"This is the only place in town I order steaks. Have nto been here in a year, service was fantastic. More vegetables were asked for instead of potatoes. The Prix Fix Menu thre is a $38 and a $48. I chose the $48 with a great Cesear Salad, the 8 oz filet, and we took home, the cheesecake.
The filet was truly medium rare which doesn't happen as oftern as I like. Very soft and tasty meat. Quick service, busy dinding room, but not too noisy. We could have lingered longer, but we didn't have time. J Gilberts does not overbook tables. Best to get a reservation"

"First of all, our entries were delicious and our server was superb (very down to earth, helpful and attentive). We were a group of 4 and each ordered filet "combo" entrees consisting of filet mignon, scallops, and/or crab cakes. The filet was delicious, tender and cooked perfectly. The scallops were excellent and the crab cakes were tasty as well. We are used to the best crab cakes on earth (in our opinion) from the Jersey shore. Nonetheless, the crab cakes at J Gilberts held their ground. The sides (Yukon mashed potatoes and sautéed mushrooms) were excellent as well. The restaurant is quiet, comfortable, and "just enough" casual. A wonderful dining experience overall."

"The atmosphere was just a good placde to sit and have a good time with the wife. The food was wonderful good tasting and presented good on the plate. The service was good and keep coming around asking if we needing anything, keep the water glass ful and all the drinks. Got seat right away and did not have to wait! It was all good"

"As a former server, I was so disappointed in the service that we received on Mother's Day. We had an 11am reservation for lunch.
The timing was horrible, the staff was rude, we had to keep reminding our server that we were supposed to have drinks coming. I would expect this at a lesser quality restaurant, not one were you spend $250+ before tip for 4 adults having lunch on mothers day. After all was said and done we were there two hours. EVERY table around us also complained about a long wait, cold food, etc.
The people we were with love this restaurant and said it had never been as bad as it was, so maybe it was just a horrible off day for their staff."

"This was my first visit to J. Gilberts. I have booked reservations many times over the years for others but never for myself.
My first visit did not disappoint. The steak I had melted in your mouth and was cooked to perfection. The service was great. The evening was to celebrate a special occasion and we did just that. I would highly recommend this restaurant."

"Our shrimp appetizer was absolutely superb. The shrimp were tasty but the sauce and presentation were tremendous. Don't eat your bread until the appetizer comes! Our fish was superb and the one person who had steak loved it. We've been here MANY times and are never disappointed. It's expensive but you get what you pay for."

"You can pay a lot more at some of the main stay steak houses, but J. Gilberts is consistantly THE BEST steak in the city, I challenge anyone put put them up against Herford House, Ruth Chris and the rest, you pay a lot less, get a much more classy atmosphere and a tender, well seasoned, perfectly cooked piece of meat."

"I have never written a review for a restaurant before. Since such satisfaction was achieved, this review became mandatory to spread the good word to others. :-) I took my beautiful date here for her prom, and I couldn't have picked a more suitable place to enjoy an outstanding, romantic meal. The food was scrumptious, the waiter was polite and courteous, and we even thought the lighting was good for setting a romantic mood. Being a broke 18 year old college student, it will make it hard for me to return, but this will surely be the place to take the love of my life for our anniversary! Very satisfied with the overall experience."

"In Overland Park on business, I dined here two nights. The first night was a business dinner, and everyone enjoyed the excellent steaks. The second night, I was alone and went a different direction. The always excellent carpaccio was absent from the menu, which was an initial disappointment. However, I tried the new Burrato and Brasaola. The presentation of this excellent dish included an onion relish flavored with fig jam, the Burrato (Italian cheese made with Mozarella and cream), marinated pears and delicate greens, along with toasted bread. Superb and, I admit, better than the carpaccio. Kudos to whoever crafted this new menu item. The Grouper special, with Cajun Hollandaise was equally superb. The service from Dave was expert!"

"I had heard about it since I moved here. You are greeted at the door with a great smell. They seated us for our 6:00PM reservation right away. The stead was cooked to order perfectly. The service was fantastic and we never felt rushed, even though we saw a line when we left the restuarant. The combo meal with the fillet and scallops was fantastic. My other guest loved the lobster bisque, he practically licked the bowl.

"30 or more visits for my wife and me, and this was the only occasion with poor service. Maybe a trainee, or some other distraction. most certainly forgivable considering the excellent track record for top notch service. This one experience will not stop me from going again and again. By the way will some of you stop ordering the grouper, they were out of it two of the last three times they ran their special. It is occasional on the specials menu, and is the best reason not to order steak. This restaurant has been one of my favorites in the Kansas City area for years."

"After years of having dinner at J. Gilbert's (our romantic evenings out), we didn't have much luck this last time. The steaks were totally different in size (husbands very thick and tender beyond belief, mine was thin, and very tough). It was noticeable at first glance, and by tasting it was evident mine was not the same quality of top sirloin. I doubt we return."

"This is the fourth time we have dined at J. Gilbert's. The steaks are phenomenal, as the service always has been until this visit. Our server paid little attention to us throughout the entirety of the meal. Our drinks were refilled once during a 2 hour meal. We waited 25 minutes between our salads being cleared and our entrees being delivered as we watched tables who had arrived and ordered after us being served, finishing, and leaving.
This will not keep us from dining there again, but we will most definitely request NOT to be placed in server "Scott's" section again."

"I really like this place - it has that great "traditional steakhouse" feel. Great cocktails and our server, Autumn, was so friendly and enthusiastic! We enjoyed the evening, but the food is just not up to par. The blue cheese potato chips were a great starter, but our salmon was overdone and a little fishy. We will try again and hope for better results next time - it may be that this is a beef restaurant and seafood is just not a good choice."

"Brought my 80 something year old parents to J. Gilbert's for Easter brunch, and we tried their prix fixe menu. I was quite impressed with the pleasant and graceful manner in which we were treated throughout the experience. One of my parents struggles to get around.
From the Maitre De to the bus-boy, to our waiter, and the waiters at other tables. All exhibited great patience and care as they waited for my parent to move through the table areas. They even assisted by seated us with a "no stairs" pathway. Our waiter was very attentive, our water glasses never emptied. The food was "top drawer" and prepared exactly as we ordered it. I'd recommend for children of all ages. This is a classy place, the food is carefully and the staff is excellen"

"My wife and I decided to take advantage of a coupon and celebrate our 23rd anniversary here. It is definitely a pricey restaurant, but it was an excellent meal. We both had selections from their Prix Fixe menus, which comes with a choice of salad, entree and desert. 2 different price levels depending on the entree you choose. We both chose combos with a 4oz filet and either a crab cake or scallops. Just wonderful. I had the scallops, and they were simply fantastic, tender and sweet. The filet, though small, was tender and cooked perfectly to my liking (medium). Desert was the most popular chocolate cake for me, creme brulee for my wife, and both were again simply delectable."
