Restaurant Reviews for Hundred Acres

Hundred Acres

38 MacDougal St.
New York, NY 10012

Located in the heart of Sotho, Hundred Acres offers a welcome respite for guests to enjoy a simple, delicious meal in a casual environment. Chef Marc Meyer, also of New York's Five Points and Cook shop, presents rustic American cuisine, crafted daily based on the market's freshest selections. Whether a salad of market vegetables served in a large wooden bowl or walnut pesto pasta for one, Meyer's menu is reminiscent of being served at a farmhouse table. Equally as affordable as the menu itself, Hundred Acres' wine program and selection of American microbrews, served in 20 oz. bottles, complete the restaurant's accessible nature and sense of community.

Review 3 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I have been here for breakfast or brunch several times. I always get a Creole Bloody Mary to ease my pain and suffering. This last time it tasted completely different and had WAY too much horseradish.

Most of our food was delicious. I ordered the frittata special. It was served in a cast iron pan, which I loved, until I realized it overcooked the bottom half of the frittata beyond enjoyability. I picked out the chorizo and pushed the rest aside. No one bothered to ask why I didn't eat it. I was not upset. My girlfriend was too hungover to eat so I ate her delicious egg scramble, which was cooked to perfection, laden with cheese and spicy roasted poblano chiles.

We will be back despite this hiccup of inconsistency.

Review 5 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"This is a lovely restaurant! Great ambiance, great food and friendly staff made for a perfect night out. We enjoyed trying the different oysters and also the appetizer special - meatballs with a polenta/tomato sauce. Our entrees were delicious (chicken and pork sirloin) and the portion sizes quite generous. The wine list looks amazing and we were happy with our choice. Will definitely go back to try more wines and other menu items."

Review 6 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Hundred Acres is my favorite brunch places in NYC. I go often.
We ordered and waited 35 - 40 minutes for our food.
We didn't complain because we were enjoying each other's company. Our food was delicious!
Before we were done eating...people started trying to clear our plates.
Then a sour faced manager came over and asked if there was anything else she could get us.
I asked for a cup of coffee. She rolled her eyes.
Then they brought the check. We placed our credit card in and as soon as the server brought it back the same sour manager came over and tried to pick it up before we had even had 30 sec. to sign it. She was incredibly rude.

It was their poor service that kept us at the table ( it wasn't busy). I was truly offended by the

Review 8 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 1.0 out of 5 (Poor)
"Overall, very disappointing. While there was a plethora of tables available (we arrived at 5:30 Sunday evening), and I had requested a table NOT near a service station or entry, we were in fact seating at the closest table to the front door and hostess desk ( a total distraction not to speak of which it was drafty) and adjacent to the service station. In my opinion, these areas need to be shielded from the public. The waiter was very 'green' and when my son informed him that he had severe food allergies and asked for a substitution from steak (he can't eat beef) to poultry in their 'mixed grille' and then charged us $4 upcharge to do it!. Would NEVER go back there."

Review 11 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"My dining experience at Hundred Acres was fair. the hostess was a bit rude and brash, and the service was not attentive and seemed to be in a rush to get us seated and get us out.
I felt rushed through my meal and did not have a pleasant experience.

Review 12 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"We were overall pleased with our meal, but the service was sadly unfriendly. The hostess demanded that our entire party be present in order to sit, which in my opinion, doesn't seem necessary if half the dining room is empty. It presented an inconvenience and discomfort because we felt obliged to order drinks at the bar since we were taking up seats that other people who planned on ordering a meal could have been sitting in. I recommend modifying that policy to night/days when the dining room is packed."

Review 15 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Menu was slightly different from the website, Which impacted my vegetarian eating companion (no veg entree) but she was able to get an appetizer as her entree that was a large enough portion to be satisfying. Review 17 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 2.0 out of 5 (Fair)
"The special of the evening was supposed to be succulent pork shoulder. Sadly, I got dried out meat on a plate of runny liquid, with burnt sides. It wasn't busy in the dining room, so the kitchen seemed to be just careless about what they were sending out. The waiter forgot to bring me my glass of wine. The host was under-dressed, wearing just a long sleeved red and white t-shirt with the London Underground logo on it. And the music playing was more suited for a sports bar than a fine dining restaurant."

Review 21 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"The food (steak and mussels for main course; flatbread and watercress/beet salad for appetizer) was good but not exceptional. Service was attentive but not overbearing. The wine selection was limited and left something to be desired. Overall, Hundred Acres is a solid restaurant that makes for a nice evening. Not necessarily impressive enough for a special occasion, but a solid meal and good service make it worthy of a second visit when we are in the area."

"Disappointing. Cocktail was great (Meyer Lemon Sidecar), first course (flatbread & spinach/beet salad), main course per server's suggestion (burger) just okay. Review 24 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Ive been to Hundred Acres 3 times for dinner (never for brunch, though Ive heard its a great brunch spot), and sat in various parts of the restaurant. The atmosphere/vibe is wonderful/comfortable, with a neighborhood feel, but not too cramped. The food is excellent (had the steak with green peppercorn sauce -- cooked perfectly). The only thing they havent had when Ive been there is pinot grigio by the glass, but they've had nice substitues. Overall, I love this place, and recommend it highly to anyone who will listen."

Review 27 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I've been to Hundred Acres about a half dozen times for brunch and we've never been disappointed. Every time we're in NYC we stay in Soho and eat here. We've never had the same meal twice and there are still numerous dishes I'm waiting to try. Their Bloody Mary's are the perfect way to begin the day. The service is always timely, professional and friendly; we never feel as though they're rushing us in an effort to turn a table. I'm happy to say it's my favorite place for brunch in the city."

Review 29 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Met another couple for brunch here. The restaurant was very energetic and noisy. So if you are looking for a quiet place for some deep conversation, this is not the place for you. The good thing is that the restaurant is not cramped as is the case in many NY restaurants so that was a definite plus. However, they sat us near the door and it was FREEZING that day so that made the dining experience somewhat unpleasant. On to the food....my entree was good (poached eggs w/ sausage) but my companions seemed to enjoy their meals more than me (fritatta and special for the day - eggs bennie on a pumpkin pudding bread?). I would be open to coming back here but with so many restaurants in the city why not try a new one every time?"

Review 37 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"If you are looking for a fantastic brunch which is also a departure from the traditional brunch fare, this is the place to go. The artichoke quiche and bread pudding which were specials on the day we visited were absolutely fantastic and hopefully make more regular appearances. The Ricotta roles were surprisingly light. Our 5 year old loved the place."

Review 38 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Not quite as solid as its brethren, Cookshop and Five Points. The flatbread appetizer we ordered was a bit greasy, and the roast pork entree and greens lacked a depth of flavor. The steak dish was much better, and the bread pudding dessert with salted caramel ice cream was quite delicious. Oh, and I'd totally gain a zillion pounds if I had stashes of their very sweet butter at home."

Review 43 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"I cannot say enough good things about this restaurant. Went on a whim for brunch with a friend. The food was outstanding. I asked what teas they had and went with the first one recommended which was a chrysanthemum tea. Amazing! Everything tasted so fresh. The service was impeccable, very attentive but never annoying. The atmosphere was beautiful. I cannot wait to go back with my husband for dinner one night."

Review 44 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"Went for brunch. Egg dishes delicious, esp the poached eggs with goat cheese, spinach, and pumpkin bread pudding--sounds weird but was amazing. Chilaquiles also pretty good. French toast and oak pancakes were ok, but nothing exciting, and I couldn't have eaten a whole dish of them. The warm biscuits to start were delicious. Bellinis/mimosas standard. Make reservations. Largish space, but gets extremely crowded."

Review 45 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"The food here was amazing, starting with the bread with sesame seeds on the crust. The butter was sweetened and the combo was delish. Every appetizer we had was great, as were the entrees. I highly recommend the squid appetizer and pesto pasta entree. The service was far better than need be for a restaurant at this price point, which was shockingly low for the quality of food. Will definitely go back. Don't everyone rush down there. I want to be able to get a table in the future at the same prices!"

Review 47 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"100 Acres is a great restaurant with lovely staff and nice ambiance. Tables were not too close together which was nice for a change. Noise level was bearable/moderate...
Quaint neighborhood restaurant that is located on the quiet end of the west village/soho border... Bartenders were adorable and quite pleasant; no stuffiness at all. Majority of the diners were in their 20s and 30s--at least on the night we dined at 100 Acres.

Review 48 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Generally excellent. Lovely setting. Eclectic lunch/brunch menu will satisfy all. Fish dishes especially well done. A very slight tendency to use a lot of butter (vegetable sides in particular) that might not suit all palates/diets. Truly friendly, knowledgeable staff. Location in storybook non-commercial SoHo neighborhood. Risk-taking: chipotle infused martini -- and why the heck not."

Review 49 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"My daughter and I went here and found it to be a SoHo gem. We had lamb and steak and both of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. The service at the table was pleasant and efficient. It's a very cute atmosphere and not noisy at all. The home made pecan pie was excellent. The meat we has was cooked perfectly and had a good texture and a right amount of seasoning. My meal came with mushrooms and spinich and I ate every drop on the plate which is a very good statement from this frequent yet critical restaurant person. A very nice experience.
The only thing that did not match the overall experience was that the hostess greeting at the four was drippy and not very inviting. When you spend money at a fine restaur I'd like to feel welcomed

Review 50 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"My first dining experience was a mixed bag. For starters, the service was noticeably slow
and slightly inattentive. The wine list, while not standard, was unremarkable. The food itself was a mixed bag. The appetizer, a brussles sprout and cauliflower casserole, was the highlight of our meal. The entrees were quite pedestrian. Indeed, my pork shank was tragically bland. Our bread pudding dessert was quite good, but not enough to erase the memory of the entrees.

Overall, I'd say this restaurant is overpriced for the quality of food and service it delivers. The space is nice, with a European feel. Probably good date/dinner with friends material if no one really cares too much about the food.

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"we were recommended to this restaurant as we love five points, their other rest. we were given a table by the door, little cold, but they were accomodating and moved u s to the garden room which was lovely and warm . i would think nice for brunch or when it its light out. service was eccellent, very accomodating to some deviationu from the menu, i had swordfish which was excellent and a warm mushroom salad as an appetizer. friends also had fish and loved their food, my husband had the same salad and the chicken country style which he also liked very much. they let us taste two different white wines as we were not familiar with either one and settled on a sauvingon blanc. we are not dessert eaters so i couldnt comment on that part of the men"

Review 58 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"I've eaten here enough times over the last year to say that both the food and service are consistently excellent. The bill is reliably under $100 for 2, all included, with a couple of drinks apiece -- it's a great value for the quality. I particularly like coming here during the day, the light is very nice in the front room and we always have had a comfortable table and have never been rushed. The sea food dishes, salads and meat dishes are all really tasty, well sized and have the right balance of unexpected flavors & what one wants from "comfort" food."

Review 68 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Hundred Acres in the West Village is a warm, well designed restaurant with an interesting if limited menu. the food is well prepared and the service is fine. the bar scene is busy and
a little noisy while the two rear rooms are quite lovely. Because the menu is limited there are some exotic choices and several with venison. If you tend to stick to more familiar entrees the choice is limited. Roasted chicken was well prepared as was the tuna. No one at our table tried the venison. Can't comment on the desert. The wine list for whites is quite reasonable.

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"Thank you for a great meal. The mussels and fries were fresh and delicious. The roasted chicken was very tender, and the portion was huge.

Overall the dining experience was a very nice one. The interiors are very nice, suitable for an intimate dinner, with close friends or family. Thank you Hundred Acres. I hope to be back soon.

Review 79 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 4.0 out of 5 (Very Good)
"A friend and I had a wonderful Thanksgiving lunch here. The place is beautiful, with a slightly rustic but cool feel; the tables well-spaced. The service was knolwedgable and attentive but not obtrusive. The kale salad was fabulous; the root vegtable soup, disappointing because it was a broth, not a puree, but still delicious. The turkey was nothing special, and the stuffing was disappointing, but the short ribs were wonderful, as were the brussel sprouts. I found the pumpkin bread pudding disappointing -- mushy, uninteresting -- but my friend loved it. The wine list was helpfully organized, and the waiter knowledgable. I'd definitely go back; I bet the food is even better when not constrained by a holiday pris fixe menu."

Review 80 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 5.0 out of 5 (Outstanding)
"Every part of Hundred Acres was perfect!! Went for a birthday celebration and each of us loved our appetizers and entrees. Also shared the Pumpkin Bread Pudding for dessert, and it was heavenly! The servers were very attentive and informative- didn't even mind repeating the specials twice for our late guest. The atmosphere is incredibly cozy and the decor is beautiful. I dined at Five Points last year for my birthday and loved Hundred Acres just as much as Five Points. Looking forward to trying Cookshop next!"

Review 83 for Hundred Acres

Overall Rating 3.0 out of 5 (Good)
"I went to Hundred Acres three times in quick succession. Each time, I enjoyed my experience. The food is good for brunch (although, admittedly, I prefer eating dinner out versus brunch). I tend to have lunchy-brunch stuff, where I found the soups to be the most interesting. The polenta and feta dish was a bit too fruity for my taste, and I needed an offsetting salty dish. There is no table bread, unless you ask for it, which I think is slightly strange. Also, it would be helpful to have fine sea salt versus coarse, which tends to concentrate the saltiness in one bit instead of having an even saltiness. The service at this place is great - everyone is attentive and friendly."

Special Features: great for brunch, neighborhood gem
