Gotham Bar and Grill
Since first opening its doors in 1984, Gotham Bar and Grill has epitomized New York City dining at its finest, serving Executive Chef Alfred Portale's sublime and refreshingly accessible Contemporary American Cuisine in a dining room that is consistently packed with sophisticated diners from all over the country and the world.
One of the secrets of Gotham's success is that it is an institution that has never become institutional. The unparalleled quality of the food and service are constants, but the rest of the Gotham experience is constantly updated to keep the restaurant feeling as fresh as the day it opened. New menu items are introduced each season, the wine list is always evolving, and the dining room is regularly revamped.
Gotham Bar and Grill has been honored as Most Outstanding Restaurant in the nation by the James Beard Foundation, which named Chef/Owner Alfred Portale Most Outstanding Chef in the nation for 2006.

"I was a Gotham once before and had a wonderful meal. This time, not so good. The service was spectacular. The appetizer was devine. The entrees...a tough steak and flat, tasteless branzino. Not sure where things went wrong. But this was far from stellar. With all the good options out there, I'm not so sure I'll come back."

"I've been here many times. It is a special occasion restaurant and the food is splendid. This time, with all the graduation celebrations, the service was not attentive and quite slow. When we received our $5 cup of American coffee, it was accompanied with low-fat milk not half and half. Petty issues but unusual for a fine restaurant with a 28 score for food from Zagat."

"We went to Gotham Bar and Grill for the second time. This time to celebrate a milestone birthday. We LOVED it. The staff was very courteous and caring. The food, wine, ambiance and everything was divine. We will go again - soon! One of the members of our party has a serious food allergy and the staff was particularly attentive to make sure that our food did not contain any of the food to be avoided. Their attention to detail and understanding of the complexity and seriousness of food allergies was so reassuring."

"I've dined here numerous times, so these are cumulative observations gathered over several visits: Food is excellent, albeit quite rich. Unlike many high-end restaurants, Gotham has a delicate touch with lobster (which is often so drenched in liquor and herbs that it can be unidentifable). It's a large restaurant with a constant din, so one might request a "quiet table" when making a reservation. The window-side tables are especially romantic and quieter (good luck securing one). Seating is a tad tight. The bar area is a bit happening and always packed. Almost everything on the menu is excellent, although entres in particular tend toward the very rich side (ie, forget the second course, or order two appetizers instead)."

"Gotham in a word is consistent. We get to NYC frequently, and this restaurant is always on our must-go list. The experience from beginning to end is a dining pleasure. I can't seem to stay away from the seafood salad, and the miso black cod is a flavorful delight. The sommeliers are extremely knowledgeable and helpful. The wait staff is top notch. Nothing is missing from this eatery. A bit pricey if you're on a budget, but well worth the splurge."

"I had not been here for a few years. Because I live in midtown west, I tend to stay in this neighborhood, or head to the UWS. For convenience, we met here. Lunch could not have been better: great service, great food and great presentation. We had asked for a quiet area; we had business to discuss. "We went to this restaurant to celebrate a birthday. We ordered the tuna tartare, the risotto, the razor clam chowder, the steak, and the cod. Everything was delicious, except for the rice that accompanied the cod. Somehow, they managed to make it mushy and undercooked at the same time. "We chose this restaurant because of good reviews and it was two blocks from the Village Vanguard where we were going later. I expected it to be good but they exceeded my expectations. The service alone is enough reason to be there, the food was creative, perfectly prepared, the wine list was large and varied without being ridiculous, presentation was creative and fun as well. I can't think of enough good things to say about this restaurant! It was moderately expensive but excellent value! I recommend this restaurant to everyone!"

"My friend and I were in NY for a girls bday weekend and had heard great things about Gotham. We were not disappointed! The food was excellent!! It is a little noisy so if your wanting to have a romantic quiet dinner this might not work for you but it didn't bother us at all."
