Socarrat Paella Bar's ambiance denotes feelings of warmth, comfort and hospitality. A neighborhood staple with a small, intimate space comprised

"It's a great place to go on a date or bring someone from out of town. It feels special without it being large and pretentious. The Paella is always delicious, but don't skimp on the tapas -- shrimp, octopus and dates are my favorite."

"The food was a bit overpriced, especially considering the small portions. Fairly bland and straight-forward. Much of the seating is at crowded tables and sitting on tall stools, so not a very relaxed place to eat."

"The place was very lively for a Monday evening. Our waiter was very friendly and helpful with his recommendations. The Tapas were pretty good, The Fried artichoke and scallops wrapped in bacon in a pomegranate sauce were especially good. I was somewhat disappointed in our main course, Lobster Paella, it was the special for the night. I found the lobster a little overcooked and tough and the rice was moist on top and crunchy burnt on the bottom of the pan. Not what I had expected in a Paella.I might go back and try another Paella dish but they all seemed a bit pricey for a 2 person Paella

"Food was delicious but the portions for your $ was not great. I had made a reservation a week ahead of time for Mother's Day and when we got there, on time, they sat us at the bar which was I unhappy about. The reason I made a reservation was because I didn't want to have to sit at the bar, especially for a special occasion. They waiter we had was pleasant but just okay when it came to our questions about the menu. The best thing about the place was the special, Lobster Paella, but still overpriced. The waiter said that we could only order paella to serve people in numbers of 2, 4, etc... but when I point to the party next to us and their paella and asked what size that was he said "3"."

"The best paella, but we already know that having dined at Socarrat before. This time we had the duck-chicken-chorizo paella which was fantastic. We also had a half-dozen tapas that were wonderful -- as was the Sangria. Can't wait to get back to Socarrat to try yet another paella."

"I've been here several times and loved it. Maybe it was an off night? The food took forever to come out to the table, and when it finally did it wasn't warm. The server probably forgot about us while he was huddled and engrossed in his conversation with all the other wait staff."

"My boyfriend and I came here for our anniversary dinner. We requested a corner table--something a bit more intimate and less in the center of things--which the restaurant happily accommodated. The tapas we ordered (fried artichoke and braised pork belly)were out of this world. We went off the beaten paella path with the arroz negros (it's soaked in squid ink), so the dish tasted a bit fishier than paella usually does. We loved it! We definitely want to come back some time to try the other items on the menu.
Please do yourselves a favor and don't skip dessert. You'll be dreaming about their chocolate beignets for DAYS. The restaurant gave us two glasses of dessert wine on the house, which was lovely of them and much appreciated :)"

"I am often in New York on business and I had been to Socarrat a few times before. Socarrat was recommended by a friend who lives in New York, as the place to get the best paella in New York, and I agree!
It is a great place to go if you are dining alone or with a small group because of the communal table seating. The tapas portion starters, are not only delicious, but a nice way to enjoy a variety of flavours before the main paella meal.
Socarrat manages to be consistently good every time I go there. I can confidently bring my clients and colleagues there without worry about the food and service."

"As they say beauty is in the eyes of the behold. A friend of mine recommended this place of paella. I found this restaurant a joke. First of all there is no chairs but stools. The stuff is rude, classless, impolite..unfriendly to say the least.The portions are away too small and very pricey. I sat on the bar and had the croquets, what a joke! The squid tough as a leather.I advise anyone to avoid this place. Don't waste your time and money. Go some place else. I guess this place days are numbered."

"My husband and I had a late night dinner with another couple last year and had a wonderful meal. Everything tasted fresh and cooked perfectly. This time we had an early dinner with our two young sons and were very disappointed. We ordered several tapas and, except for the papas bravas,, everything was overlooked. Also, I had to send back my margarita to cut the lime juice as it was basically a glass of pure lime juice with a dash of tequila. Overall, a big letdown for this foodie family."

"Great food the paella was perfect especially the so carat at the bottom make sure you have them scrape it for you. It is a little tight so understand that going in and the seats don't have backs to them. You are placed at the long paella table with other people but was no problem. Great date spot highly recommend."

"As good a restaurant as there is in NYC. The service is impeccable, the tapas are amazing, and they are just setting you up for the paella. The Socarrat or "second scraping" makes it feel like you're eating two unique dishes. Very impressive and delicious. I travel to NY often and I recommend this place to everyone. "I'm from London and find it hard not to compare good food establishments but I think Socarrat is possibly one of the best tapas places I've been to outside of Spain. Amazing Paella and I thought I would be taking home a doggy bag end of night but no, it was too delicious and I ploughed on through with a friend who was equally delighted by the food. We had amazing wine, the service charming and the atmosphere relaxed. will be going back for more."

"A dissapointment for any individual who knows and recognizes what Catalan cuisine is supposed to be. Appetizers where well presented and of acceptable quality. However; the paella was unacceptable by any description. A horror experience with seafood improperly cooked and tossed on top of the rice? Who ever came up with this version needs to take a quick trip to Barcelona and get a new recipe. The black paella and the signature socarrat paella needs complete improvement. Nice ambiance but the food was not enough for a return!"

"Didn't realize that we would be sitting on high stools at a bar because the other Socarrat restaurants have tables. There was not enough room for our party of three to have two paella dishes, water glasses and wine glasses. Unfortunately one wine glass toppled over and went all over everything. But I must say that the food was very delicious. The paella was terrific. Next time we will choose Soccarat in Nolita or the upper East side. Would recommend this location for the very fine tappas on small plates and wine."

"this was my 3rd time visiting this location of socarrat. every other time, i've had a great experience, but this time, the kitchen realized they had lost our order over an hour after we ordered and we had to wait more than 2.5 hours for our food. by the time it came, we were so hungry, there was no time for the rice to get crispy. they gave us a free dessert, but it wasn't enough to make up for the awful service."

"We sat down at 6pm order a few tapas and two Socarrat paellas. The first tapas dish was great but twenty minutes passed before the second one came out. The waiter disappeared and we patiently waited. Finally it arrived. 30 more minutes passed until our entrees came out. When they arrived they were noticeably burnt. The waiter disappeared and we couldn't flag anyone down. After 20 minutes of trying to scrape burnt rice from the dish and eating around the mussels and charred shrimp we had a busboy take out food back. We wanted to quickly leave and go get food elsewhere but the waiter who now returned to the dining room seemed to be embarrassed and avoiding us. Finally we paid and left. Horrible experience."

Fried Artichokes - taste and texture, truly a wonderful experience for the palate and tongue! The Spicy Chorizo - nice / mild heat factor with a smokey finish and the Braised Pork Belly was smoothe and buttery.
The White Sangria was refreshing and paired well w/the Socarrate Paella; our wonderful host / waiter, Mikel was informative, spot-on with his recommendations and we are most appreciative of his "above and beyond" attentiveness!
Suggestion - in addition to reservations (busy-busy venu),the chocolate/citrus filled Beignets paired with the sparkling Muscat, nice way to finish a most delectable and memorable dining experience."

"These people can make a good paella -- not too dry, not to watery, just perfect. Fun to share with a group. Wish they had chairs with backs as it is a meal to sit over,relax around and sitting up on a bar stool works against that. But...still worth the visit, again and again."

"the appetizers were tasty but very small; the seafood paella was good but not sensational. Hard to tell what kind of fish was in it - no lobster. Among all the paella choices, it didn't not have the traditional paella which is a mix of chicken, chorizos and seafood (mariscos not pescados). The barstool height tables were small and hard to fit a paella pan if anything else was ordered and the stools themselves with no backs were quite uncomfortable. nice selection of moderately priced Spanish wines. Given the choices we hve to get very good or excellent paella elsewhere, I probably will not return."

"The paella is out of this world as well as everyone of the appetizers but the stuffed squid is a MUST! The service was on top of everything with making sure the food came out hot and perfectly timed as well as making sure to describe each dish to us. The wine list is extent and filled with some very notable choices and the desserts...well they too were not to be missed especially the churros! I will be back for more :-)"

"I always enjoy visiting this small, very cozy restaurant. Three of us shared the fish and seafood paella. The taste was not overly fishy (which I had feared) and the seafood was not overcooked. Both bar and restaurant servers are knowledgeable, and the service is very good. I would recommend this restaurant for both lunch and dinner to anyone who likes paella."

"Socarrat is a great place for paella. The place is small but has a nice dark ambience. When we got there they first wanted to seat us in very close quarters to some singles. We asked for our own table in the back and they obliged. The pork belly and grilled shrimp were nice tapas to start with. We ordered a carafe of red sangria and thought it was small, but we didn't finish it so I guess it wasn't so small. We ordered the lobster special paella and found it to be perfect with not too much rice. I would definitely recommend this joint."

"Technically I would say 3.5 stars. The food was very good but I was not that impressed with the tapas menu selections - very traditional choices. We stuck to the daily tapas specials for more variety and of course tried the paella which is deservedly very good. Wine list is ok but its reasonably priced, all under 100. I would go again or try downtown or uptown locations. Seating is communal with shared table tips. The place is bigger than pics suggest with a long dining table in one room and tables and full bar in another. Active bar scene too."

I went with a couple that had been before and another couple from out of town who had never been; both gave me props at the end for picking Socarrat because the meal hit the spot.
