"There's a great smell of burning wood when you walk in the door, which promises the down-home comfort of hot, delicious food. Unfortunately that promise was surprisingly unmet.
We came for Mother's Day 2013, and thanks to Open Table, we walked past the crowd at the front door right to our table next to a fireplace. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive, on what must've been a very busy and stressful day. And despite a capacity crowd, it never felt overly noisy.
But we were there for the food. The Eggs Benedict and the Omelette with Grilled Chicken and Peas were surprisingly uninspired and fairly bland. Even the stuffed french toast was nothing special. I'd like to try it for dinner and see if it will be better."

"This was our first time at the Downtowner. It took 20 minutes to see our waitress for the first time, and another 15-20 to get our drink order. Other waitresses were hustling, but not ours. We frequent a steak house down the street, and this waitress wouldn't have a job there. The food was excellent, and the prices are reasonable, but my husband would not go back because of the service."

"Stopped in with business partners before the 2nd Wild playoff game. Had a 7:15 rez. Place was packed, but we got seated very quickly. Waitress was pleasant and attentive. Food was quick and excellent. There were a lot of empty tables by the time we left at 8:15. It was clear to me that this place operates efficiently (without sacrificing service or quality) and understood that most people there need to eat and go quick."

"We love the Downtowner Woodfire Grill. We make reservations as soon as we buy tickets for shows or events at the Excel Energy Center. While there are a lot of options around the Excel, none have the quality of food and service that we get at the Downtowner Woodfire Grill. The service is warm and friendly and never pushy. The food choices are tremendous."

"It's difficult to say what the normal noise level would be because we were there on a prom night and the place was filled with highschoolers in mostly large groups. But we didn't have any trouble hearing each other across the table. I'm not sure about some of the categories above (foodies, bar scene, kid friendly, etc.) as we're not drinkers, there weren't kids there...but our experience was awesome. The food was wonderful, everything came out hot, my steak was cooked to perfection and 'oh-so-tender'! Other dishes at our table were the halibut special, lamb and salmon. Everyone agreed it was delish and presentation and portions were also great! Definitely a come-back-to place. Thank you!"

"Needed a classy place to take my Bishop, Vocations Director and 5 other seminarian brothers. The Bishop was in town from Green Bay so we needed a nice place, superb food for less than $35, classy environment without white tablecloths, and in downtown St. Paul without $10 an hour parking and a hidden location that takes a half hour just to find. And this place delivered. It was the first time I ever went there and a gamble since the Bishop and all my brothers were counting on me to come through with the right choice. It was perfect.
I went on a Monday Night at 5:45 and there was very few people there, servers waiting to wait on you and the special was a delicous Lamb shank with plenty of Mashpotatoes, also superb, for $20. I suggest!"

"On a busy event night, we experienced excellent service, food and ambiance. Although tables were full, we were served promptly and had an enjoyable time with friends. Staff was friendly and helpful. The lamb special was moist and delicious. Desserts were small, well presented, and fantastic. Can't wait to go back for more."

"Food and service were both excellent. This is a great choice to go if you want to visit with friends. It is quiet enough to have good conversation without straining to hear. The service was attentive but not intrusive and we did not feel rushed to order or rushed to leave once we had finished eating. Menu is varied -something for everyone. At our table orders included pizza, pasta and kabobs. Everyone was happy. In my opinion the grilled shrimp here can't be beat."

"Our server really knew the menu and was very descriptive. There was a chopped salad that I thought I wanted until she told me in detail what it was like and I opted for the tuna nicoise instead. The tuna was seasoned and cooked perfectly. She also voluntarily brought more dressing after noticing there was hardly any on the salad. My husband had the salmon and although it was well seasoned, it was over cooked. The kabobs are always great as is the basamati rice and if you like lamb, it is wonderful here."

"The place was PACKED, when we arrived ten minutes late for our reservation prior to a Wild game. However, we were instantly greeted in a super friendly manner by the guy in a suit at the host stand. We apologized for being late for our reservation and he smiled and told us no apology was necessary and they were holding our table for us. A nice young woman was then directed to take us to our table.
We had barely sat down when a helper greeted us and poured us water. It was only minutes later when our waitress arrived to take our drink order. Being on a tight time line we decided to forego appetizers and ordered a couple items from the recommended Persian section of the menu. We found the included salads to be pretty average, not bad"

"We hadn't been to Woodfire for a while. I had forgotten how good it is. There is something for everyone here, from my 84 year old mother-in-law to my low carb requirements. It is lively but you can still hear everyone at your table. Just a great place."

"Went to the Downtowner Woodfire Grill for the first time on the night that I purposed to my girlfriend. I randomly picked the restaurant for that special night and I am so glad I did! I was only expecting a good meal and a nice atmosphere, but the staff went above and beyond when they saw or heard what was going on. I did not expect them to make that night anymore special than it already was, but they certainly did! Perfect atmosphere! Excellent food! and a awesome staff! Thanks for making it a night to remember, we will defiantly be back!"

"We planned to attend a hockey game and eat prior. We had been told by a friend that our parking expense could be applied to our meal so we wanted to give it a try. When we arrived, we discovered that we parked in the incorrect lot. We made a reservation and upon arrival were seated after three other groups without reservation. We were seated and ordered drinks. We waited several minutes to order afterward. Given the average menu and somewhat spendy pricing, we elected to eat at the event instead."

"We had a dinner reservation for 6:15. We arrived 15 minutes early but were told that we would have to wait until closer to our time to be seated. It seemed odd to us because there were SEVERAL tables open at that time, but we were early so just went along with it. After standing there for 55 minutes and watching countless parties being seated...we were finally brought to our table at 6:40. Once seated we waited, and waited, until our server finally showed up to take our drink order. We received our drinks (2 glasses of wine) 15 minutes later. We were never asked if we would like another glass of wine or a refill on our water. As for the meal ( we had the kabobs) it was ok but certainly didn't make up for the serious lack of service."

"Definitely great food and the wait staff was pretty good, but the bar was very backed up. It was a concert night so they just seemed a little understaffed at the bar. We had a considerable wait for our bar drinks each time we ordered a round and then ended up with the wrong order but we were okay with it."
