Stephen's on State
Stephen's on State originally opened their doors in June of 2003 under the name Stephen's Prime. Primarily a steak house, the restaurant operated for three years before the owners felt a change was necessary. They wanted to create a more casual setting and in August 2008 renovations began. The entire face of the restaurant was demolished and replaced with sliding french doors that open out to the street. Opening under the name Stephen's on State, the restaurant now offers outside cafe dining in addition to the ala carte lunch and dinner menu. Responding to the high volume of bar business, Stephen's once again renovated in August of 2008 and expanded into the adjacent building doubling the bar capacity and adding a new dance floor. With live entertainment Monday through Saturday, many people are coming to Stephen's to enjoy a full dining experience, dance, or maybe simply to enjoy an appetizer and cocktail from their extensive martini and wine list while listening to music.

"We were met by the owner who was not the least bit friendly and all but threw the menus at us. The food was just tolerable. The wait staff was wonderful but I will not be going back."

"My fiance and I took my parents and my grandmother to Stephen's for Mother's day. Everyone loved their food! I ordered the Chicken Stephen and it was amazing. I'm craving it again already! My fiance ordered the steak and as usual he loved it. Stephen's is were we went on our first date and we will always recommend it to people. They even gave my grandmother a flower for Mother's Day. Overall, great experience."

"I was looking forward to having dinner at Stephen's. The State salad I ordered for over $8 was mainly a bowl full of spinach and large gobs of blue cheese. It was not worth the price. I ordered the chicken stephen which sounded delicious on the menu. Sitting upon a bed of mash potato were three or four shrimp, maybe a tablespoon of crab and an overcooked chicken cutlet. The entree was over twenty dollars. Yes, I should have sent it back but we were running late for a show. I was glad I had a coupon as it was certainly not worth the cost. I will not return."

"We were there at 7 PM on a summer Saturday night and the place was full. It is always good to see lots of locals and they were in full force. They had live music as well and a very busy bar. The service was friendly and attentive which was an accomplichement for such a busy place. Our food was excellent. It was difficult to have a conversation since it was so noisy and the tables are close to each other. I would not recommend it for a romantic dinner but for a family dinner it was fun and we intend to return."

"Lively atmosphere. Fine for a date night, but not a quiet romantic spot. Live music from the bar side is a bit loud for dining, in my opinion. But fun, nonetheless. My husband and I started by sharing a salad, that for the most part was good. But the balsamic vinegarette dressing was way too salty. I had the seared diver scallops on crabmeat risotto. Delicious!! My husband had the seafood alfredo, which was okay, but a bit bland tasting (maybe because the too-salty salad dressing ruined his palate!). The dessert we shared was xango. Outstanding, and plenty for two! Server was attentive and friendly. Overall, a nice, fun date night."

"Upon entering this popular small town establishment one is instantly captured by its cool, classy and chic ambiance. Steven's party in the front, business in the back setting allows for the perfect balance of elegance and fun. We were ushered to a "u" shaped booth in the center of the room that provided a comfortable nook for a delightful mix of friendly conversation and people watching. The expectation was high at this point but quickly went to mediocre as our service was extremely slow. The waiter was not rude but did not go out of his way to be friendly. The food was fantastic; the filet was one of the best I have ever had. We would give it another try but at this point it's not yet "rave" worthy."

"We visit several times a year and the food is always good. A favorite is the State Salad; good flavor and always has a fresh taste and feel to it. Teriyaki filet was could have used a little more sauce. The pan seared mahi-mahi special was very good although the accompanying sauteed spinach had a lot of garlic (too much?) and left me thirsty all night. Service was good but there was a minor problem between server and kitchen as the table next to us ordered their meal several minutes after we did and were served 10 minutes before us. We were not in a rush so it really didn't matter."

I feel that the dinner prices are overpriced although the food was decent it wasn't anything special, although they certainly were trying to make the restaurant seem upscale. Not my kind of place, would rather go to many of the other restaurants and bars in Media on my next night out."

"The waiiter was less attentive than what we needed, especially since no one else was in the back room with us. That being said, we all enjoyed our dinners and when the waiter was at our table he was very nice and helpful. The music was loud but they did turn it lower after we requested. All in all, we had a great time together and had a nice meal. We would go back again for the food."

"Food was mediocre and expensive. Very disappointing. Sea bass and risotto was very bland. My husbands run eye was good but alittle over done for medium. His risotto was awful. I asked it a vegetable came with dinner and the waiter said it would be mixed in with the risotto. There were a few little pieces of spinach mixed in. Definetly not my idea if a vegetable side."

"Had a reservation and waited 45 minutes after to sit down at our table. After we did, it took them forever to bring out our food (after waiting awhile we thought they were bringing out our appetizers and was only bringing out bread). Food was just ok."

"The food was excellent! My only issue is that the service was fairly slow. Our waitress was very friendly, however we thought she could have done a better job of checking up on our table and letting us know what was going on with the food. But overall, we had a great meal and would definitely recommend."

"First time here. The general manager was extremely rude. He barely looked at us when I told him my name for our reservation. He walked us to our table, put the menus down and kept walking forward without even turning around or telling us to enjoy, etc. It was really bizarre, especially from a GM. My Mom loved her steak and tomato and mozzarella salad. I didn't care for my iceberg wedge, my tilapia was extremely fishy and the risotto was very bland. The lava cake dessert was delicious. I loved the decor. I doubt I'll return. It was overpriced for such mediocre food. If I am going to pay that much for dinner, I prefer to go somewhere that I really enjoy, not somewhere that's just ok."

"For appetizers, the scallops wrapped in bacon were mouth watering. The crab cake sliders were also tasty and the veal saltimbocca literally jumps in the mouth. Our waiter was a little bit apathetic and disinterested the whole night. Since we used a promotional coupon, the waiter added a 20% gratuity to the total tab which was a little annoying since we were not planning on leaving him more than 15% of the total. Overall the quality of the food outweighed the poor service. I believe this was an outlier as the other guests seemed to be getting good service."

"We recently had a rather frustrating first experience at Stephen's. We enjoyed the food, especially the mussels and scallop risotto, however the slow, poor service made for an overall poor experience. It took over 30 minutes to receive our app (mussels) and after finishing our meal it took another 15 minutes to get the attention of our waiter for our check. He then proceeded to push a dessert menu under our arms. We enjoyed our food, but based on the terrible service and strange atmosphere (a cross between a bar/grill and family dining, definitely not romantic) we probably will not return. We left frustrated because it has lots of potential, but seems to have an identity crisis."
