The Palm Court
Tea has been a long tradition at the Drake Hotel,.The Palm Court began serving Tea during the holiday season of 1982 and dignitaries the likes of the late Princess of Wales, Princess Diana, Hilary Clinton have sipped and supped here since. In 1958, Queen Elizabeth joined us for tea at the Drake.
The uniqueness of the beauty of the room centers around a gorgeous limestone fountain with a giant urn as its center motif dating 275 years old, this French bronze by designer David Williams. Most importantly, the ambiance of this afternoon affair is greatly enhanced by the live harp music performed 365 days a year by our musicians dressed in classical evening gown attire.

"The Palm Court is allegedly THE place for afternoon tea, but I found the sandwiches dry and unexciting and the breads including the all-important scone completely ordinary. The ambience was nice but the surrounding conversation volume was fairly high such that the harpist was difficult to hear. I expected better food for the price and the reputation. I've had much better experiences at tea at other nearby hotels."

"even though we arrived a few minutes late, we were able to be sat quickly. our server was very attentive and informative...we had never been to the Palm Court or tea before. It was a special treat for my mom. she even said everything was much nicer than she expected. the extra goodies and express services from Mario Tricoci were a fun surprise. She loved that she got a red rose. The cream puffs plated as swans were so cute, she even got two extra to bring home to my dad to show off! Valet parking made it easy to drive in to the city. A bit expensive for tea, $38 but a special treat to be sure."

"We went for tea anticipating the same wonderful experience we had there several years ago. It was most disappointing. The food was mediocre -- sandwich fillings sparse, the dessert pastries extremely small in size and somewhat lacking in flavor. The harpist, who was advertised as playing from 3 to 5 p.m. packed up and left at 4:30.
All in all not worth the effort or the price."

"I keep coming back to The Drake for tea. The food was good & plentiful, the tea was great & our waitress Christine was phenomenal. We love the fountain & live harpist. Our party of 5 loved it. The only negative thing is (only one) is that the building needs to be updated to accommodate handicapped people. We had one person in our party that was in a wheel chair & she was told at the entrance that she had to wait to get escorted to The Palm Court by security. Half our party was already seated and she waited by the front door for 20 minutes to be escorted because she couldn't get up the stairs. I called prior to our outing and was told The Palm Court was handicap accessible. They really need to fix that. Other than that, we had a great time."

"What a lovely way to spend a Sunday! Tea at the Palm Court is the ultimate girls get together. Our group of 5 had a wonderful experience. My 7 year old daughter was in awe. We will definitely do this again."

"The Palm Court in the Drake Hotel is a lovely setting for afternoon tea. The food and the service were both top notch. My one complaint is the music. I had expected lovely harp music however I guess this has now become the destination for birthdays. Every 20 minutes or so a cupcake with a candle was brought to a table and the harpist played Happy Birthday. I felt like I was at Chuckie Cheese. For this reason only I would go elsewhere for afternoon tea in the future."

"This was not my first time at the High Tea. I have been 3 other times but that was a treat from 2 daughters. So I paid the bill and that was a shock considering the tea and food. Yes, we were full but a lot was cups and cups of tea. My daughters were going to take me again for Mothers Day but i told them to cancel because of the price. We are going to a nice restaurant for a FULL DINNER AND I DOUBT IT WILL COST THEM AS MUCH. We don't order liquor or wine which keeps the cost down."

"This is such a lovely environment for having afternoon tea. Unfortunately, our experience was marred by the fact that there was a large, loud group of women seated in one section. It was obvioulsly a group meeting of some kind with people getting up to talk, clapping, etc. The Palm Court was not a suitable place for this. Too bad management allowed it. My overall rating would have been higher if not for this annoyance."

"We had Afternoon Tea at 3pm on Easter Sunday. We have experienced Afternoon Tea in many venues throughout the world and US, and the Palm Court was a major disappointment. Service was slow and inattentive. Crying babies and toddlers throwing tantrums destroyed the atmosphere. Quality of the food was marginal. The special pastries were skimpy, scones were dry and the banana nut bread forgettable. The dishes and utensils were a mix-and-match of various patterns and styles, some real silver, some stainless, etc etc. We will not come back."

"We are familiar with the tradition of Afternoon Tea and have enjoyed it numerous times, most often in Toronto. The Palm Court ambience and service did not disappoint; we had a lovely table right beside the fountain. As vegetarians, we advised ahead of time and were accommodated. There were two things that disappointed: All of our sandwiches were served on plain white bread--no variety or creativity; other patrons had a variety and we wondered why the same standard isn't applied to all guests? Second, while there was a variety of desserts, there was one scone and two slices of banana bread per person. Why double-up on banana bread? It was good, but not noteworthy. Something else, even a different loaf--carrot or chocolate, would be better."

"I had an amazing time with my niece during our visit. She's four years old and was very excited about having a "grown-up" tea party. The staff was amazing and we were allowed to sit right near the fountain and the harpist (who was absolutely fabulous!). "Our Tea at The Palm Court was everything I expected from this Chicago Landmark and more. In one of the original 1920's glamourous hotels in the Windy City, it has retained it's character and gracious ambiance. We came to celebrate my daughter's 24th Birthday for tea with a couple friends, and ended our afternoon with a very pleasant historic tour of The Drake. We have shared Tea together at The Peninsula in Hong Kong, The Plaza in NYC, The Crescent in Bath and our Tea at the Palm Court made hers a very special birthday she will always remember."

"The atmosphere and service were good but the tea sandwiches could be better. The bread was dry and most of the sandwiches lacked flavor. With all of the great things happening in the culinary world, I think a sandwich revamp is in order. The scones were delicious."

"The tea selection is well organized and descriptive for the non-tea drinker. All 4 of us truly enjoyed our tea choices. The sandwiches were of a nice variety and each was very tasty; same for the sweets selections. They were very accommodating of our food allergies, too. Beautiful room setting.
The only drawback was related to their website saying the harpist is there only from 2-4:30 PM on weekdays. But it does report that in February they do not have the harpist there on Mondays and Tuesdays. I did tell this to the front desk when I checked out of the hotel later in the week and I hope they have corrected it.
Bottom line, I will happily return for their tea service, but will call first to be sure the harpist will be there."

"The ambiance was very good,food delicious, tea was perfect. It seems that service level has declined in comparison to 2 years ago. It is unfortunate that service made me decide that I would not take my friends from foreign country to have an afternoon tea at the Drake Hotel anymore."

"We celebrated my sister's birthday here. We had a total of 8 people and were seated in a beautiful location. Our waiter was very attentive and efficient. I mentioned in my reservation that it was my sister's birthday and they surprised her with a piece of cake on a decorated plate and the harpist simultaneously played happy birthday when the cake was served. Definitely a fun place to go with the ladies. There were only two men there, but it does give the impression it's a ladies day out type of place."

"I don't know if it was understaffed, but the service was very slow and we had to ask for more hot water. I was a little surprised as we have been coming there every year for 15 years and have never had a problem. We will be back again."
