Bobby Van's Grill - New York Ave.
Bobby Van’s Grill marks the return of the powerful New York City chop shop to the downtown D.C. area but with a new twist. This eclectic New American Steakhouse now boasts a slightly more casual family friendly atmosphere as well as catering to the Washington politician. This 536-seat D.C. destination is fully loaded! There’s four private, intimate and upscale dining rooms with their own bar and bar services. Two 40-foot long bars can be found with friendly bartenders serving strong drinks and even stronger conversations. The main dining room boasts views of both New York Avenue and the plush marble atrium of the adjoining building amidst its beautiful water fountain. This is an ideal place to meet for power lunches, family gatherings and late night dinners in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

"Food was good to excellent- steaks, brussel sprouts and salads stood out. Service was slow. Meal experience was unfortunately marred by an aggressive staff who openly pushed everyone at our table to order more and more, and only the most expensive items. We resisted to what we thought we could consume, but all felt a distinct (and depressing) sense of focus on the size of the bill rather than our meal and experience. Our dinner guests noted the same."

"I've read some so-so reviews of Bobby Van's, but this was my fourth visit and it was as good as the first. The thing that sticks out is how much they continually try to improve the service. I briefly mentioned to my server that I was going to a show after dinner and by the time I'd left, the manager wished me a good time at the show! It was an example of how they communicate and work together to deliver the best service. I'm very pleased with the food (the cajun ribeye is phenomenal) and everything they do. I can't wait to return!"

"Had to make a very last minute reservation for a family group of 5. Was pleasantly surprised by the food and service at this established steakhouse. Comfy booth seating allowed us to be part of the dining room without being overwhelmed by closeness or noise from other diners. Our server (Oscar) was extremely helpful and personable, and a special request was immediately "No problem!" for him. Very pleasant bartender in the bar while we waited for three members of our party to arrive. Portions are very generous, the sides are suitable size to share with 2 or 3 other diners. The beef was excellent! Do take home any leftovers as the filet was just as flavorful the next day (cold even!). Not the place to go if you are pinching pennies."

"The food is very good. They have a nice wine list. The room, although nicely appointed, has some awkward sections. For the price, one should not have to ask for things a second time. It was better the first time I went, but still enjoyable, despite some slight issues."

"We ordered from the Friday/Saturday Pre Fixe Menu, and we were pleasantly impressed. We ordered the fried empanadas, which was tasty with the spicy sauce. My filet mignon was cooked as requested and my husband's seafood pesto fettuccine was excellent. Service was also worth noting. The staff were very friendly and remembered to wish my husband a happy birthday.
Aside from the good food and service, I was a little disappointed when the dessert came around. When I made a reservation through opentable, I requested that they write happy birthday on the dessert plate. I wonder if the restaurant ever sees the special requests. Perhaps, I should have told them in person. I had to apologize to my husband, but we still enjoyed the dessert."

"Food is horrible, filet mignon is chewy, veal chop was tough. salad dressing was super sweet. Tables are poor lit !!! We were very very disappointed !!! They were out of burger & chicken dishes on Saturday night Memorial day weekend, how could that be !! Chose this restaurant at last minute because it's within walking distance from our hotel and other good restaurants were fulled. BIG MISTAKE. Would recommend Brasserie Beck, Cafe du Parc @ Intercontinental Hotel and of course Old Ebbitt Grill. Don't waste your money or your time @ this place."

"We were in from out of town, looking for a place that my Iowan father (meat and potatoes guy) would enjoy for my parents anniversary (that could also readily accommodate a party of 8). We had a great experience! Really nice roasted vegetable platter for my vegetarian mother and a lovely steak and potatoes for my father. I enjoyed the fried chicken while the others in our party had an awesome seafood pasta and cheeseburger. Nice solid variety without going over the top, with good quality ingredients and super service. All the way around, a great experience for a moderate price (relatively speaking!)."

"Splurged on the lamb duo, which was five chops on a plate, nothing duo about it. Specified rare - midrare but they came out midwell; not enough to send back but didn't even break my top five (I order lamb alot), and wasn't worth the price served without any side or accompaniment. My wife ordered the sea bass, exceptional but also just slighly overdone. You can split the sides for 2, the garlic potatoes were creamy and well seasoned, and brussel sprouts were equally delicious with bacon. Waiter was the best part of the evening, very friendly and good recommendations, attentive but not overbearing. Got a nice table in the corner with a window, kept down the noise from all the kids? Select wine bottles half price that night! Dessert was great."

"Food was terrible. Initially ordered Porterhouse for two but waitress came and said they had sold out, it was only 8:00pm on a Saturday. The Ribeye was supposed to be medium rare,the border was char burned and the meat was hard,steak was supposed to be prime. Lobster cocktail was not served out of the shell like it is supposed to and poorly cracked. The waitress tried to rush us several times and forgot to mention the specials at the beginning of the night."

"Bobby Van's is a very nice steak restaurant for semi-casual dining. Great before a show. The service was wonderful but the food lacked the flavor I would have expected. The mashed potatoes were not special and the asparagus was good but not great. The cocktails are quite generous. The steak was good but for the price it's pretty basic food. If you're looking for crowd friendly or a place to take out of town guests that isn't too threatening this is a good choice but I wouldn't go there for a romantic dinner or special occasion."

"I took my mom to Bobby Van's for a Pre Mother's Day dinner and our overall experience was pretty good. I was not happy withthe time of service our server provided and I think he could have been a bit more informative. We noticed that he was not as friendly with us as he was with the table behind us. He was an average server. My mom REALLY enjoyed her food which mad me happy and that was most important to me. I would definately recommend this restaurant to a friend as well as return for dining."

"We were catching up and wanted a lunch that was healthful and convenient. The food choices were good. The presentation was artful. We found the noise level a little high for conversation at times as the dining space is completely open and all talk becomes part of the ambience. Good light. Staff was very pleasant."

"Loved the Pittsburgh-style steaks, as well as our sides. But the noise - yikes! Our server had to shout the specials to us. My husband and I could barely hear each other. The bar was even worse. Although the food was wonderful and our service was fine, the overall experience with the noise level will make us not want to return. This was on a Tueaday night..."

"I booked a table for 8 for what was a team building/social event. The service was just doting enough, with wonderful suggestions for appetizers. All of us enjoyed our entrees, which ranged from the HUGE Ribeye to Chilean Sea Bass. Though it was a Saturday evening, we were never rushed-even though we lingered for 21/2 hours.

"This time we had a server (Gregg) who went out of his way to find out the things we had tried before and base on that helped us to select a couple of things we had not yet tried. It was wonderful, starting with the seafood appetizer through the steak and into desert with the apple tart. This place is one of our favorites and we keep coming back for more."

"Once again we had a great dinner ant Bobby Van's Grill! We were a group of 5 and our 3rd time at this location.
Lucky us we had Lucas as our waiter again, he was outstanding, he always goes the extra mile to make sure we always have everything we need. We will be back!"

"My husband and I enjoyed our meal: Tuna Tartare (excellent) and crab cake (good, but about half filler) for appetizers; sirloin and petite filet mignon steaks (delicious, good sized); home fries as a family-style side (flavorful, but were like chunky mashed potatoes seared on the grill); and creme brulee for dessert (great). Oscar provided good service at the outset, but he was less attentive as his section became more full. He did not pass by for a while at the end, so one of the kitchen staff saw our card on the table and rang up the check. He forgot to bring our card back! I didn't notice until the next morning, so I called the restaurant and they had it. Maybe an honest mistake, but was disappointed not to get a call nor an apology."

"We visited Bobby Van's Grill on a Saturday night, when wine bottles are half off (Fri and Sat evenings). Although the full price of the bottle was unreasonable, at half off it was not a bad restaurant price and the wine itself was very good. I was very pleased with my salmon, but the meat-eater among us was underwhelmed by the steak (and felt there was not much selection for a steakhouse). The crab cake appetizer was too heavy on the mayonnaise, but the combination of good wine and a good entree made up for it. As DC locals eating at this location we also enjoyed the people-watching -- many diners appeared to be tourists."

"It was very loud in there, much louder than we expected. Also, we asked for gluten free and the filet was served with fried onion strings all over the filet, and that was not stated on the menu. The service was a bit slow after we received our meal. The larger filet was served with a bit of gristle on the extra portion, which was a surprise. Overall, it was good, but I'm not likely to return unless I have another Groupon for it. A bit overpriced."

"We eat out all the time and honestly, the service on this evening was some of the best we've ever had - our server was warm, attentive, kind. We have eaten at both locations in DC for Bobby Van's and our last experience at this location was good but not great. So happy that we gave it another try - They got their game back on - food was wonderful, tasty, and interesting, and the service over the top great. Overall, a lovely evening - we will be back soon. "This was our first time visiting Bobby Vans. My husband is a huge steak lover and we've gone to the norm (Ruth Chris, etc). We were pleasantly surprised at the sheer flavor of the Cajun Ribeye. It was nicely seared on the outside but oh so juicy inside...and HUGE!! Our waiter was the best! He walked us through how the ribeye was seasoned, and since it was my husbands birthday, he gave us a very nice birthday dessert of chocolate bundt cake with chocolate sauce and wafers. Everything was great and well worth the price!"

"Had lunch with an old friend today at Bobby Van's, and I have to say it was wonderful - we both had the broiled bacon-wrapped scallops over sauteed spinach and grape tomatoes, and it was luscious! It was not terribly busy at lunchtime, so the ambience was very relaxed, and the service was attentive but not at all invasive. Thelunch menu had a wide variety of sandwiches and entrees to choose from, many of which I would have been interested in had I not been on a diet. Highly recommended!"

"Worst service ever. Had a young kid while dining outside, he handed me my glass of wine rather than place it on the table and moved away so quickly my guests couldn't order smother beverage. No notice of empty beverages on table. When we arrived, we were asked if we had a reservation, however no one asked our name. At one point the manager came outside to assist, thankfully. This kid (who never introduced himself) should not be serving. When all the tables around have chatter about how bad he is, it's a big problem. We won't return anytime soon."

"The food was fantastic! From the mixed greens to the steaks (my wife had a filet with gorgonzola sauce and I had the cajun ribeye) to the desserts, the food was top quality and the preparation was exquisite. Even the coffee was a winner!
Our server, Gregg, was quite professional and helpful in navigating the menu, as this was our first time at this particular restaurant. His consideration and personal attention made us feel very comfortable.
Of course, one look at the menu will tell you that the owners and managers expect you to have a fabulous meal. You will! In this case, you pay for what you get and you get what you pay for."
