Forepaugh's
Forepaugh’s Restaurant is located in a beautiful Victorian mansion in the lovely Irvine Park area of Downtown St. Paul; a stones throw from Excel Energy Center and the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts. The building itself is a gorgeous, multi-functional (read: wifi), state of the art venue disguised as a charming, quaint and thoroughly authentic Victorian mansion. The seven intimate and artfully decorated dining rooms straddle the past and future gracefully, featuring both period décor and brilliantly conceived, cutting edge New American Cuisine. The wine list is expansive and supported by a wine cellar/chef tasting room that is available for small, intimate gatherings. The bar, comfortable and cozy, --featuring the finest in distinctive liquors and specialty drinks. And the service is excellent. Join us for a big night or a cozy romantic dinner. Business groups, rehearsal dinners, wedding receptions and parties of any shape or size are encouraged.

"We had an excellent time at this fabulous location. Overall the foods was good. The only reason I'm giving a lower rating for the food is that the quality for the under 12 y. o. wasn't as good as the one for adults. There is this misconception among restaurateurs that kids only eat chicken nuggets, fries and other things like that (mac and cheese, hamburgers, etc.). Kids enjoy exploring and responding to that curiosity falls onto the parents at home but with restaurateurs at the restaurant. The service was good (though slow at the beginning), very responsive afterwards. The food was fantastic from an adult perspective. The Chef did an excellent job with the Boeuf Wellington, and the quiche was delightful. No doubt we will return!"

"We went to Forepaugh's for our wedding anniversary. The total experience was wonderful. The food was delicious. The I had the walleye and my wife had beef wellington. Both were excellent. The service was great. The manager greeted us with a "happy anniversary," and the wait staff was friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was very relaxed and quiet. Diners are seated in the various rooms of the Victorian era mansion so there is more of an intimate, private feeling to the place, perfect for a romantic evenint. We were intrigued by the Victorian era house and asked if we could have a tour. The manager took the time to show us the entire house from third floor to the wine cellar. We will definitely return for future special occasions."

"We were surprised that there were 4 different cuts of steak (including the beef wellington) on the menu, but each had the exact same preparation; pomme puree, oven-roasted tomato, watercress, Hunan peppercorn sauce. That seems very lazy. The cesear salads were good, but overdressed. However, the highlight of the night was definitely the Truffle Toast - truly original and amazing."

"The food here was just fantastic. My date and I really loved everything we had. Our server was quite attentive. The only downsides are the price (easily $100+/person after drinks) and our server did not seem to know very much about the wine that was available. But I would still recommend this place to anyone looking for a special occasion."

"We LOVED sitting near a real wood-burning fireplace by candlelight as we ate. Our wine (Windham Hill), was a great bargin. Unfortunatly, the food didn't match the exceptional surroundings. The wedge salad was the best part of both meals. It was very good and a wonderful balance of flavors. My beef wellington was rather bland. The asian flavored sauce didn't seem to fit at all. My husband had ribeye steak that was hard to cut and chew. The same sauce accompanied his. The brussels sprouts were underdone and very oniony. I know it's probably not true, but the potatoes tasted suspiciously like flakes. We would go to Forepaughs again because of the wonderful atmosphere, but would probably order much less expensive meals."

"I was not overly impressed with the food. The fries for my poutine were petrified and hard to eat, and the beef Wellington was was over cooked. I won't be returning to this restaurant especially at what it cost is definitely not worth what you get."

"First time at Forepaugh's. Considering it for corporate holiday party. Beautiful venue. came during restaurant week. Disappointed at such small menu and using appetizers as entrees. Others were not happy with that either. food was extremely good. service was wonderful. Might have our party here. all good except for 16 they want us to limit the menu. For such a small group that seems unnecessary. Have asked them to waive that. We'll see what they decide to do."

The best part of the meal was the quinoa salad with roasted pineapple and corn that sat below the beef. The walleye would have been very good, I think if it hadn't been overcooked. We told our waiter who offered to bring us another, but my husband declined as he had already eaten about half the dish when the waiter came by. We were there for restaurant week, so it wasn't as big a deal that the food wasn't good. Based on this experience, I wouldn't go back to pay their regular prices."

"I was impressed with the nice ambiance however the food didn't measure up. I had the Pan Seared Walley and my girlfriend had the Beef Satay. Neither was great. The Samosa's were good and the wine was very good. The very best food items we had were the ceaser salad, bread/butter and banana cream pie. I should have had a clue when the waiter couldn't recommend what the most expensive item on the menu tasted like....Age Rib eye or any of the 21 day aged steaks which is what I really wanted. But if the waiter can't recommend any steak options or hasn't ever eaten it themselves or even can't give a clear recommendation based on popularity I was not venturing there... Overall really enjoyed the atmosphere."

"It's been a while since we have been to Forepaugh's; always remember it as a great place to celebrate special occasions. Sunday night ruined all that - went for restaurant week when a restaurant is trying to attract new patrons. What a disappointment: service was painfully slow, cesar salads were drenched in dressing, one entree was cold and had to be returned (then had a looooong wait for the replacement). Dessert had an unpleasant aftertaste. Hopefully they can return to their former high levels of service; the restaurant is lovely and has a very pleasant ambiance."

"Love the atmosphere of this place but the food was only so-so. In fact my husband's entree came out somewhere between luke warm and cold. We probably should have said something and sent it back. The appetizers and dessert were pretty good but we were both disappointed with our entrees, which for $30 a plate is really unfortunate. We would consider going back for a drink and appetizer considering that the setting is quaint and unique, but I would not go back for a meal again."
