Located on the west side across from Central Park and the Museum of Natural History. Tasty Northern Italian specialties and on-site pastry chef's masterpieces. Scaletta Ristorante is a "must eat" for anyone who enjoys fine dining.
"We know when we eat at Scaletta's, that we will have a very good meal in an environment that is "conversation friendly," as we enjoy meeting friends there for dinner."

"We eat at Scalettas all the time - it is our favorite local restaurant. Great food, great service, and they always greet you with a hearty hello and a smile."

"Great attention by service staff, very nice ambience, very small portions of good but not overly impressive meals, fairly expensive probably due to area. Very difficult parking. Garage costs $55.00! Bill had no charge for 2 small bottles of after dinner Proseco. How nice, we thought. Before leaving, the waiter said there was a mistake on the bill and gave us a second bill for $20.00. That's when class went to no class. Probably will not go back."

"Great place for dinner before a 7:00 event at the New York Historical Society. The restaurant was almost empty at 5:30, leisurely service, very tasty food, nice portions. Good selections from the menu supplemented by sevaral seasonal specials. Definitely a repeat before the next lecture or concert."

"So I feel bad saying something negative but the truth is I saw good reviews on open table and figured this would be a staple uws solid Italian spot. Food was actually pretty decent minus the ceaser salad of which came with all of 3 pieces of lettuce for 10 or so bicks. The rest of the meal was pretty good so for food a B but the service, decor and other diners were something else. I felt like I was in a geratric home and we had to ask for the bill FOUR times. For what they can actually improve on (as they can't determine clientele ), the service needs to kick it up (perhaps a manager checking in to see how things are!)"

"The food was great at Scaletta. There were four of us and we each ordered something different- and we were all very pleased. The pasta was cooked perfectly and the sauces had excellent flavor. I had a seafood special and the seafood was very flavorful and fresh. We will go back again."

"Consistently excellent food in a quiet, spacious, well-appointed dining room where no one rushes you out the door. A favorite place for taking out-of-town guests."

"The food at Scaletta is always exceptionally good. The waiters were harried, had too many tables to attend to and left us to fend for ourselves. For a restaurant with such a good Chef, it's a shame that they don't have enough staff and don't train them adequately. It was as though the kitchen staff was put out on the floor for the first time and told to wait tables."

"Very old fashioned - nice space for NYC, and very very convenient to NYHS! HOWEVER - service was abysmal and food was just 'ok'. It seems to have a local 'seniors' following and they can keep it."

"This is one of those wonderful old fashioned family run Italian restaurants that you come across in NYC -- if you're lucky. No surprises on the menu but everything is delicious. We were a party of 6 and there were several other large parties around us but the noise and activity levels were surprisingly reasonable."

"Perfect for groups who want to actually hear each other speak, including an older crowd. Respectful, old-world service, with survivable prices (unlike other area restaurants). Everybody in our group (7) enjoyed their food, which was tasty, hot and fresh. Well-behaved children are welcomed and will feel welcome and at home, but this is no play-yard, Scaletta is for family dining (almost a lost art in NYC). And you know how everyone loves the desert trolley!"

"We did not anticipate that the Restaurant.com certificate did not cover the menu's prix-fix dinner. Nor did we expect that the tip would be pre-determined by the restaurant, not by us as a voluntary gratuity for service."

"6 tables we're filled ok a Friday eve at 8pm. Our waiter refused to pour our bottle of wine when our glasses were empty. It's saving grace was the fresh fish and helpful busboys"

"We go to Scaletta's for excellent food, thoughtful, attentive service, and--best of all--the quiet yet festive atmosphere. I've never had a bad meal here. The pasta is terrific, the Italian classics are done perfectly, and you are never hurried or pestered. My only disappointment was they were out of duck--and I love their duck! It's especially nice for holiday meals--I've had Thanksgivings and Christmases there--plenty of room for all and really good meal options. And if you're tired after an afternoon at the Museum of Natural History, this is the place to sit down, have a nice glass of chianti, and be glad you, unlike the dinosaurs, get to try the veal!"

"Scaletta's is consistently a wonderful restaurant with excellent food and service. It has a varied menu, great desserts. It is also very compfortable, with space between tables and relaxed service that is efficient but not "in your face.""

"We selected the restaurant for its proximity to the museum of Natural History. The service was quite nice, but a bit on the slow side, espesically considering that it was Sunday night and they were not very busy. The food though was very good and we enjoyed our meal. The desert cart appeared to hold quite a few delicious treasures, but unfortunately we had to run. All and all, very positive and relaxing experience."

"Best Northern Italian cuisine in the city. I've been going here with my family for over 20 years and the food and service are consistently excellent. The wait staff are very friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. The pasta dishes are cooked to perfection."

"Wow, that was an awful dinner... It started off with a waiter who acted like he was doing us the biggest favor in the world to take our order. The theme of the night seemed to have been re-heated leftovers. The appetizer, manicotti, was luke warm. Entrees- I had the osso buco, which was tough, and had an extremely bland sauce. My wife had the shrimp scampi, which was also overdone, and had the texture of rubber. Desserts--tiramisu and a white / dark chocolate mousse were beyond sub-par. As mentioned in other reviews, there is a constant rotation of waiters who come to the table, all of whom have clearly never been trained. After paying $150 for dinner, I regret not going to the shake shack across the street."

"I love this restaurant because the tables are far enough apart that you can talk and there isn't music playing. It's good, old-fashioned dining. But last night there were weird screeches of someone singing periodically, apparently from the kitchen. Unnerving. And the last two times I've been there the service has been awful. It makes me wonder if the management has changed or grown senile. It just doesn't seem to be the same, well-ordered place I'm used to. The waiters mumble and take forever. We waited and waited and finally had to flag a waiter to ask about dessert. The wait staff seems to have an agenda that doesn't include careful attention to patrons anymore."

"Even though the restaurant was not at all crowded, service was slow and poor. We had to wait a long time to get menus and then to give our orders. The food was delivered promptly, but we had to ask for cheese for our pasta dishes, which took a while as we could not get any waiters' attention. Biscotti were not brought with our coffee orders, which is customary. I eat here regularly because the food and the ambiance are excellent, but I regret the quality of the service has been declining."

"We enjoyed our dinner at Scaletta. It is an old fashioned dining experience; the food was terrific, the service good, the decor okay. And we did notice that there seemed to be a large group of twenty-somethings headed for the back room; also a large table close to us that seemed to be an entire office of younger folk. My point is, people seem to come to Scaletta for the good cooking & the prices, which is a good recommendation."

"This tucked away restaurant was a good pick. Not pretentious, and very kind service from the servers. The wine list was extensive and pretty good. The food was pretty good as well, nothing particularly memorable, but was not bad. Good experience overall."

"Our waiter ignored us after taking our order and did not respond to our concerns. For example, I wanted very little dressing on my salad; it was drowning in dressing. Our water glasses were empty for a long time and were not filled until we buttonholed the busboy--a few times. The food itself was unremarkable--my chicken was dry, the mousse cake stale. It does have a convenient location and the room is pleasant, but I would not eat there again."

"This was the first time I dined at Scaletta. It is a charming find in the upper westside. They are open for dinner only as i understood . The prix fixed dinner was $38.oo -no wine . We had a main course, shared an appetizer ,and 3 glasses of wine between two persons and the bill came out to $150.00 . I did like the ambiance of the restaurant, food and service."
