they did not come with ice cream, just five Beignets in a bowl.
Service: despite getting off to a slow start, she was very good.
When we were there the place was nearly full and very noisy, frequently it was hard to hear the person across the table talking."

"I don't get it. Food was just fair. We had a a party of 4. Entrees: trout, gnocchi and 2 hangar steaks with fries. The trout was ok, nothing specia, the presentation was bad and the vegetables needed to be cooked a bit more. The gnocchi was the best of the three dishes but not worth coming out for. The hangar steak was tough for both of the people who ordered it. The bearnaise sauce was good. The wine was bad and the wait staff was amazingly slow. The apple cranberry crisp, overly sweet and one dimensional. If it weren't for the carmel ice cream, we would have sent it back. Despite all this the place was packed. I understand wanting to support a neighborhood restaurant, but this place isn't very good. We won't be back."

"The food was amazing! Everything was unusual and delicious. The flavors were incredible. Great service as well. I had the seared gnocchi with winter greens, my husband had the whole trout, and our friends had the short ribs and Carbonara. For starters we had the Charcuterie and the Artisian Cheeses. "The modest location gives little clue to the treat that lies inside. An attractive dining room, warm but discreet service and, best of all, food that surprises with remarkable flavor. This was our first trip to Craftsman and while the reviews were very encouraging we were still surprised by how great the food tasted. The Elk was a first for us, and delicious, while the accompanying squash was out of this world. The two together were mouth-watering. "Simply said, this is one of my favorite restaurants in Minneapolis. You know it's an excellent choice because it is busy every night of the week as it has been for years - it's not just the "flavor of the month." Food is fresh, seasonal and local - straightforward and prepared and presented beautifully. Disappointed that venison special was substituted with duck, (chose another entree instead) but otherwise meal was excellent. Service was attentive in the beginning but as dining room filled and we were completing our meal, service slowed considerably. We skipped dessert because it took too long between when our plates were cleared and the server returned. Overall a high recommend - great food, fair prices, nice atmosphere"

"Took my mom there for her 60th per the recommendation of a friend. I had no idea this place existed even though I often pass it on my way home from work. Everything from the service to the food to the decor was outstanding. Great seasonal specials, amazing cocktails. Definitely try the charcuterie. "My husband had the duck leg confit. For being a very picky person he thought it was the best thing he has ever eaten. I got the pork belly and it was very good but not as good as my husbands.
