The Golden Ox is Kansas City's oldest steakhouse opened in 1949. The restaurant is a traditional steakhouse offering the finest aged and hand-cut steaks cooked over an open charcoal fire. We also offer great Kansas City style barbecue and a nice selection of seafood and other fare. We are located in the historic Stockyard District and the decorations include a number of photographs from the stockyard days. The restaurant has a distinctive western feel including a carpet containing branding iron and steer head designs and a 20 foot mural in the bar depicting an 1800's cattle drive. Wear your jeans and cowboy hat or business suit when you visit the Golden Ox, the real reason Kansas City is famous for steaks.
"I was not as satisfied as I thought I would be with the brunch. Very small, crowded area right in the front area where others were waiting to even get a table,to try to get our food at the buffet. Could have had two lines going on either side of the buffet, but nobody seemed to be directing/helping to maintain the flow. If trying to go back for seconds, you had to get BACK in line and wait through all the other- Food was just fair- Prime rib, very tough- desserts were almost impossible to get to, as you had to walk around many tables with people trying to eat- Thought they tasted frozen???? Just will not go back there for some time. Could have paid the same price and had alot better ambience, food and service. Thanks for letting me vent.-"

"Great food, Great reputation and history. Lousy location - the stockyards are no more and the West Bottoms are deserted now that Sprint Center has replaced Kemper Arena for concerts and games. Time to load up all the great old photgraphs of the stockyards back in the day and the '51 flood and move the Golden Ox to the P&L, near the Sprint Center so people can find it. Greta steaks, good service and reasonably priced."

"I bring a group of students to a conference in KC. I have tried to make the more formal special meal with the group at Golden Ox. I have yet to be disappointed with that event."

"Last time we ate at the Golden Ox was in Washington, DC and we just loved it. This location was a bit of a disappointment. Decor was nice, but the food was just OK. My Kansas City Strip steak was touch and tasteless and my wifes filet tasted more like smoked spare ribs."

"We went for the Easter Brunch and the selection was vast and the food was very good. Big crowd which made for a little more noise than usual and more crowded conditions for the Tables due to larger groups in attendance. Overall the staff was very attentive and the food was constantly being monitored and refilled as needed. Again, overall a very good experience and the price was very reasonable."

"We had a good time and good food. Naturally steak will be my next meal but for a kid friendly/Easter brunch it was great. Kids liked the Western theme. Our waiter was very friendly and especially nice to the kids. Reservations were right on time. I had asked to be seated close to buffet as I am crippled and it worked well where we sat. Thanks for a great celebration!"

"Great experience. The drinks were especially good. We both had the small filets and they were cooked to perfection. Good side choices from asparagus to various potatoes. If you like shrimp, be sure and get the jumbo shrimp cocktail as an appetizer. The shrimp were exceptional with really good sauce..very tangy. It had been a few years since we had been to the Golden Ox. Both my husband and I remember always visiting as kids. It's still as good as we remember it."

"Reminded me of going out for a good meal in the 60s and 70s. Large portions, great food, warm surroundings and attentive staff. Save room for the cheese cake because it is awesome. I wish they would open new locations that aren't so depressing to go to. It is sad watching that part of town and the KC history slowly die and go away. It's sad to say but it looks like the Golden Ox is headed that way also."

"This place is renowned for great steaks....but they failed to deliver while I was there. We had to ask the busser for crackers and bread that should have been delivered with our salads. My steak was severely overcooked and the do-over was then undercooked. My request for another mixed drink was ignored."

"There was nothing wrong with the restaurant, it is just that it was obvious it was a Kansas City hotspot back in the day, but is no longer. The problem is that their prices reflect what used to be rather than what currently is. My wife and I enjoyed a tasty dinner and had average service, something we could have gotten for a fraction of the price at other restaurants around town. Was disappointed that they had no beer, but they did have wine and cocktails."

"The steak was not nearly as good as I thought it would be considering the cost. I don't think the chef knows what seasoning is as there was no flavor. I had to add salt and pepper myself after the steak came out."

"The Golden Ox was recommended to us by a friend and co-worker who said that this was a great place for steaks. He was right on the money. I had the rib-eye and my wife had the prime rib. Both were excellent! As a matter of fact, my rib-eye was the best one I have ever had in my entire life!!! That is not an exageration at all!!! They handcut all their beef and age it approx. 3 weeks and it is spectacular. We will be back soon. We live two hours away in Emporia, KS, but we will be back as soon as I can break away for another weekend in Kansas City, MO. It was that awesome! Service was excellent too!!! Using the Open Table Reservation system was fast and easy. Our booth was ready even though we were actually 15 minutes early."

"The Golden Ox not only serves amazing food but also has a lot of history to the building. Before becoming a restaurant in 1949, the property was used as a livestock exchange market and many relics of that time decorate the interior. The vibe in the restaurant reflects this and creates an amazing atmosphere to dine in...I'm not trying to sound like a brochure, but the place really was cool. They also have their own parking lot so it's very easy to get there and get in.
My meal consisted of a caesar salad, loaded baked potato, and their signature Kansas City Strip (cooked medium). The food was presented very cleanly and in a timely manner, so zero complaints about service! I did leave upset though, I'll never have a steak that good again!"
