Honu Seafood and Pizza
Chef Mark and Judy Ellman have opened a seafood shack, right next door to Mala Ocean Tavern. Honu Seafood and Pizza also sits right on the rocks of the Pacific Ocean, with 50 beers, an organic and eclectic wine list, and an extensive scotch and rum selection. Mark and Judy have created an environment that soothes the savage beasts craving of oysters on the half shell, steamed clams and mussels, Crab Louis salad, a selection of Hawaiian seafood, as well as fish from the West and East Coasts of the US. Honu also features a 900 degree brick-oven turning out artisinal pizzas. Come to Honu, drink a local Micro-brewed beer ,eat some freshly shucked oysters on the half shell, and let your eyes and soul relax into the Pacific. Honu, like Mala, is run by Mark and Judy Ellman and their two daughters Ariana and Michelle. Remember, we always try and practice Aloha. Please come and practice with us.

"Don't let the dumpy exterior disuade you from steppingnin! The interior is beautiful! From the friendly hostesses to the excellent waitstaff, this place was very welcoming. The local ingredient inspired menu is obviously chef driven, not typical tourist fare. My dore fish special was cooked perfectly. The barely seared ahi appetizer though is what shouldn't be missed. Our waitress recommended it and it was memorable. The seasoned ahi was served on a crispy flax with heirloom tomatoes and micro greens. Fabulous! My son had their pizza which had an excellent crust that tasted like they have a pizza oven. The view is spectacular as the restaurant is beach side."

"Awesome fresh pizza but I wanted to try everyone else's food around me too. We went at sunset and we had a seat right by the open window, since the restaurant was right on the beach the view was amazing! 10/10 experience."

"The first thing you notice is that Honu has very welcoming staff, from the hostess to the bartenders to your server - particularly our server Shellsea, who remembered us and which cocktails we ordered the previous time we visited. Servers in Maui see a LOT of tourists, so we don't know how she does it. The waterside setting is lovely and the food is excellent. This is a group that works together as a team, and really cares about your experience."

"It's not often a beachside view restaurant also has great food, outstanding cocktails, and very personal service, but Honu is exceptional. Each time we go, we are impressed by the well-trained staff and the inventive but satisfying dishes. We hope they NEVER take the Lamb Riblets off the menu!"

"It was Memorial Day, a busy time with a lot of large parties. The usual four-top tables were recombined to seat them. Sadly, that left a two-top a few feet from the bar and steps from the kitchen. We were told it was the only table available or we could wait 20 min for a better one. We accepted it but soon found it uncomfortable with the wait staff traffic around us. We noticed better tables being cleared and asked to be moved. We were told others were ahead of us waiting for them. The "game" seems to be to make a reservation, then upon arriving at the restaurant get on a waiting list for an acceptable table. We took our dinner to go and departed. This is not the experience that we expect when we have a reservation and show up on time."

"We enjoyed a great dinner here at Honu. The oyster cocktail was delicious and they were generous for the price. They have a good selection of dishes. I had the spicy korean chicken with pancake and that was very good. One of my favorite entrees from our week on Maui. They also have some good unique cocktails. The Honu refresher was my favorite."

"We had a wonderful dinner last night at Honu. We each had a salad and then shared the Ahi entree, which I have to say was the best I have ever had. We will defiantly will go back and try some of their unique dishes and the wonderful desert offerings."

"If you want to sit near the water at sunset, make you reservations for 5:30 or earlier and sit there until sunset. Also, this a very casual place. We sat next to a couple with 2 toddlers. The cocktails are good, and I've heard the clam chowder is the best ever."

"This was the first dinner of our honeymoon and Honu didn’t disappoint. Beautiful outdoor space tight on the water. We had a table literally ten feet from water edge. Several turtles were popping their heads up throughout dinner. Food was very tasty with very fresh seafood options. Had oyster shooters, local tuna tatami, poke, beet salad and the fresh fish Dore style. I can't remember the name of the fish - maybe mah chun? The bartender staff was attentive and friendly, particularly the bartender and manager. Thank you for a wonderful experience!"

"Usually I would not order pizza on vacation...always looking for something new and different. But the shrimp & jalapeno pizza called our name and we were not disapponted! "i wanted to try this restaurant because the gluten free pizza got great reviews (unfortunately I have to be gluten free) and it was right on the water. It's on Front St in Lahaina but pretty far from the main strip where all of the shops are. I actually found this to be a plus as I was able to pull into their small parking lot and get a space easily on a Friday night. We were greeted and seated quickly at a table outside with a beautiful view. I had the gluten free pizza and it was fantastic. My mom loved the burger too. Service was great and drinks were also very good. I felt like there were a lot of locals there which I liked as I felt like it gave even more credibility to the restaurant."

"As locals, we love Honu and it's neighbor Mala. Mark and Judy are masters at food making and Honu doesn't disappoint. I learned to love oysters on the half shell at Honu and you have to have an oyster shooter! They use local ingredients in their own way and I don't think we've ever had a bad meal or experience here. Cucumber Breeze is my favorite cocktail here and there aren't any bad food choices. You have to try!"

"One of our favorites on the Island. In the past we have had delicious crab prepared With Malaysian sauce and the whole fish special. Both superb. Recently we enjoyed Seared ahi coated with sesame seeds on a spinach salad drizzled w/ bacon vinaigrette dressing and brown rice. The fish was translucent-cooked to perfection. We also enjoyed the Osso bucco served with mashed potatoes and a mix of fresh vegetables. Again, cooked to perfection with a delicious reduced sauce . For starters, we enjoyed a beet salad, fantastic lamb riblets along with the 'must have' ahi bruschetta . Local beers were the perfect beverage to go with our feast. Service excellent! And what's not to like about dining ocean front with a slight breeze on a warm night?"

"I have dined several times at Honu since it originally opened. The food is always excellent, professionally served. The servers are professiional and stable. Always I am welcomed warmly by the hostess(es) and the people on the floor. The view from most tables is breathtaking and even though the restaurant constantly busy I never feel rushed when dining. I have been able to recommend Honu to many vistors as I am in the retail business. Whatever meal I selected is always at the proper temperature and beautifully presented. Seafood dishes are a specialty and always fresh. I have been there for special occasions, with groups of people and shared a wonderful romantic interlude. Top dining and a warming experience. Thank you Honu."

"We enjoyed our dinner - the food, the ambiance, the service all were wonderful. The menu is varied and their is something for everyone. The ahi bruschetta are fabulous. You really have a view of the water from all of the tables. We will return the next time we are in Maui."

"Had a wonderful lunch outside overlooking the water. Even saw a few turtles! I had the bay shrimp sandwich which came in some delicious toasted bread, and with lots of fries and sweet potato fries, and cole slaw. Husband had the fish and chips--also yummy. Service was attentive without being annoying. A bit pricey, but this is Maui. I don't mind paying the higher prices if the food is good, and this was great! Parking is a bit difficult, but there is a small lot to the left of the restaurant. Mala is right next door, and also very good."

"We loved this place so much that we ate there 3 out of 8 nights on Maui.
The food is excellent with a very interesting menu filled with lots of
choices. Service was wonderful and the view.....beyond words other than to
say "spectacular" sunsets. Ask for an ocean front table on the patio. It's worth the
wait at the very friendly bar. This is a restaurant not to be missed in Lahaina, Maui."

"Bartenders were very nice and enjoyablel, the Mojito is outstanding. View is incredible, worth the wait for an ocean-front table.
Food was great, the Octopus and burrata appetizers were very well done and the Pizza was excellent. The crust had great flavor and texture and the toppings were well done also. This is up there with some of the best new Italian hotspots in LA.
Unfortunately, however, our server was terrible. She seemed only concerned with shuffling is in and out as fast as possible. We noticed the same attitude in the hostess as well, when she notified us at the bar that our table was ready she practically grabbed my drink out of my hand, she wanted us to sit down ASAP! I could barely even close my bar tab."

"What makes Honu special is the brick oven pizza and the view. Get the right seat and you can practically be sitting just a couple feet away from the water. We had both the pizza and crab-mac and cheese. The crab-mac and cheese was good but the pizza was the best part of the meal. The combination of the food and view are what earned the 4 star rating."

"Enjoyed a wonderful lunch at this little gem of a place! I had the fresh Ipswich Fried Clam Sandwich. I come from New England, so I am picky about seafood! The clams were tender with whole bellies and accompanied by a huge mound of regular & sweet potato fries! YUMMY!! The view was amazing with our table right on the wall separating the restaurant and stone shore. The staff was friendly and attentive. We particularly enjoyed a server named, Alex. He took our picture and told us about the surrounding area and when the turtles visit the neighboring beach. A wonderful afternoon!!"

"Honu is our favorite place to go for lunch or dinner on the Westside. We take friends and family there and the food is always delicious. The kale salad for me - the Fish and Chips for my husband (of course). The Dori style fish and a salad is great to share with a girlfriend. Honu is not only a wonderful location - it can be a special lunch and special dinner place. The food is extraordinary and you are always taken care of with professional service and warmth. I have gone there many times with my husband and recently enjoyed a dinner out with a girlfriend and we had a delightful time for dinner."

"Read about this restaurant in a local guide. The outside appearance does not reflect the food, service or the sunset views. Went here during our visit to Maui on our 10th anniversary and requested a table with a view - arrived an hour earlier than our reservation but were immediately seated at an oceanside table for two. Waitress, although young, was informed and provided great suggestions. Would highly recommend."

In our Opinion, WAY, WAY out of line...
Pizza was very good, but NOT $19 good. The fish was $42!!!, Fish an chips was $34. Wines by the glass were ridiculous (one chardonnay for $17 !!!).
We would go back, but ONLY to split a pizza and beer. The pricing on the entrees and wine was ridiculous. There are many many places in Maui with as nice (or better) views and much more reasonable prices..."

"Honu was a great departure from the over-the-top decadence that we experienced at other restaurants. We were looking for something simple, but still having creativity. We kept this meal very simple...fried oysters to start and pizza for dinner. Pizzas were the daily special(shrimp and artichoke and pepperoni). Fried oysters were the best we have ever had, and the pizzas were just what we were looking for. Ohh yeah...the beer selection was very good as well."
