"we were here twice in the last 6 weeks, 1st visit was overall fine to excellent, food, drinks, and service were great, the mahi was cooked nicely and the decor is fun and interesting. This time mahi was overcooked and tough, sent it back and a new piece returned equally tough and overcooked.... we gave up on the mahi and manager let us know he had removed from our bill. Server didn't greet us till 10+ minutes after seating and irritatingly enough didn't bring our initial drink order till we reminded him far after receiving our appetizer and salads, had to hunt him down every time or ask others to get anything else or the bill too."

"Trader Vic's is a rarity in that it is luxurious yet kitsch and quirky. But, the Portland location needs better service. The service is not up to the price point, you expect more from a company with larger resources, from its staff. Also, the tables are way too high, or the chairs or way too low---either way, they don't work together. If you sit down at a restaurant and are already uncomfortable just from the seating, that does not make for a good experience. That said, it is still worth going because it is unique and the atmosphere feels a bit like you are on vacation, and the food is also very good. Even though I question the level of service, it is still acceptable compared to the general lack of good service in Portland."

"This was our first time to Trader Vics (we've wanted to go since it opened). The website seems to imply you need reservations so I easily made them online. We didn't realize they were only for dinner and not happy hour but that was okay since our table was near the open windowed walls and it was nice to enjoy the inside and the outside at the same time. The atmosphere is great--feels like you could be on vacation. We had Mai Tais, appetizers and dessert. The house made cracker/peanut butter is yummy. The Maui waui shrimp and Mango and coconut cheesecake are amazing. It was nice to have a quick anniversary "getaway" while our daughter was at a playdate."

"Vic's is a good tiki-bar type restaurant, but nothing to go too far out of your way for. Drinks were mostly mai tai, and well made; also many other tropical concoctions are available. Server was very friendly, and answered all questions very well. This is a place you will go for a special "theme-type" dinner, but not a regular dining experience. The open air tables near the street were noisy, although the restaurant itself had a moderate noise level. In Portland, it is probably as close to the tropical islands as one can get."

"We were so impressed with the fabulous service at Trader Vic's!
The hostess let us know upon arrival that they knew it was our anniversary from our note on Open Table.
They had arranged for us to have a large private booth, set away from some larger, boisterous groups.
We loved the happy energy of the restaurant and our server brought us an appetizer almost immediately.
Food and cocktails were delicious and we were tickled with the flutes of complimentary champagne.
Great service from our waiter on all fronts.
A wonderful evening! Can't wait to go back!"

"While the location is not on the beach, the decor and food reminded us of Mama's Fish House on Maui. We had three different seafood dishes: Ahi Poke, Mahi Mahi and the Curry special with scallops, clams, shrimp and salmon. All were great!"

"I took my new Fiancé here to celebrate our engagement and since we will have our honeymoon in Hawaii I thought this was a fun find! The food was very good and the service was outstanding, they even brought us complimentary champagne to celebrate once our server heard our exciting news! I will be taking my parents here for their Birthday dinners and will be telling all of my friends."

"The drinks were very good with a wide selection. The crab ragoon starter and salad were a great start to the meal. The beef tenderloin and the beef and reef dinners were good as well. Nothing stood out about the entrees, not excellent but not horrible. Neat atmosphere. Reasonably priced for a place that won't let you down, but won't knock your socks off either."

"We wanted to hit happy hour so we could do a taste through the menu but were told you had to be in the bar for that.
Service was poor, our waiter seemed to be a bit arrogant and just not a great server. We are in the restaurant industry and have been for the past 25 years. The food was amazing, especially the Short Ribs and Cucumber Salad. Everyone liked the food. We will give it another try but probably not bring children. We love to do happy hours so we can get a feel of the menu more."

"Overall the word that best describes Trader Vic's is mediocre.
Arriving at 4:50 p.m. for a 5 p.m. reservation we were seated in the bar as "we don't seat dinner until 5 p.m." Thirty minutes later we were still at the bar until we finally hailed the young lady greeting customers who asked "If we would liek to be deated now?" Strange as it seems she was more intent upon getting menus to patrons in the baar abnd lounge area than dinner cutomers; particularly ones (and we were the only ones) that had a 5 p.m. reservation.
The food and appetizer was fair at best with onions the main ingredient on the beef and shirmp dish my wife had; the wine and wine list lacking (No availible merlot? Really?). The waiter was excellent as was the desert."

"We were a group of 6. When we were first seated it was in a half oval table. We couldn't really talk from one end to the other. Plus, it was too crowded for 6 and right by the bar - very noisy. When we asked if we could have another table, they were very accomodating. They moved us right away to a much better table in the private dining room. The noise level was much better and we were able to talk to each other without yelling. A very positive experience. We would definitely go back."

"while located in the world of fresh dungeness crab - their offerings only included Blue crab from the east coast? Clearly a frozen appetizer that was deep fried. Chicken lettuce wraps were good, but I still prefer PF Changs version better. A long menu of Rum will impress certain friends, but overall was good, but not that impressive."

"We have been here a few times, and I have decided not to return. While my fiance loves the place (I think mostly for the atmosphere which is lovely) I am just not impressed enough with the food. I had the Mahi Mahi, you would think that would be one of their specialties, but it was bland, slightly dry and my finace's creamed spinach was tasteless."

"Fun dinner for four celebrating a Birthday but way too noisy to talk to anyone at the other end of our banquette. We were seated in the bar, I guess. In the next reservation I would request the quietest table, if there is such a thing.

"Service and ambience was great. Drinks were good but pricey. Was not impressed with the food especially for how expensive it was. Really lacking in flavor. Maybe it was an off night, but probably wouldn't go again. Would rather pay the price where I know I can get great food."
