Opa
Opa is a new Modern Greek restaurant and bar located in Center City's Midtown Village neighborhood. The menu features a fresh take on traditional Greek flavors. Featured items from the mezedes (small plates) include herbed keftedes (meatballs) in a ouzo-tomato sauce, octopus and spinach croquettes served with a smokey feta dip. Large plates offer a variety of items such as striped bass and pastitsio. The signature cocktail list and Greek wine selection offer the perfect complement to your meal. Acclaimed designer, Jun Aizaki/Creme, created an alluring setting which includes a striking birch branch canopy.
Walk-in seating is available at the 24 seat bar and offers the full menu.

"First time and was wowed by the soup and salads. Fresh and tasty, and a nice size serving for the price. The Lamb Gyros were a bit of a dissapointment, not very savory, but all else was awesome. I would definitely return."

"I hope the owners of Opa are able to fix this because the food was really very good. The service was just awful. There is no host/hostess, so you stand at the front door until you are able to flag down a server. We asked for an outside table, and the server told us one was ready as soon as it was cleared. Fifteen minutes later it was cleared, and I saw a different server at the front door directing another couple to the table we were wating for. The food took forever to come out. When it did come out, the main dishes came out before the appetizer, and then the appetizer came out and it was wrong. Just a mess."

"I've been to Opa twice now. The food is pretty good, but nothing special. On this most recent visit, I had the beet salad and whole grilled red snapper. The fish was fresh and well prepared. It was served with potatoes and swiss chard. I don't eat potatoes, so I asked for extra greens and they were happy to accommodate. Unfortunately, the swiss chard was pretty bland. The dressing on the beet salad was also overly sweet, so I wasn't all that impressed with the starter either. My friend had one of the flatbreads as a starter and thought it was delicious.The highlight of our dining experience was our incredibly sweet and knowledgeable server."

"We had a great dinner appeasing both the meat-eating and vegetarian variety of diners. The zucchini chips were amazing as was the grilled octopus. Ask for a seat by the open windows to enjoy the best of the ambiance inside and the outside breeze!"

"Restaurant called me on Friday to confirm our Saturday reservation for 5 people at 7pm.
When the hostess finally arrived, we were told that we were confirmed for FOUR people. I waited with my party for 15-20 minutes while she got someone over to help her figure out where we could sit. Normally this would be a mere inconvenience, but I was on crutches and we had a wheelchair which I ALSO explained to whomever called me to confirm the day before. I also overheard the hostess apologize to ANOTHER table about the wait because of us and the crutches. No apology to us for the mistake, the lame table or the wait.)
Food and cocktails were delicious - a real shame because the service was so poor that I'd never go back."

"Walked in there wasn't even a maitre'd. We ended up having dinner at the bar. Drinks were ok, my friends soup came almost 45 minutes and we were done with our appetizer. I would only come for drinks, not the food. Of course, I forgot to check with my open table. It's ok, I'm not coming back."

"I had drinks and dinner with a group of friends. The drinks were ok. The service was great. "We feel like we found a gem at Opa. We were seated immediately and the service was attentive throughout our diner. Both our appetizers and main courses were beautifully prepared and de;icious. We had a 6 PM reservation and had tickets for an 8 PM Show. We took our time, enjoyed our dining experience and had time to stoll to the theater. We're going back next Saturday to introduce Opa to our friends!"

"This was my first time at Opa. Although the waitress was slightly rude the other staff made up for it along with the food! The waitress recommended the two of us order 4 small plates and 2 entrees which would have been entirely too much food!! We instead ordered 4 delicious "small" plates. The spread was fantastic, the hummus was to die for! The food runner even offered us some extra pita so we could finish all the dips. The quinoa and cucumber salad was refreshing and the cranberry vinagarette made it just that much more. The Saganaki was a first for us, the outside edges were so crisp and the inside nice and gooey. Yum! The fried calamari was pretty standard, the roasted red pepper dip a nice surprise. Definitely will return!"

"I find Opa confusing. Though a beautiful space, the tables were too close to each other and to the bar; at full capacity, this restaurant becomes uncomfortable. Near the end of our meal, a large group formed at the bar, and we couldn't hear each other, had to deal with butts close to our table/food, and upon leaving, didn't have space to put our coats on. Service is equally confusing: servers are nice, but in the beginning of our meal, with only half the tables full, it took 10-15 minutes for a server to come to our table, and there were no runners to even fill our water glasses! The food is tasty and beautifully presented, though many dishes were over-salted. I'd like to return, but the experience was mediocre at best."

"This was our second time at Opa. Our server Katie was professional, upbeat and attentive. I was happy to see the restaurant was busy. The Saganaki is a must try if you never had it before. We also had Braised Lamb Shank and Rabbit. Both entree's were cooked to perfection. Drinks, appetizers and entrees with tip for 2 under $100.00 in the city. How can you go wrong? Love this place. "Came here on a Sunday, although the menu WAS limited, we wanted something tasty but inexpensive, all three of us went for various gyro sandwiches, which hit the spot, and being a vegetarian, really liked the seitan in mine. Our appetizers were spinach croquettes and pan-fried cheese, really enjoyed those. I think my parents were put off by the first waitress that came our way but the second was a bit more friendly. I've come to this place before for happy hour, drinks are fine here, but not sure how their more distinctive dishes stack up. Overall very reasonably priced."

"Two couples, age around 60, for a birthday dinner. A Fri nite, so the bar was crowded w/younger folks and loud when we arrived for our 7 pm res. (Bar in center, tables around the outer walls, with no separation.) The sound level got much better by 7:45, though. Enjoyed a variety of foods - the spinach and the octopus appetizers, and the calamari (especially good). The chick-pea garnish that came with the octopus was so good we ordered another plate of that alone. Chicken, pastitsio and beef main courses were also all quite nice. Waiter brought one glass of the wrong wine, but replaced it w/o dispute. With 3 before-dinner drinks and 2 glasses of wine among the 4 of us, four dinners and two desserts, it came to an average of $50/per."

"I took my wife there for valentines day. It was only moderately busy until we were leaving, but the waitress was very attentive. It was cozy and romantic (almost like being under water somehow -- but in a good way). The food was delicious too. It was a special menu for Valentines day -- a 4 course meal. Everything came out hot, and right on time. I will definitely be going back to see what it's like for a regular evening."

"I really, really wanted to like Opa. Unfortunately, we found their service incredibly poor - from the 20 minute wait to be seated regardless of our reservation to the extra 20 minutes we had to wait to meet our server - and their food cold and tough. The meat was all overcooked and all the warm dishes had cooled while waiting on our server, who we could barely flag down to pay. In an area where fantastic restaurants are plentiful, I'm surprised Opa has been able to remain open."

"Opa usually does very well, which is why we return time and again. This particular Sunday afternoon they were short-staffed which explains for the poor service review. For every other occasion we have visited, the staff has been uncommonly competent making for an experience worth repeating."

"We went on Opa's 2nd Anniversary Celebration because we wanted to take advantage of their $2 menu. When I got there, I noticed it was much more of a bar scene than I originally anticipated. Also, the items we ordered from the special $2 menu were considerably smaller than expected. Then again, I suppose we should have known we'd get such portion sizes after seeing a few being carried around the place as well as the place being bar-centric. The waitresses seemed rather flustered and initially got our change wrong but then purposely gave us too much to make up for it. As for food, while they were tiny portions, they were very well made, and it was very authentic and delicious Greek food. I plan to go back for a real meal!"

"The food was fine, but took an hour and a half to receive our appetizer (a cold plate of hummus, pita, etc.). Our server forgot our drinks at the bar, and overall seemed distracted. Probably should have taken it as a sign that we were able to get a reservation at 8 o'clock on a Saturday night only an hour before..."

"A few friends and I got together and had a 7:15 reservation for 5. We were running late and one person down and Opa was quick to accommodate our now 4 person group 15 minutes later very happily. The food was delicious and our service very prompt. We will be back!"

"This wasn't my first time at Opa but it was my friend's first that joined me for lunch. I have learned from my last few visits that if I simply want to eat the best time to do so is for a late lunch, as it gets very noisy and tight in there at night.
We both were on a restaurant week marathon and the menu was good, w/ample portions, for sure. We were started w/a nice light soup that had some fried pita squares for texture. Good start. I opted for the beet salad which was a huge portion; well balanced flavors and textures. We both opted for the lamb gyro as our main course. Slightly uninspired but good flavors and perfectly cooked lamb. The fries, as always, crispy salty soft interior. The lukomades for dessert were awesome."

"It's difficult to respond to the "would I recommend" question. The food was very good (even my son, a chef at one of the city's top restaurants, agreed), but the service was very slow and lackluster. Ambience was good, bolstered by the fact that it was very quiet when we were there. But I can't think of a compelling reason to go back."
