Aviary
Located in the Alberta Arts district of Northeast Portland, Aviary combines industrial design with local art, reclaimed wood from the original site, and locally crafted lighting. With a chef's counter, communal table and a seasonal patio.
Three co-chefs, Sarah Pliner, Jasper Shen, and Kat Whitehead, collaborate on an eclectic menu of small plates inspired by France and Asia.
Leah Moorhead's wine list draws from boutique wineries in France and the Pacific Northwest with a cocktail list with seasonal infusions.

"Aviary's food did not disappoint--it definitely deserves its place among Portland's finest foodie destinations. The skate wing was so tender, it practically melted! Also, that butter emulsion they serve with the bread is so amazing, it will almost put you off regular butter knowing what butter could become in the hands of Aviary chefs. Our only complaint was that we practically had to tackle a waiter in order to get service--we sat for over 15 min with nothing but menus before our drink order was taken, and not much effort was made toward apologizing. We sort-of got the (unfortunately east-side typical), "you are lucky we allow you to eat here" hipster vibe from the wait staff...honestly, though, we will definitely return."

"Innovative doesn't even begin to describe the menu at Aviary! Circuses are hip and mode, the service attentive but the real reason to dine here is the food! Toques off to the chef and her team in the kitchen!! Our visit coincided with June dining month, 2 options were offered. The chilled zucchini soup is a blend of spring flavors, skate as the main course was very good, rounding off with a petite cheesecake fresh regional strawberries and dotes of lemon curd."

"We went for June dinning month and had the sat menu. I had the skate wing which was very good, succulent and flavorful. My husband had the rib which was super fatty and salty, he couldn't eat it. We had the salmon app which had a generous chunk of salmon. We tried both deserts and they were forgettable. Luckily we sat outside because the cement floors and walls plus the music on too loud make for a noisy experience. The service was outstanding, top notch."

"The gravlax appetizer and skate main course were of excellent quality with delicious and imaginative sauces and condiments.
The chocolate terrine was out of this world. I am often disappointed with desserts, especially chocolate. This was the exception. It was fantastic. The service was very good and they were particularly conscious of pacing for a relaxed meal."

"Love their butter/anchovy sauce for dipping bread! Went for Portland dining month--the smoked salmon appetizer was delicious and a very generous portion! "We gave it a try and ordered half of the items on the menu. Portions were small. Tempura beans were soggy and the curry sauce was overpowering. The pork belly was not cooked properly.Fat of well cooked pork belly should be jelly-like.This fat was fat and the meat part was stringy.Crispy pig ears were inconsistent,some were stale, some were soggy, some are hard to chew and the coconut rice was watery and has an overall greasy texture. The NY strip steak was ok but the dish was luke warm.Why the bean sprouts on top?? Bean sprouts are considered cheap food in Asia, it is used as filler in egg rolls or in inexpensive noodle soup. Putting bean sprout on a nice piece of steak did not make any sense. Overall, the food lack balance and focus."

"The concierge at our downtown hotel recommended Aviary. It was an easy drive out to Alberta, which is a pleasant place to wander about. (Beware of Apple Maps which directed us to N rather than NE Alberta St). The most mainstream menu item we had (tempura green beans with green curry) was the least impressive--the beans were a bit pulpy and the sauce lacked punch. The waitress recommended the butternut squash charlotte. I thought it was great--creative and flavorful with wonderfully fresh vegetables. We also had braised goat--excellent. Based on other reviews, we ordered the chicken skin salad. The greens and watermelon offset the crispy/chewy deep fried skin. Memorable. Over all, the menu is more mainstream than it appears at first glance."

"Aviary has an electic menu for discerning palates. The wait staff were knowledgable and enthusiastic. Portions are moderate and fairly pricey. The skate was excellent, the goat a little overcooked, and the butternut squash Charlotte was ambitious but ultimately a little disappointing. Ambiance was noisy and felt somewhat sterile. Plain tables and an austere modern decor. The bar looked more fun than the dining area."

"French cooking with a spin--innovative and inventive variations. Beautiful presentations. Good explanations of content by waiter. Most favorite were cold smoked salmon, braised goat, and skate. "We tried much of the menu. Most of the small plates were good, oysters on horseradish ice very good, green beans, chicken skin salad- good. , fluke crudo was nice and the most interesting of the small plate. Of the large plates we split the crispy pig between the three of us. Had to fight for every bite, melted in your mouth. best dish of the night. We each had a large dish. The state was ordered medium rare, but came medium, however it was a good dish and a quality steak. The goat was dry dry dry, really should not of been served. The skate had strong ammonia taste, just this side as bad. We should of sent both back but did not want to mood of the evening. Wine list well priced, creative menu, small tap list but well selected and priced."

"I dropped off flowers to be placed on the table and the staff were so accommodating. The green beans were awesome as always the smoked salmon was outstanding. The pomegranates with the goat was a great combination. The monkfish was super tasty. My girlfriend really liked the liver."

"Aviary got a lot of hype, too much. It's a great restaurant for the area but the media attention had me expecting great things. The ambience is forgettable. The bar tender and his specialty drinks are really outstanding. A tremendous amount of effort goes into each dish but none of the dishes had our party proclaiming we'd come back for that dish. I would not put Aviary in my top ten or maybe twenty restaurants in Portland."

"The savory for was great, good delicious flavors combined that you might not be used to. Dessert on the other hand was disappointing. The panna cotta was set in a martini glass and was fairly boring. The cheesecake tasted okay but was nothing special, especially when compared to the savory courses. "liked that there was outdoor seating but front did not feel inviting, w/ metal chairs, etc. wished we had arrived earlier to sit at back tables near outdoor garden area.
biggest/perhaps only complaint: all 3 in my party disliked the music, loud modern jazz or r&b?! too loud; didn't seem to fit ambiance of the space or style of food at all. just awkward.
each and ever single sip of beer/cocktail and bite of food/dessert was yummy good to downright delicious. portions did seems rather small but we took it as an opportunity to order/try/enjoy large number of items; also perfectly full in the end, did not go home hungry or stuffed! food creative and fun. lasting flavors in dishes, desserts pleasantly rich. braised beef w/gnocchi my favor"

"While we were dining at Aviary on a busy Saturday evening, we were seated in the room just off of the bar and we were able to carry on conversation while we ate most delicious small plates including oysters, fish, butternut squash,tuna tart Char, and three wonderful deserts. "A number of us went because of the WW Best Restaurant review last fall. While not hard-core foodies, we seek new things. Tried much of the menu (including the Pig's Ear dish).
Overall it was good; certain dishes, like the goat and the eggplant, very good. Overall, seemed to us more head than heart. Things were nicely conceived and plated, but never drop-your-fork delicious. The room was, in aesthetic effect, cool; chairs didn't invite lingering. The wait staff (two servers) were o.k., but also had an almost distracted air. Maybe this place will evolve (and offer a few more veggie/vegan options if possible). Hope so: there's a lot of skill in the kitchen."

"I really adored eating here. I got three of the dishes -- japanese eggplant, oxtail croquettes, and the four cup chicken -- but what really stood out for me was the amazing stout cake I had for dessert. The service was impeccable, neither standoffish nor too fawning, and as I was sitting at the kitchen bar, I occasionally got to interact with one of the soux-chefs, which was nice. The food was beautifully prepared and had interesting mixes of flavors, and it felt like a unique experience to me without being pretentious."

"Not as advertised. We went here based on the reviews but made the mistake of not checking the menu before making a reservation. Open Table lists Avuary as French cuisine! This place is anything but French. I'd compare it to an overpriced Smallwares but nit as good. We struggled to choose even 2 small plates...everything else looked unappetizing and as if the chef was trying too hard. Save your money and avoid thus place."

"Some of the most inventive and delicious food in Portland. On par with Le Pigeon and the other "fit for foodie" meals, and quite a bit gentler on my wallet than other such places. And, despite it's reputation as a "small-plate" style, both me and my dining partner left quite full. Check out their desserts. The wine list was solid and well-priced, though not otherwise notable.

"Lots of small plates and bites to enjoy. The oxtail croquette special had a wonderful richness to it and the cauliflower terrine was a great compliment. The combinations were unusual and each bite had something you might not have imagined which made it really enjoyable, lot of delicious flavors. We shared 5 plates and were stuffed. The wine menu has some very reasonable prices on it too. The cocktail list looked really interesting as did the happy hour, so we will be back to check that out."

"Space doesn't really allow me to gush as much as I want to over how delicious this meal was, and I really wish I could. I had three of the small plates (and am glad I read reviews about how and what to order, so I wouldn't be disappointed). From the japanese eggplant to the oxtail croquettes to the four-cup chicken, the meal was exquisite and the service was absolutely a delight. (Tip: Go early and on a weekday, if you can) The highlight of the meal though was the stout cake, which may have been the best dessert I've ever had. The ambiance is whimsical and not as overstated as the stereotypical "put a bird on it" theme would make it seem. I also recommend you try one of the cocktails, if you can. My Opera Sidecar was fantastic."

"This was by far the best meal I've eaten in Portland in 2013. Everything that crossed our table and palates was extraordinary, beginning with the lovely bagna cauda and crusty olive bread and ending with the exquisite blood orange and pink peppercorn ice cream. To describe the service...well, let it suffice to say that when we were greeted at the table, I actually thought that the gentleman was friends with my dining partner by how we were greeted.
