Acme Restaurant
The ovens are turned on early. Six o'clock most days. Earlier on Sunday. Within an hour, bread is rising, apples are being sliced. Pecan pies are pulled hot from the oven and left to cool. Ice cream churns in the machine. Cups of coffee steam on the prep table, the baker's cup marked with chocolaty fingerprints.
By midmorning, pork shoulder, rubbed with spices the day before, is slowly smoked. And white buckets are filled with sliced onions. Corn is shucked. The stock that cooked all night is taken off the stove and strained. Bags of fresh shrimp are delivered in old grocery store bags.
The waiters arrive in groups, shirts and ties on hangers. By then, every burner in the kitchen is being used. Herbs are chopped. Scallops cleaned. Ovens at 500 degrees. All sauces are checked. Bartenders polish their shakers. Silverware is rolled and every surface is wiped down. Music. Lights. Doors are opened.
Dinnertime. At Acme. Seven nights a week. Local never tasted so damn good.

"We had a good time at Acme & had a great waiter ( or two! ) but were very disappointed that the advertised soft-shell crab was not available! We came more-or-less for that special item & expected it to be on the menu, so were rather let down by that. Oh well, it happens!"

"Acme is a fine restaurant in the middle of Carrboro. The food is outstanding and depends on many of the fine local organic farmers to supply them. We very much enjoyed NC catfish and NC (I think) soft shell crabs. Excellent menu, quite varied, with a "southern comfort" dessert list. Not cheap, but in line with comparable restaurants in the area. Only negative is that it is very loud which limits conversation. This might be alleviated by dining outside..it was cold and rainy the night we were there so this wasn't an option. That's what we will choose for our next visit."

"Meeting my husband to celebrate our wedding anniversary, I got there a few minutes before him. The entry way was very crowded and I am very pregnant (38 weeks). I asked if I could be seated at the table that I made reservations for and but was told that I could not be seated until both of us were there. I hate this sort of policy in general, but I was livid that they had no problem watching me remain uncomfortable standing and continue to get jostled in the narrow hallway. I was on the verge of just leaving and getting take out somewhere else. The food was excellent and our waitress was wonderful. But the hostess and/or the policy of this restaurant and how they treated me was extremely rude. I might be done with Acme."

"I ordered the scallops, which were delectable. My husband wanted to order the flounder special, but they could not provide a substitute for the asparagus that came with the dish, so he ordered steak. It was excellently done, although if the same steak had been ordered at a regular steakhouse, without the Acme embellishments, it would not have been that flavorful. All in all, the Acme has been our "go to" restaurant for years for creative food, nice atmosphere, and good service."

"This was my second time at Acme, and the first time I was Blown away by how amazing the food was, and the service was respectable. However, this time I was not impressed at all. It was a tuesday, so their special was running, but we were seated by a group of 16 and our waitress then completely overlooked/ignored us. It took over an hour to get our food, while we had been seated immediately due to a reservation, and I could tell our food had been sitting under heat lamps for a WHILE, especially when it was someone from the kitchen who finally brought our food out. It is a shame that service is sacrificed, and my eating experience less than sub par. I was quite disappointed"

"I have been to Acme 30 times in the last year, and consider it one of my favorite restaurants in the neighborhood. The last two times have been on weeknights, and I have been sorely disappointed with the quality control of the dishes coming out of the kitchen. The last time I came on a Tuesday night ($12.95 entree night) I assumed the problems with the dishes were intentional to scare away the cheapskates, but on Wed night we also had noticeable problems with each of our dishes. Fried tomato slices no larger than a golf ball and on the clammy side, Calamari salad with very few, slightly soggy calamari, salad without all advertised toppings (they were out), cornbread that smells great but slightly over-salted and soggy... disappointing!"

"Although I had eaten at Acme's for the first time a couple of months ago, I wanted to try it on a (half/price Tuesday). I ordered the oyster salad for an appetizer and it was truly amazing. The combination of the hot oysters with the delicously seasoned salad was both refreshing and satisfying. My main course was the catfish with rice. Loved the catfish but could have done w/o the peanuts on top as they didn't add to the dish. Save room for the butterscotch pudding. Simply heaven! Service was good however, because of the half/price deals it got crowded relatively quickly and wait-staff became busy. If you have time, appreciate knowledgeable and professional wait-staff and want great food at half price, Acme is the place!"

"Our server was not interested in giving good service. He never checked to see if our food was good okay anything. I order a drink from the bar first out of ten people and was the last to receive it. He never filled water glasses or made sure we had what we needed. When you pay over $400.00 for a group meal you expect good service. I will not go back again."

"WE have brunched all around the Triangle and the brunch at ACME is the BEST!!! Not only is it extensive but also imaginative as well as tasty. You are in for a real treat. Also the 12.95 Tuesdays can't be beat for value. ALL entrees on Tuesday are 12.95 and I mean all including any specials. That's a real buy. Happy dinning."

"I checked "fit for foodies" even though I only checked "good" in rating the food. There were five of us, all who have eaten in restaurants all over the US and Europe, and the responses were mostly positive but not "raves." One person who ordered the rib eye said it was very tough but that the flavor was good. The dishes I ordered were good but not spectacular. However, I will go back. The menu is very interesting, and we really like the venue. I don't know if it will be come a favorite (we're new in the area), but it has possibilities."

"We made the reservation online using Open Table. We received the email confirmation of our reservation, but when we got to the restaurant, they didn't have our name on the list. The hostess said that we probably didn't hit the 'submit' button online. When we told her that we had gotten an email confirmation, it wasn't until we pulled up our email on our smart phone to show her. We were then seated and she apologized. She later did find our name, but it wasn't on her main reservation page. The lighting was so dim at our table that we each had to pull out flashlights to read the menu. We love the food there and have been there several times. It would be good if they were to change up the menu some."

"We have been dining at Acme for years and it remains one of our favorite places for all occasions, from week-night out to TG dinner. Kevin Callaghan, owner and head chef, has the wit and wisdom of Calvin Trillin, and invests all of that in being a creative and consistently excellent chef. Acme is committed to sourcing local food and serving it up in fresh ways. He regularly comes up with delicious specials. Great wait staff, and Lulu and Brian make the bar just as delightful a place to have dinner as the floor."

"My only complaint was the area we were seated in. The psuedo-room off to the side of the bar..It didn't let the out-of-towners I brought get any of the real ambience of the restaurant. It's an ugly little space compared to the bar and the main dining room. They saw none of the art. the food was excellant as it always is. But I do think i wud have to opt out if I get that table again."

"Just what me and my gal pal were looking for in a Sunday Brunch! We've gone two Sundays in a row and it's been perfect each time. Definitely try the featured Acme Mimosa, and if the special includes the Doughnut Trio, that is a MUST get! Service is friendly and great. I will definitely return."

"We went to Acme for our 3 year anniversary and had a wonderful experience. The food was fresh and flavorful and the local entree specials were amazing. I had the roast guinea hen and my partner had the pork chops. One of the best things about Acme is the seasonal menu, so you constantly have the opportunity to try something new and fresh. We also enjoyed a few lovely cocktails - the Rosemary Street was tangy and unique and Vieux Carolina was a nice full-bodied and manly sort of drink - and the house threw in a champagne toast for our anniversary. Cheers! The service was consistently attentive, timely, and professional. The ambiance was romantic and unhurried. I highly recommend Acme for foodies and for all!"

"The restraunt was smaller than we expected, but that was OK. Staff was very friendly and welcoming.
Friends were visiting from out-of-State and wanted a local meal. We choose Acme for it use of local produce and meats. The menu was "interesting."
We were not terribly impressed with the food. A friend tried a special, the Irish stew, and found it to be spicy hot. The pasta with a "game" meat was OK. The saugage was great, but the boar was strong and "gamey." The scallops (3 of them) were good, but the puree of cauliflower and gruyere cheese was bland and did not taste of either ingredient. The Irish creme eclairs were the hit of the meal."

"Treat yourself to one of the specials. The chef prepares interesting dishes that must be tasted. You will not be sorry. My personal favorite from the small plate menu is the Asian calmari salad. Service is great."

"Loved our first visit to my old towns new hot spot restaurant. The food was as to be expected..well prepared, perfectly seasoned, and served on time and temp was good. My only complaint, if there has to be one, was the lighting. Yes...it certainly was romantic, but I couldnt read the menu because of the lack of light. Other than that, it was a great dinning experience. The corn bread was fantastic! Our server was on point and had a great charm about her. I hope we can return soon to try the other southern dishes that Acme has become so well known for in the future. My little old town has certainly grown up since I last lived there 20 yrs ago. "The food was amazing, we took some picky friends who arefrim LA and they were thoroughly impressed. The host was inflexible with our reservation envenomed though half the place was empty and let out a noticeable sigh when we asked for a table with more room since we had a little one. Would not reccmond for children."

"During clearing of the table, server dropped our leftover steak on the floor, on the way to the kitchen. We weren't told until after we'd ordered dessert. Server used this time to prepare another steak for us to take home. We appreciated this gesture, but would have liked to have known ahead of time. We might would have asked for compensation for desserts instead of getting a new steak. Also, water glasses were left unfilled during second half of evening."

"Had reservations for 4 @8pm.It was very busy but they seated us quickly. The service was prompt, friendly, and helpful with the awesome menu. Shared delicious hot cornbread app. All 4 entrees outstanding: guinea hen, fried chicken, salmon & catfish. Great way to entertain our out of towners!"
