J. Gilbert's is an "upscale casual" steakhouse serving prime-aged beef cooked over a mesquite wood-fired grill. Guests enjoy various cuts of steak, fresh seafood (including award-winning crab cakes) & other house made favorites like the Maytag Blue potato chips & chocolate velvet cake. The cozy atmosphere includes fire side dining, rich wood, brick & soft lighting where you can enjoy dinner for two or host a large party. "Still at the top of the list of our favorite restaurants, Gilbert's delivered a great meal tonight. The crab cakes were perfect, the sautéed spinach was mouthwatering, and the string beans were seasoned beautifully - both sides are great additions to the menu. My husband found his 8 oz. filet cooked perfectly. In fact, he compares every steak he eats anywhere to what J. Gilbert's fare, Few restaurants can match their quality and flavor. Joe, our server, was attentive and good humored, My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our evening there and recommend it to everyone."

"We love Gilbert's!! Our waiter was great, the food never takes to long to come out, and it was wonderful. Because of the cost, we can't always make our nights out to Gilbert's, but it's the one place we do go to celebrate a special occassion. For this time, we came to celebrate my daughter's Confirmation. When we got her dessert it came with a candle, and several of the staff came out to congratulate her :) Was a great ending to a special day for her. Thank you!!!!"

"The Mothers Day meal at J. Gilberts was excellant as alwaysl. The food was cooked as requested and was outstanding. The wait staff was always ready to assist us and explain our menu choices. Although it was crowded, as expected that day, our meal was served quickly and the presentation was great. Ambience is always very nice, and although it was very crowded, the noise level within the retaurant was relatively low."

"Don't misunderstand me, J. Gilbert's is not a cheap or inexpensive place to eat. You can expect to pay $100 for 2 people to eat a full meal, with a drink or two and tip all factored in. However, the food is top notch.
Bottom Line:
They give a solid try with their food, atmosphere and service. Honestly, that is a lot more than many restaurants today can say with confidence. In an American world of mediocre service, food quality and general apathy; J. Gilbert's outperforms any regular chain restaurant. Give them a try and they will not disappoint your taste buds."

"I had the special of the night 2 4 oz medallions. The portion size was good. It came with asparagus and smashed potatoes. The only quibble was that I did not like the sauce that the medallions came with. It was a little too sweet for me. I think I would order something else next time."

"we have been regulars here but on this special occasion it was extremely disappointing. The server was not long engaging. It felt like we were in a cafeteria and food was simply being carried from the kitchen and placed in a table. dessert was brought before we were asked if we wanted coffee. The check was brought before we were asked if we wanted refills for coffee. We noted red carnations being given out to women in the restaurant. My wife was looking forward to getting one. She never got one. on our way out I was going to ask for one. This was a bad experience all around."

"I took my mom for Mother's Day and it was the first visit for both of us. After stepping inside from a bright, sunny day, it was extremely dark and the windows were covered. However, the service and the food were superb. After the meal, we both received red carnations. It was very refreshing to find such a fine restauratnt so close to home. I would recommend it for any special occasion."

"The Steak's are always outstanding at J Gilbert's. It's what they do best. I think they would do well to change the appetizer selections. The crab cakes are good but cheese plate fair and Calamari has improved but if your a real Calamari lover you might not find it to be the best. Salads are done well. Combo of filet and scallops could provide more than 3 very small scallops for the price. Wait Service personnel is always top notch here - they are very engaging and know the menu and wine selections thoroughly. Deserts selections are very good but they seemed to lack a real freshness - out of the freezer type taste - but we dine here often and it's likely that was just do to the volume."

"My husband and I have been going here for 12 years and the we have never had a bad meal. We began bringing our children (10 and 8) about a year ago for special occasions and to introduce them to a more upscale restaurant. I love that their children's menu has salmon and aspargus on it! Kudos for recognizing that children do not need to be limited to chicken nuggets and hot dogs! The atmosphere has a classic/ rustic appeal to it."

"Only issue I had was I asked for a margarita unsalted and I got it salt and my steak the coating got switched with my father's steak. He got the blue cheese and I asked for the truffle buttler (two different cuts of steak). It was not a biggie because we both liked what we got. This is why we didn't tell the server.

"Consistently great food and service! Our server Kelly was professional, had impeccable knowledge of the menu and specials and her presentation to our group made you want to order everything. "It was a great place and the food was good too. If and when you go, leave room for the desert tray that comes around, you'll thank me later. The only part that bugged me was the different servers and they were either, never around at some points or breathing down the back of your neck. I mean it's great for maybe a special occassion, but I wouldn't have chose it for my anniversary again. I miss judged from looking at the menu and the wine list. But I would say if anything, the food was great and worth it."

"Their menu was very comprehensive, extensive and made us want to go back again and again to try everything! I especially liked their section detailing where they purchase their products.

"My friend and I had the most wonderful time! Our server, Steve was simply fantastic- very professional, personable and knowledgable! My friend has a fillet while I had the Ahi Tuna; both were delicious. It is a beautiful restaurant; luxurious yet casual. I'm already planning my next visit!"

"I received the birthday card in the mail and made a reservation. I always get the George Bank scallops and they were particularly fantastic tonight. I do wish there were more shrimp offerings on the menu. I left my glasses there and they called me - that was wonderful, so I was very glad that I had made the reservation with OpenTable."

"This was a pleasure in great dining. We had a lovely evening. The food presentation was excellent. The meals that we had were cooked to perfection. None of the food needed any seasoning. It was perfect. We ate at this particular restaurant since it's inception. Highly recommend."

"What a great restaurant. The food here is top notch. The steaks are some of the best served in the Hartford area. The crab bisque is sinful and a must try. The service was exceptional as usual and in a no rush manner. Dining at J Gilbert’s is truly an exceptional dining experience."

"I have been here several times. Can't help it but I always order the filet mignon & scallops. It's awesome as are the sides. Servers are terrific. I just wish it was located in West Hartford where I live....but that's just me being spoiled with lots of great restaurants. But J. Gilbert's is worth the drive and one of my favorite restaurants."
