Tucked away atop Nob Hill, Venticello Ristorante, is one San Francisco’s best kept secrets. With quaint tables, a wood burning oven and views of the bay, Venticello provides a warm intimate atmosphere that is reminiscent of a Tuscan Farmhouse. Recognized as one of the most romantic restaurants in San Francisco, we are located just a few blocks away from the historical Mark Hopkins and Fairmont Hotels, as well as walking distance from the Huntington Hotel, The Stanford Court, and the Ritz- Carlton Hotel. As you walk into Venticello, you will enter our upstairs area. "Wonderful salmon with polenta and creamly leek sauce. Salmon and polenta were both perfect. Cocktail was perfectly cold and perfectly blended. Walked out and was able to catch the cable car to the hotel. Couldn't ask for a better experience."

"My wife and I dined at Venticello before heading out to a concert. It indeed is a nice romantic spot with great food. We sat at the window and decided it was too drafty and moved toward the oven where we settled comfortably. The soup was perfect for the cold evening. The dessert was okay but not authentic. Perhaps this restaurant should emphasize the locally grown foods more?"

"Lovely venue, though extremely noisy on the weekday we dined there. Not easy to converse easily without shouting.
Menu attractive; the special seafood ravioli pasta was my choice, and I asked for less of the cream sauce.
I was surprised to discover that with a smaller amount of sauce, the raviolis themselves were fairly dry and not so tasty at all,
with a meager amount of crab in them. For a "special pasta" of the day, I had expected differently."

"Consistently fabulous. As an amateur chef and having attended several cooking schools I have become a bit of a critic. But there is nothing but positive feedback for this restaurant. The menu changes frequently enough for a nice variety and every dish that we had was perfectly prepared, nicely presented and the quality ingredients were evident. The host along with the rest of the staff was engaged in the dining experience. 5 stars."

"One of the best italian dinners I have ever had. I have just returned from a month in Tuscany in the fall and this brought back all the memories of sumptuous dining. We NEVER order the appetizer, salad, pasta AND the entree. However, here we could not help ourselves and we were not disappointed. Excellent choice for an excellent meal."

"Small venue with closely spaced tables. The only negative is there is no real room to wait for a table inside the restaurant. The bar area seats only 4 and was occupied during our visit. Best to make reservations and to show up at that time.

The main courses of our dinners were very good...in particular, my wife had the veal scallopine which included a flamed sambucca and basil cream sauce...outstanding! I had the ahi tuna, which while good, was a bit over-cooked and did not come as advertised, but included a very good polenta. Salads and deserts were average."

"My party of five liked the décor and lighting of Venticello but the food was not as good as we expected. The highlight of my meal was the portobello and polenta appetizer which was very good but all of our entrees were disappointing. The chef appears to have a heavy hand when it comes to sauces: the mushroom sauce with the gnocchi was too thick and clawing; the carbonara sauce was overly spiced; the sauce with the veal scallopini was too rich; and the tomato sauce with the goat cheese ravioli completely masked the taste of the raviolis. I doubt that I will go back."

"Though the gnocchi was a bit rich (and a tad gummy), the tenderloin of lamb was delicious and the lobster bisque (a special that night) was superb. The setting is also lovely, on a corner on Nob Hill where the cable cars pass by. Always ask for a table in the downstairs section."

"We waited 20 minutes until someone noticed that we had not been served any liquor-the busboy was very attentive and brought us water and bread but the waiters completely ignored us. "I was traveling and my brother found this restaurant through Zagat's originally and have been there three times in the last few years. It has been conistently great food and good service. Hard to have a conversation when it's full because the tables are so close but worth it.My mopther had a hard time with the stairs but there a few tables in the bar area where you dont have to go down the stairs. Had the mushroom and arrugala pizzette and salmon over polenta. My mouth is watering just thinking about the taste. Fabulous meal."

"I am only sad that I didn't know about Venticello sooner. I've lived here for almost 6 years and have been missing out on great food and atmosphere. The bartender and wait staff were so nice. The bartender I guess was called in last minute to work and she could not have been more happy about working on a sunday night. It's clear everyone enjoys working there and no wonder why. It's a great cozy and quiet but enjoyable atmosphere. The best pork medallions and polenta I've ever had. I am just going to look forward to my next visit!"

"This was not my first time at the restaurant and I have to say it was better before. The veal saltimbocca was tough and had a strange after taste. The gnocchi was very good as was the petrale sole and cured meats but the service [ considering we were dining at 5:30 p.m. and they were not at all busy] was lacking. We had to ask for things that were needed, flag down a waitress etc., because they were standing around talking to each other. Not sure I would eturn."

"We were ignored when we arrived. The p[hone rang and that was more important. Finally after 5-6 minutes we were acknpwledged and shown to a table, it was about 3 inches from a loud party of six, after requestion a quiet out of the way tabl\e for a romantic evening. At least the flowers we had sent ahead were on the table. The wine was nice, service was so so. Lots of reaching across. I sent my dinner back. It was not good. We left soon after. Would not return there are just too many great spots. It's too bad cuz the decor was really warm and friendly."

"I went on a limb and chose a restaurant that we hadn't been to for our anniversary (we live in the East Bay, but get into the city fairly regularly). The ambience of the restaurant was romantic, but the close tables and 'energetic' noise made it difficult to have any moments private from the diners next to us. The food was really enjoyable, though the waiter brought us the wrong salad (probably because he wasn't paying attention to my husband as he was ordering). The Nob Hill location is also a plus and was very close to the Mark Hopkins Intercontinental where we stayed for the night. I would go again, but have open eyes to the pros and cons of our first experience."

"Venticello offers a taste of Italy - both in its delicious food and in gracious service. The warm, intimate atmosphere embues a rustic elegance. Italian wine selections are not too overwhelming in number, but quality definitely wins over quanity here. The staff is always knowledgeable about what blends to pair with your meal, and very accomodating. The Veal Scallopine is divine - likely one of the best dishes in San Francisco. Add to that, the trolleys rolling by in front of this quaint restaurant in Nob Hill, you get the sense of being on vacation in San Francisco - tucked away in this little gem of a restaurant that could easily be adjacent to Rome's Spanish Steps, without the crowds, of course."

"I would tell anybody who eats there the food and wine list are great and you can even have a conversation without loosing your voice. Just don't get put off by the maitre d'. We nearly turned back as we felt terribly unwelcome. We were under the impression that if you don't live in the neighborhood or had an "in" you might be sent to purgatory. We did not have the faintest idea our table was ready and to follow the gentleman because he did not even look at us as or said a word to us. He did not even notice we were not following him and ended up talking to himself before he realized we were still upstairs waiting to be seated. Once you get over that coolness, enjoy your meal."

"As always, excellent food. The waiter got my order wrong; I ordered the pork medallions (wonderful!) and he brought veal. Normally, I would have eaten whatever he brought, but I don't care for veal, so I sent it back. Naturally, I had to wait for my food while my guest ate her meal, however, the staff more than made up for the mistake - I was served a tasty portobello mushroom appetizer and we were treated to a shared dessert of tiramisu. Both were delicious. We were concerned about getting a cab to the ballet after dinner, but the staff made sure we had one waiting. The restaurant is elegant yet comfortable, the food and service are first rate. Dinner at Venticello makes a visit to the City memorable."

"We go to San Francisco quite often and are always trying new restaurants. I must say that Venticello was one of our best discoveries in a long time. We shared four courses and were very happy with every portion. The waitress was very attentive without being obvious. I will certainly return for another dining experience."

"We chose this restaurant because it was close to a concert venue. It was perfect. We felt as though we were back in Florence! We only wish we could have spent more time there. We were late for our reservation because of traffic on the Bay Bridge. As a result, we only had time for appetizers, salads and wine. Each dish was excellent. We'll be back!"

"Fabulous food! We would definitely return. The only down-side was the noise. It was so loud that you could barely talk. Perhaps this was because it is the holiday season and more people are dining out in large groups. We plan to go back to Venticello--just hope that it is quieter next time."

"I'd dined here some years ago and enjoyed it. However, this visit, taking friends who were staying on Nob Hill, so the location was convenient, I was EMBARRASSED! The food was mediocre, at best. As we sat down, my friends said, "It's difficult to get a bad meal in SF, right?" Wrong. And the service, by a harried waiter, was no more than functional. A very disappointing eveing."
