Cafe D'Alsace features chef Philippe Roussel; previously at Chelsea Bar and Bistro and Montparnasse, is originally from Brittany, but he knows something about Alsace serving features such as his tarte flambée (onions and bacon), potée (cabbage soup) and choucroute made with pork or seafood. Also try something off our extravagant beer menu.
"Great food in a romantic setting at reasonable New York prices with duck a l'orange, solid daily specials, French classics and desserts out of this world - who could ask for anything more after a visit to the Met!"

"On recommendation from a stranger we went for the first time- I will definitely go back. I like my tuna medium well, and even though the chef recommends medium rare, my tuna was cooked to perfection. My friend could not choose from the extensive beer list, so went with the waiter's recommendation, and was very happy with the choice. The food was delicious, the service was great, the weather was great for outdoor dining - perfect night! ck"

"The food was good. I had the scallops with grapefruit and saffron rice that was delicious. However, I went with a friend from the Alsacian region in France who said that most of the food wasn't actually Alsacian (only ~5 options were). But not a bad general dining experience!"

"This place is an oasis for anyone who enjoys good down to earth bistro cooking easily found in France but not so easy here. One of the things that I love about this place is the availability of ordering small or large portions Sausages are their specialty... But delicious sturdy French is their mainstay. This place takes its bread and french butter seriously and has a huge selection of beer taken to a gourmet and sommelier level. Recommended-Absolutely Yes"

"One meal does not provide real basis for evaluation. Good for lunch. Food is ok. Service is a bit lackadaisical and irresponsible ... claiming something made with wheat was gluten-free."

"We've eaten here many times and the food, as always, was excellent. The service was friendly, but a bit slow for my taste. However, they squeezed our party of five onto a table for four, despite our reservation, and it was crowded and uncomfortable. Even jammed together, we had to shout at one another to be heard over the noise in the restaurant. So a bit disappointing relative to the many pleasant meals we've had there in the past. My bottom line is that this restaurant is best enjoyed on a night other than Saturday."

"Better than a lot of the restaurants/joints in the neighborhood, but the menu hasn't changed a bit - getting boring. Add something - not a vegetarian friendly place by any means. Waitress was sweet - we waited very long between appetizer and entree - partly b/c chef was 'making the rounds' at the bar? Whatever - they have a huge list of beers and nice wine menu too."

"Bistro style was authentic throughout the restaurant. I thought I was in Alsace France. The mules & frites were outstanding. Gougeres melted in our mouth. My chicken was moist and flavorful and accomapnied with a delectable sauce and potatoes. My husband enjoyed the charcuterie platter with sausages. Noise level was energetic but conversation is possible. Service was very efficient. Upper East side location. Good after visiting the Met."

"Oh how I love thee. This is maybe the most solid restaurant on the Upper East Side. Both their brunch and dinner are fantastic. I just can't get enough of this place. Their beer list is wonderful. Their martinis are great! The lamb burger, pancakes, french onion soup, seaks, and salads are all incredible!!!"

"The food which is a mix of French and German, was delicious and served promptly but not rushed. The feel of the interior is very comfortable yet busy pace, like a French bistro. The pre fixe menu is a great deal and runs all evening. We ate hamburger, escargots, chicken and steak frits and ravioli. With cocktails, bottle of wine for 4 about 200.00. We were very satisfied."

"The food and service were excellent yesterday at lunchtime, but the loud music made it impossible for us to talk and be heard. We asked our server to please turn the music down and she did so in small increments. Finally, the background music was tolerable enough for us to converse.
If playing loud music is the restaurant's policy, management should be directed to an article by Jane E. Brody in today's (3/27/13) NY Times, "What Causes Hearing Loss," which states, "Noise, not age is the leading cause of hearing loss.""

"While the food and service were very good, I would not go back since it was so noisy. It was difficult to hear the conversation at our table even though we were sitting at a table against the wall. That is, there were only people to my left. I would only recommend Alsace to a couple that didn't wish to speak to each other or a person eating alone - it's far too noisy."

"We came here for Valentine’s Day, twice now. Awesome every time. Low key, not stuffy- but they still make it special and gave us some homemade truffles at the end. What's not to love about that?"

"Have been here several times, but unfortunately the noise level has risen considerably as the restaurant has become more popular -- good for them, but I actually like to be able to have a conversation with my dining partners -- not possible when we were there Saturday. And the wine list is a bit strange -- not many bottles under $100. Food is moderately priced, so I don't quite understand the emphasis on very expensive wines. Looking around at other diners, most people were drinking beer or wine by the glass -- do we sense a connection here? Food and service very good, but the total experience a bit lacking -- mostly, it must be said, because of the noise level. We won't be rushing back."

"Cafe D'Alsace is always outstanding. The food is highly under rated and Chef Roussel is very talented. The deserts are a must have every time. The passion fruit souffle is a must if you enjoy a less sweet, slightly tart desert."

"It's a spacious, casual, friendly neighborhood bistro specializing in the classic French-German cuisine of Alsace. The menu is large and the liquor selection includes many beers but also cocktails and wines. While I came for Restaurant Week, I will return to sample other dishes."

"This was such a pleasant experience at the end of a long day. I went with out-of-town visitors who requested French, casual. The wine and beer lists were extensive and my beer-drinking companions were very happy with their choice. The bread basket was perfect, not fussy, but fresh and good quality. The menu was so interesting that we had a difficult time deciding even from the restaurant week menu. There were three of us and we ordered different items, appetizer (soup, scallop, salad), entrees (steak, mushroom ravioli), desserts (tart tatin, molten chocolate cake, homemade ice creams), each was outstanding. The service was excellent. Highly recommended."

"Went here for restaurant week and had the scallop, filet mignon, and molten chocolate cake. Everything was delicious and nicely portioned for a regular menu and especially for restaurant week. Waitresses were knowledgeable about the food and pleasantly attentive. Highly recommend!"
