"I've eaten Ethiopian food regularly since my Peace Corps time there over 40 years ago. The food at Ethiopic is now the very best Ethiopian food I've ever had. Friends who never liked Ethiopian food before also love Ethiopic. The service, too, just keeps setting new standards for friendly professionalism in a very pleasant, cosy setting that is always packed with other happy diners. Book early!"

"I had came to expect H Street restaurants to be loud with uncomfortable chairs. Ethiopic was comfortable with a good noise level for talking. The food was great. I had their signature lamb tibs and the meat was served in a stone bowl with a candle lit burner beneath it to keep the food hot. No need to rush. The sauce was delicious and spicy with lots of jalapeno peppers and tomatoes. We paired it with a vegetarian platter and I loved everything on it. They don't have sambusa on the menu, something I expected. The coffee was great, as it should be since Ethiopian coffee is so delicious."

"Food was excellent, some dishes spicy while others were super spicy - a nice range. The suggestions were spot on from our server, and I would say the service was comfortable, very gracious. Very warm ambiance. Great meal. The locale was fun, lots going on, and lots to watch. Should you want a little privacy (for 2) ask for the tables in the hollows by the windows."

"This is my second time visiting Ethiopic, and I gave it a good review before. I am pleased to say they have earned another good review. Different food, different time of week, different company, and yet they were as understated and impressive as before. The food is very flavorful, light, and as spicy as you want it. The notable wine list is a great compliment to their dishes, although I think they need a wider selection of white wine by the glass. The lamb was juicy and perfectly cooked, as was every vegetarian dish we had. I am a bit confused by the chopped greens, however. And the diced tomato, while full of flavor, seemed a bit simple and out of place. The low lit, calm and quiet atmosphere also makes this a nice place to actually talk."

"My wife and I visited Ethiopic to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The space itself is outstanding. There is ample space between tables which allows conversations to occur easily. Sevice was excellent. We were served by a TEAM. Additional injera was brought (without our having to ask), and plates removed by young ladies who were not our server. The last time I received that much attention was at a 5-star restaurant. The food was very good. We selected the Vegetarian Sampler II, which consisted of seven dishes. My favorite was Fosolia (caramelized green beans, onions, & carrots mixed with jalapeno peppers). GO, you will not be disappointed!"

"Although most of the alcohol (besides the beer) is very expensive for what you receive, Ethiopic's food is amazingly delicious. If you're there with a group, I would recommend a salad (the beet or lentil ones have good flavor and spice), the veggie sampler II, and the signature shiro. You can't go wrong!"

"Though injera was traditionally made with only teff flour, almost all Ethiopian restaurants in the DC area now use a mixture of teff flour and wheat flour in their injera. As a gluten intolerant diner, I often end up eating Ethiopian food with a fork and a side of rice instead of the way it was intended to be eaten. However, if one requires gluten free injera, just call Ethiopic a day in advance to request it, and the restaurant staff will be sure to provide it with your dinner. Very helpful and delicious!"

"An afternoon outing for 4, we enjoyed the leisurely pace and atmosphere of a Sunday dinner. I have eaten at 3 Ethiopian restaurants prior to this one and was curious to compare. An interesting twist at this place was serving the injera bread in smaller rolled portions of 4-5 in a basket. The fish marinated in herbs and fried was excellent and ample portions. I really liked the simple, yet tasteful decor of the room and the food presentation dishes. Since we sampled a variety of items, I enjoyed all dishes- lamb, beef, vegetarian sides and the fish!"

"Food is great. I've had Ethiopian food before but it was my wife's first time. We both really enjoyed the food. Was a bit disappointed with the experience. We arrived early for our opentable reservation and inquired if we could be seated early. We were informed that they couldn't seat us until AFTER our reservation time. This was annoying because there were clearly a number of open tables. Ultimately we ended up eating at the bar and three of those open tables were still open when we left an hour and a half later which was like a slap in the face. Our waitress was nice enough but the bartender and host were rather rude"

"The food is excellent and the restaurant is spotless. We arrived before our reservation time, but they decided to put the smaller reserved tables together to accommodate a large walk-in group. This was annoying, but we were eventually seated 20-30 min late. One of our waitresses was helpful and pleasant; the other clearly did not want to be working. The food makes up for the so-so service. The larger vegetarian platter is worth the splurge. The lamb entree was tender and flavorful. I definitely recommend this place."

"This is a great spot to dine out and the food (very diverse) is some of the BEST ethiopian food since Fashika's restaurant burned down in Adam's Morgan years ago. I've tried almost all of the local ethiopian places in DC. Ethiopic definitely rate's very high in food, ambiance, and especially customer service categories. I have only one comment to recommend for consideration: Reserved seating (for 2) should be given 1:45 minutes or 2 hours to dine. When people dine out there's lots of conversation and a relaxed atmosphere of ordering. Sometimes 1:30 minutes is not enough."

"First impression walking into the restaurant was that the food smelt delicious. However, we arrived early for our reservation (about 10 min) and we had to stand akwardly next to the front door waiting for our table. The restaurant was very hot and humid and the host did not offer us a seat at the bar. There were open tables but the host clearly depends on the opentable reservation to allocate a specific table to a specific group so we were not offered a table for 2 even though one was open. We got a vegetarian sampler platter for 2. The food was plentiful, however we asked the server which dishes were spicey (my boyfriend has a very low spice tolerance) and we were told 2/7, it was actually 5/7 so my bf couldn't enjoy half of the meal."

"I loved my first visit to this flavorful restaurant. The decor is modern and spotless and the waitresses friendly and helpful. When deciding what to order, the server steered us to a lamb dish and said it was the best (Signature Tibs). We also had a vegetarian sampler and the Miser Wot and the ubiquitous Timatim were the winners there. I enjoyed my generous glass of honey wine, but we did not have room for dessert. I was able to walk away with enough leftovers for one additional meal.
Ethiopic is as good or better than other Ethiopian restaurants I've visited and the abiance is far superior. It's a modern interpretation of traditional cuisine.

The last time our group of three split a vegetarian platter and a beef tibs dish. The beef was the star, and I would definitely get it again. Of the seven parts of the vegetarian sampler #2, we enjoyed 5 or so (the spicy lentils were particularly delicious). The only thing I would have preferred was if the service was a little quicker and more attentive. The drink service was slow, but the food was promptly served and our server's suggestion that two sampler platters would be too much food for three people was spot on."

"Mixed feelings - 1st time there. I will go again & order completely differently. 1st of all, waitresses were all so wonderful! The individual orders of both beef and lamb were large &, frankly, adequate in taste but not great. That being said, lamb was very tender, not fatty, if not particularly flavorful. The beef was a bit tough.Chicken was cooked way too long and mushy. Why would I go there again? We got a sampler of 4 different veggies. Next time I would get the 7 veggie sampler and then maybe try the meat sampler, just to give it another go. Liked the communal feeling of dipping my bread with my friends. And the staff are just so wonderful. The other reviews make me think I just hit the meat options on an off night...."

"I went there for my girlfriend's birthday dinner because we had heard that it was the best Ethiopian food in town. We ordered a veggie combo and Awaze Tibs. She loved it. I thought it was very good. I wasn't blown away by it, but Ethiopian food is not my favorite, so I don't want to skew your opinion. The potatoes were my favorite and the Awaze Tibs were flavorful without being too spicy. The portion size was plenty and we left absolutely stuffed, per usual with Ethiopian. We had a reservation for a Thurs. night at 7:30 pm. It turned out not to be necessary at that time, but the restaurant had filled up a bit more by the time we were leaving around 8:30 or 9 pm. The service was good as was the wine. Casual, but still a nice place. Enjoy!"

"The food was excellent but service very slow. We ordered fish and the vegetarian sampler which was savory and a bit spicy . Our server brought a whole fish crunchy on the outside, encrusted with herbs and cooked to perfection. The baklava we ordered for dessert lacked nuts and was bland, tough, and sans texture. We sat in a window seat and enjoyed watching the street."

"I didn't find this place to be romantic like other reviews suggested. There was a tv at the bar near which we were seated tuned to CNN that was covering some murder trial. Not exactly romantic ambience. The tea was good, the food was okay, the service was okay. I had a reaction to something in the food though, my mouth was swelling up, and I just wanted to get out of there and it took a long time to get our server's attention and then to get the bill. It was't busy at the time. I never said anything about my discomfort, so I'm not blaming them for not rushing. They could have asked why we were abruptly leaving in the middle of our dinner, but I guess they just figured we did't like the food. I would still recommend to others."

"Not as good as in the previous visits. The spicing in the vegetable and meat samplers, a total of eight dishes) was very tame in some. The "shiraz" that I was served was effervescent, not a characteristic of the variety, and we did not get the check with the coffee as requested. Instead it came more than five minutes later after frantically flagging her down as we had a curtain a the Folger Theatre."

"My husband and I have been on the quest for the best Ethiopian restaurant in DC. Seeing as how it was the only one rated in the Washingtonian, we thought to ourselves, this must be great!
The ambiance was quite lovely. Quiet, candle-light dinner and soft music. A gem for a date night or perhaps grab an intimate group of friends to socialize.
It took awhile for the food to come and the ingera (bread) was scarce. We had to ask for bread refills several times and at one point waited over 15 minutes. We've gone to four other Ethiopian restaurants and this was the first one to offer such little amount of bread. They had a lovely choice of Ethiopian wines and the food was still very tasty.
Dukem on U street is still our favorite.

"Great restaurant, ambience is cool and the food is definitely worth trying. It would have been helpful if the waitress would have given us more instructions as to amount to order, how to eat it, etc, but it was still a good experience.
The wine was not so great - I would avoid the Ethiopian wine if you are actually in the mood for a Cab or standard red wine. However, the beer was pretty good.
Only negative was for service - however, it was valentine's day and our waitress appeared to be responsible for half of the restaurant, including bussing the tables. I think they were just short staffed for a super busy night. Other than that, it was a really fun experience."

"Great choice for an Ethiopic cuisine. Food was absolutely delicious. Spent time with fiancé for an early Valentine's. Environment was nice, noise was relatively low but busy with customers during a late dinner. Had to still wait for a little while when ordering & waitress still made a few different recommendations, which I wasn't too fond about. I have had Ethiopian before but first time here."

"Ethiopic was delicious. There were four of us, so we got the veggie platter 2, the shiso (AMAZING) and a fish. The fish is a bit off putting, but the people we were with said it was good after you get past the whole picking it off the bones thing. The wine was not good - we got a bottle of the dry red Ethiopian wine. I guess enough people don't order it, because it had gone bad, but the person who was tasting it thought that Ethiopian wine just tasted bad."

"All in all the experience was very good. The server was friendly and very knowledgable about the menu and willing to assist. My biggest complaint is the parking; one side of the street the parking meters end at 7pm and the other side at 10pm. We were lucky to get a space within two blocks but I had to leave my table to fill the meter and it was a cold February night. They also offer take out; I am sure if I am not back to dine as frequently; I will certainly pick up food for dinner at home."

"Ethiopic was much more than I expected and very reasonably priced. I often find that Ethiopian food is made more mild to accommodate the least common denominator. But, here, the food was well seasoned and relatively spicy. I brought my five students as an introduction to Ethiopian food. They were very impressed. The waitress was also very supportive. My only criticism is that they opened and served a bottle of Ethiopian wine that, quite literally, tasted like vinegar. And it was not inexpensive by the glass. My student did not have the guts to send it back but I know that the bartender could see that we were not happy. He he should have done something about it. It was an unfortunate way to begin the meal."

"Two of us ventured to start the evening with a glass of gouder, Ethiopian red wine, until the waitress winced at our choice. We took her up on a try-before-you-buy policy and discovered that one country’s wine is another country’s vinegar. As we scanned the menu I asked if anyone had dietary restrictions; the blonde-maned lion tamer was the lone voice to respond in the affirmative, noting that she couldn’t eat blue cheese or chocolate. Conveniently, neither ingredient has yet made its way to the Horn of Africa and Ethiopian food knows nothing of them. So it was that we were all content with our sampling of Ethiopian curries, wots, and tibbs, served like daubs of paint on soft palettes of injera bread."
