"Although we've had some good visits, a recent Saturday night was our last. Despite reservations, we were seated in a covered patio adjacent to main dining room, where the ambiance was poor and noise levels were high.
Service was bad. It took over 10 minutes before our waiter showed up to say he'd be with us in just a moment. The waiter's assistant tried to clear my appetizer plate when I was clearly not done, and failed to replace my wife's fork when her main dish arrived.
Food: Bruschetta was served on soggy bread Beet salad was tasteless. Two regional pasta dishes were boring. Almond torte for desert was good.
If you visit, insist on main dining room seating, order off the main menu, and avoid crowded times, e.g. Saturday nights."

"Pasta is always good and very fresh. Olive bread is my favorite. Patio is lovely and has a nice romantic feel; however, you cannot sit too long in those chairs. The food, wine, service is always great. This is our Valentine's spot. Unfortunately, the service was really slow. Our waitress was very nice and funny I think was a bit overwhelmed on the patio and was counting on the help of the bus boys who really didn't help her. But we will be back!"

"This restaurant, among others, was recommended to me by locals. I was looking for Italian so, I chose Il Fornaio. The service was the top plus. The food was their Puglia special. It was a nice way to make an engaged meal for a single diner. Possibly a little pricey for the fair, but well worth the effort."

"Slow and unattentive server - (It was a busy day - Mother's Day) We had to remind our sever that we had not received bread Food was delivered - slow and not all of it was hot Ordered a steak (I know ..It's an Itallian cuisine and not known for steak, but by daughter insisted) The steak was a 34 dollar porterhouse that was simply "Not Good". (Good sides though) My wife's pasta dish was however the best dish. My Mother and sister's dishes were less than impressive as well. Spent 200 dollars on a very disappointing dinner.
Not impressed - Probably won't return."

"can never understand why they walk you through entire space to give you the worst table in a restaurant that is 2/3 empty..next to butlers service table...we refused it..walked back to a proper table for 2. waitress was nice...food was very average..compared to il fornaio in carmel, it did not compare. restaurant is attractive and should have better food."

"My friend and I had a really nice dining experience. Our server, Samantha, was not only very professional and courteous, but she was charming as well! The food, as usual at Il Fornaio, was excellent. I had the pasta in a vodka cream sauce with bacon. Just mentioning it makes me hungry again. Sigh."

"This is one of our favorite restaurants but tonight the food was not good at all. If this was the first time eating here I don't believe we would come back. It appears the chef had a bad night in the kitchen. We will return and hopefully the food will be excellent as it has been in the past."

"As frequent diners in downtown Sacto this has got to be the best restaurant for service, attention to detail, prompt service, and tasteful Food. Thanks for a great evening. Other "hip" downtown restaurants can learn from "the baker"."

"Every time we visit Il Fornaio, it is exquisite. The ambiance is beautiful, the food is top notch, and the service is impeccable. They have a respectable offering of wines, and are always changing up their special offerings in addition to a sterling regular menu. If there's someone you want to impress, take them to Il Fornaio. This last visit we took our vacationing relatives in for dinner, and everything went off without a hitch. For the same amount it would have cost to have the same meal at Olive Garden, we ate a much higher quality, more satisfying meal, and left feeling as if we'd been treated like royalty. Every time we leave asking ourselves what the secret is, and why other places can't just follow Il Fornaio's example."

"Three of us dined at the restaurant on a weekday evening. First course was a caprese salad ...the mozarella cheese that topped the tomatoes was rather firm and without a notable dressing. A flatbread appetizer was extremely average. Very little topping that slid off with the first bite leaving you with a tasteless piece of flatbread.
A pasta course consisted of linguine with fish. The dish was so disappointing. An ample amount of fish but the sauce could have been any commercial variety you purchase in a jar. The canneloni were acceptable but not near as good as our homemade dish. The best dish of the three was the veal scallopini. It was an enjoyable entree.
The wine selection is great."

"We go to Il Fornaio regularly but it will be a while before we go back: something's wrong in the kitchen! The so-called fava bean soup was terrible, apparently left over form the day (week?) before. There was only one (1) fava bean in the cup, the asparagus had been cooked to a mush and the whole mess was flavorless. The Caesar salad was nearly as bad: dry dry dry--I'm not sure there was any dressing at all. I complained politely about both itms to the waiter but he seemed helpless--and hapless--about what to do. The charges for both appeared on the bill. To top it all off, the veal scallopini, usually a standard, was drowned in lemon juice. The restaurant must be having management problems--let them try to work them out in six months."

"We attended for Easter Brunch so not very indicative of the normal menu, it was buffet style, even though their website said prix fixe menu. Notably bad considering the high price, lack of selection, and poor presentation. Meat was tough, salad consisted of chopped lettuce, desserts were presented in a poor fashion, foods looked unappealing, stations were messy, understocked, everything lacked seasoning and the same two pastas tasked differently when the chaffing dish was restocked. I would not reconsider going for a buffet again, that's of course if they actually advertised a buffet instead of lying and saying it was a prix fixe.
A la carte next time, and not for special occasions!"

"A wonderful meal on a very quiet Sunday evening. Waiter was not overly attentive and left the 4 of us to enjoy our conversation and meal. He was there when he needed to be. The food was excellent, I am not a connoisseur so cannot pass critical judgement, however the seafood dish was fantastic as was the chicken. The sauces are outstanding and of course made the meal what it was."

"I was a little disappointed with the Conchiglie al Pollo. It was just ok. This dish included just a few pieces of chicken which was a little dry & lacked flavor & a few small pieces of broccoli; it was mostly pasta shells. I expected better from Il Fornaio. My husband had the Pollo Toscano & said it was good. We were very happy with our server (sorry, didn't get her name); she was very pleasant & accommodating. We also enjoyed the hot bread & were also pleased that the menu items were not overly priced."

"Very spotty. We had drinks and appetizers in the lounge prior to dinner. The drinks, calamari, and pizza were excellent. Service was a bit slow. Dinner was a mixed bag. Two of us ordered the leg of lamb entree. It was overcooked and tasted like it had been soaked in brine. The ravioli were excellent as was the bean soup. The bruschetta was a joke. The other two in the party ordered the swordfish which was excellent. The lamb was returned to the kitchen. We received a full credit for two meals. This is the first time I have experienced a sub-par meal at the restaurant. I will still return, but most often for lunch, not dinner."

"Il Fornaio is a downtown favorite that is consistent with excellent food and service, and a great atmosphere. The Wells Fargo Building (the resturaunt is located on the first floor) has an interesting display of CA gold history, including a very old WF Stagecoach. Great photo op. Parking is validated in the ajoining garage, which is a bonus for downtown. It's one of our family's favorite!"

"Valentine Day is suppose to be special for you and your loved one. Do not order the duck.mIt was this huge dry brontosaurus dry and tasteless meat on my plate. I could not eat it. I took it home and through it in the garbage. Waisted night. Not happy at all. We usually enjoy the food but this kind of ruined it for me. I don't know if we will ever return."

"Let's do this BACKWARDS! Overall experience-OUTSTANDING!!! When was the last time you rated a server as "totally cool"? Emily was engaging and unpretentious. Four thumbs up!!!
The tiramisu did take a little longer than expected. Wife-lamb, me-duck...surprised to get what seemed like half a quacker!!! Both picture worthy, but..after sharing (shhhh), her lamb was much more exciting (taste-wise) than the duck. It (the duck) was soft and easy to cut off the bone, but was tasteless. The smaller-portioned lamb just had a lot more taste than the duck.
Wine was well matched. Great atmosphere. Emily is our server. First time here."

"The first time I visited IL Fornaio was on my 17th wedding anniversary. I called to make a reservation and spoke with the manager. I mentioned it was our anniversary and when we showed up for our dinner we were treated like royalty. We were seated at a special table with a black table cloth (real Italians will know what this means). The service was impeccable as was the food. My wife and I have eaten there on many occasions since that evening. My favorite is:
Cappellacci di Zucca Ravioli filled with butternut squash and walnuts served with tomato sauce, brown butter, Parmigiano and crispy sage
We decided to hold my mother in-laws 90th birthday in their banquet room. She is a hard woman to please and could not find one complaint."

"The service was pretty good, though we had to wave down the server to let her know that she had forgotten to take my husband's drink order. I was really looking forward to the bread, but I found the three varieties that we were offered to be just awful. The tables were quite cramped together--not sure if it was because of Valentines Day. I would have liked to order a side salad, but I was surprised that there was no side salad option on the menu. I ordered the cannoli. All in all the flavor was okay, but I did not enjoy the crisp, undercooked bits of onion in it. More sauce would have been nice as well. For dessert I shared the sampler with my husband. We both enjoyed it and had no complaints. The Tira Misu was especially good."

"Delicious food and an amazing setting! The architecture was beautiful. The service was great overall, but we did have to wait a bit to be seated despite having a reservation (it was Valentine's day and very busy). Our waiter was very attentive and friendly and we did not feel at all rushed. Overall, I would definitely recommend Il Fornaio for anyone who loves Italian and a nice, romantic setting."
