"Five of us ate at Kansaku on a Wed. night. There was a steady flow of traffic but the restaurant was not crowded. We had two finicky eaters with us and the waiter was able to steer them in a direction that satisfied them- they even said they'd go back. Three people had entrees and were very happy with their meals. The other enjoyed their maki.."

"This was our first time to Kansaku and we found it delightful. It's a small and informal place with tables or you can sit at the sushi bar. Service is friendly and attentive. The shrimp tempura with vegetables appetizer was wonderfully delicate and flavorful. We each had maki - the Lake Shore Dr. and Volcano offerings - generous portions and tasty although not as spicy as we expected; the wasabe and ginger gave the welcome kick. The "large" Japanese beers we ordered were huge and we couldn't finish - next time we'll go with small! Full as we were, we ordered creme brulee off the appealing dessert menu only to find out that was no longer being offered, alas. So we went with Japanese tea, feeling more virtuous with that anyway-"

"Dined for lunch, for a very reasonable price, the specials are a bargain. The menu is varied and inventive and the seafood is always excellent, as is the service. This place is the first and only one I consider when a desire for sushi and sashimi hits!"

"Numerous sushi choices and all fresh and delicious. Other entrees reasonably priced, well-flavored and properly cooked. Service attentive. Lovely experience"

"Really nice experience at this establishment. The decor is tastefully done, the service was attentive without being annoying and the food was excellent quality. The only complaint I have is with the amount of mayo/sauce they put on the special rolls - waaaay too much. I tend to usually stay away from these types of rolls for this very reason because all you end up tasting is the may/sauce and not the fish or contents of the roll. Other than that, the cut on the on the nigiri was good and the amount of rice appropriate (though to be honest the rice could use just a little more flavor).
I would recommend this play to others and would certainly go back myself."

"Excellent food. One of my favorite Japanese restaurants in the city. I made the trek from Chicago to Evanston for this restaurant. Great food and service and very vegetarian friendly."

"Great food, good service, the decor is a little woren and the ventilation system needs an upgrade. The food was VERY good and better than many upscale places. The location good especially if have handicapped plate since park right outside the door."

"We usually order the same things every time we go to Kansaku but this time we decided to order some new things. We foind what we ordered a bit spicey and will likely return to our old standbys on our next visit The server was great."

"Kansaku always delivers! We try to make it in every couple of weeks, as their sushi is the best. Brought a couple of newbies in to try it, they'll definitely be back too!"

"Mediocre preprations, such as tasteless gummy coting on soft shell crab, small fish protions on the Maki, overly spiced tuna appetizer that overpowered the tune flavour. Much more expensive that it was worth compared to other area Janpanese restaurants.
No corkage fee offered or BYO allowed, which is a shame for such an aggressively overpriced wine list."

"We asked for brown rice and were told you had to order it a day in advance. Since this was our first visit, how would we know? We ordered tea and were told they were out of tea. I've never heard of a restaurant (especially Japanese) being out of tea. The food we ordered was good, but doubt very much that we'll go back. There are too many other restaurants to choose from."

"This was my first time at this restaurant and because of all of the raving it received from my friends, I decided to try it out. My BF and I went with another couple. The restaurent was not packed at all for an 8pm res on a Sat night. Even with that, the service was painfully slow and we had to attack our waitress everytime she would leave another table to tend to ours. Visually it was very nice and the food was good. Drinks were small( I ordered a vodka based drink and it came in what I would consider a dixie cup). I would def try this place again,.. I'm thinking they were just having an off night."

"I would have liked the presentation of the Dragon Roll to have been a little bit more dramatic. it was really plain. but it was delicious. The spicy chicken dish--chicken was undercooked , but the spicy sauce was tasty, however, not worth $16. I dont think i will be back. plenty of other sushi restaurants in Evanston."

"The food selection, quality and particularly the presentation were outstanding. The Groupon promotion was a nice way for us to find out about the restaurant and to get a better deal on the meal. Although the food was priced as to be expected, the alcoholic drinks (which are not priced on the menu) are quite high priced and can easily set you back if you don't ask or pay attention. The atmosphere is trendy, young and very city-like, but you have to get used to sitting in a row side by side with your fellow diners just inches away and pretend you don't hear each other's conversations. I tend to prefer a little more space and a little more privacy. All that being said, once again, the food was wonderful."

"This is one place we had always wanted to go. Finally, we went and were pretty excited with the ambiance and the crowd. Despite being busy the service was pretty smooth. Its a relatively small place and the tables are crammed together. The person sitting on the other table is much kcloser than the person sitting across your table. Food portion is good size but the quality is mediocre."
