Entering its third decade, the Dakota has long been a favorite of jazz legends as well as patrons who savor the best of both art forms, the virtuosity of kitchen and bandstand. You can eat in the dining room and enjoy music second-hand from the adjacent club room; but you can also enjoy the music in the intimate club while making selections from either the bar or dining room menu—the best of both worlds. "I can't say enough about the Dakota! My wife and I celebrated our 28th anniversary there and the were blown away! the food was phenomenal and Patty Petersen and the T.C. Jammers were top-notch! The server was exceptional, and the atmosphere was charged with excitement! I would make the drive from Brainerd, Minnesota again for this experience! Thank You for an anniversary celebration we will never forget!

"This is a good place to have good food and listen to some good music at a good value. The 3 course meal pricing that they have is an excellent value. The only slightly off part of the meal was the very acidic mushrooms paired with a coco rubbed elk loin. Otherwise both my wife and I meals were excellent. A recommended must go. Hint arrive after 7pm and asked to be seated in the show room. There is a cover charge, but the performer was worth the up-charge."

"The food was very good, though a bit salty. The problem was that the portions were so tiny, neither me or my boyfriend got filled up, even though we ate a lot of the bread, we still had to eat more when we got home. We are not big people and just eat normally."

"The food was very good as was the service. I received a call from the restaurant before arriving asking if we wanted to change our table to the main area where we could see the show for an additional fee. I was tempted but chose not to move because we had plans after dinner. I wish I had moved as the music was fabulous but we could not see the musicians at our table."

"French Fries with Béarnaise sauce was definitely the highlight of my lunch. Service was good, not stellar. I didn't really enjoy my lunch, I had the special chicken cashew wrap, so I would recommend something else. However, I have been to Dakota for the jazz shows and enjoyed myself. Lunch was mediocre."

"We went here for valentines day and the evening was perfect. Besides a pretty rude host on the phone we had no issues. The food was excellent (this is the first time i can say that before it has been mediocre) and the atmosphere is great (live jazz). We will be back!"

"After several visits to the Dakota over the years, we were looking forward to a special dinner. It was okay, but fell short on a couple of levels. First, the waitress brought our salads before our appetizer; she forgot to order the ap. OK, that can happen. I had an almost inedible dessert--some sort of banana cream pie with an off taste and a cold, solid banana on top that was terrible.On the plus side, my pasta special was beyond superb with the pasta cooked perfectly and the sauce delicious. My husband's fish cakes were spectacular.Some high points but, of course, we always remember the lows...."

"The food was very good, and we enjoyed the more moderate menu choice available. Two members of my party selected from that menu and two used the regular menu. We were seated in the upstairs back room which was very chilly. When we mentioned it to the waiter, he informed us that Target controls the heat or lack thereof for the whole building. We all wore our coats over our shoulders while eating which took away from our enjoyment of the evening. Also, the noise level in this confined space was a bit distracting."

"I remeber the food being supeperb here last time I was there years ago, however, that wasnt the case this time. I went with a group of nine and we all ordered four different entrees the were all ok. It wasnt worth the money... Maybe they got a new chef. Our service wasnt that good either...this happens when their guarenteed a tip I think ( large group) The music was great nontheless."

"Dakota is a great spot, but extremely loud if you are in the stage area. If you are looking for great food in a classy setting, without the loud music then I recommend the dining room adjacent to the stage area. A little quiter, but still a great experience!"

"I went to the Dakota to hear Nachito Herrera and loved him but when I booked the show I was told he would be doing SOME Christmas music. It was pretty mush all Christmas music which was disappointing. I was there to hear a Cuban performer and for a lot of the show it could have been anyone. But he was good, the atmosphere was festive, the food was good and I enjoyed it enough to become a member. The place shouldn't suffer just because I am a scrooge. It isn't cheap - drinks were $8 ea. but again - it is a classy place with lot of overhead - no big shock. I plan on spending a lot of time there - just not a lot of drinking."

"Very disappointing. First of all, the act that night (Allison Scott) was just not Dakota caliber. Other than a few sorta-jazzy (and not ear-splittingly-loud) vocal numbers by just Allison and her synthesizer, the balance of the act consisted of bar-band-caliber covers and some seemingly "original" material designed for the group's clearly frustrated Eddie Van Halen wannabe guitarist to show his lackluster stuff. Yes, we're talking jumping around on the stage like an 80's rocker kind of guitar stuff. Yes, at the Dakota. And my God, was it loud. For 80% of the evening we could not hear the couple across the table from us. Not at all what one would expect at the Dakota. Then there was the food. Mediocre and muddled, not a good night."

"We were there for my wife's birthday. I was looking for a special evening and The Dakota Jazz Club employees were very receptive. I really appreciate a business that works to accommodate their customer's requests. It would have been easy for them to say no nut they didn't and we enjoyed a special birthday night. We will be back in the future!"

"We took our 7 year old daughter along for my birthday and she enjoyed it as much as we did. Her favorite was the noodles and cheese of course - she very much would like to return.

It was a special and memorable evening for both our family and the band. This was a special performance for these aspiring young performers as well."

"The overall experience was good, but dining wise not one that I would make a point to go to just for dinner. However, for dinner and a show I would probably return. We were sat at an extremely small table on the floor near the stage. The plates were entirely too large for the table-no space at all, and entirely too large for the portions on the plate. The tables by the stage feel more like a cafeteria experience than a nice restaurant experience. We made reservations ahead of time and made clear we weren't attending the show so I'm not clear how we got the table we were seated at."

"The service was horrible! 3 hours to eat dinner? That's right: we sat down at 7 PM and finally got out of there at 10 PM.

3 people in our party ordered the "chef's cut." The beef was tough and all three were unhappy.

I would never return to the Dakota and never recommend it to anyone."

"I took a group of 6 to lunch on Friday and the food was fine - nothing to write about - but the service was AWFUL !! We finally had to beg to get softdrinks which finally came - but the water never arrived and after 2 asks - we gave up. Also, bread arrived after 3 people had finished their meals. The server never said he was sorry and bascially acted like were putting him out. We were really disappointed.
They have never been known for their service - but this was ridiculous."

"I went to the Dakota on a Friday night when a live Blues band was playing. This was my second time going to the club. The first time I just stopped in to listen to the music and have a couple drinks. It turned out to be a great time, so that's why I went back. This time I made it a date night, and I made reservations online. Next time I'll call, because I can request seating on the ground level by the band, which I couldn't do online. The services good, my waiter came now and then, so he wouldn't be interupting all the time, but it was a bit hard to get his attention if I when I wanted him. Both mine and my dates 3 course meal was great! Be ready to spend a bit though- $160 for the night, which was about what I expected."

"Service was really slow. We were trying to have a one hour business lunch but the serve time was so slow we were there for an 1 hour 45 minutes. We waited for a drink order (10 minutes before server initially got to the table, another wait to have our order taken and a final wait before finding the server to get the check. I wouldn't recommend Dakota for lunch anymore."

"We hosted a business lunch for 6 here - it was an excellent venue. The food was delicious, the service was great and the noise level was moderate so we could discuss what needed to be covered. The server was great because he knew when to break in for orders, etc. I loved the walleye sliders."
