Step into the eternal darkness that is the mysterious Wellington and you may wonder if that grand mahogany door is really a portal to another time and place. The look suggests 2 a.m. at a private club of the 1920s where high rollers and powerful politicians rendezvoused and luxurious vices were celebrated. A flock of assorted chandeliers flies at various heights from the peaked ceiling and behind the five seat bar, glass shelves filled with fine liquors gleam in front of sparkling mirrors.
The Wellington's epicurean joys are rooted in respectful, savvy reworkings of classic dishes. Perfectly charred steaks and crispy duck confit are the kinds of dishes that grace the menu. The house specialty, beef Wellington, perfectly cooked medium filet mignon, Cremini mushroom duxelle with flakey, golden brown puff pasry. The Wellington offers a martini list awash in creativity and perfect wine pairings with over 40 choices, both domestic and international.

"We came especially to try their beef Wellington, which we are very familiar with, as we have tried this dish in many restaurants around the world. Being accomplished cooks ourselves, we know exactly how to make it: it is not that complicated.
When we dared asking the waiter to accommodate the cooking to our liking (medium well), he plainly said that the restaurant wouldn’t do it. They would only serve it medium rare. Since we had this simple dish in many restaurants before and being accomplished cooks ourselves, we know that accommodating someone’s taste is not a big deal: slice your Wellington, delicately take the meat out of the crust, cook the meat to the desired level then put the meat back in the crust. Condescending waiter."

"We were in town visiting colleges with our son and wanted to try beef wellington AND it just happened to be our anniversary, so we decided to try out The Wellington. I made a special note in my reservation that it was our anniversary and The Wellington did not disappoint! The service, food, and ambiance were all outstanding. I definitely recommend the beef wellington. Very happy. It was a great evening."

"Venison was delightful and the server made a good wine selection for it. Good pre-meal cocktails as well! Small place with close tables, but it wasn't too loud. Good decor made you feel tucked away for a nice meal, forgetting it's located on a busy street. If you go for happy hour, the deals are very good."

"Not bad, but not exciting. So much promise but it doesn't really deliver. The food is OK, but not stellar (certainly not as good as its price-tag implies). Venison was cold and uninteresting, the Wellington was decent. Our waitress was great and the live jazz pair were excellent. That's about it. The rest of the staff are useless. Simple things don't really work in this place. Also a peeve: the host clearly seats people by his view of importance: the same-sex couples got seated at small tables on the edges, the big booths given to "cute couples", even though that meant putting a four top a table instead. Welcome? Almost everyone here is here to celebrate something, make it count..."

"My wife and I shared the Yellowtail salad, I had the New York Strip with Au Poivre sauce and she had the venisson, and they were all nothing short of amazing. The meat was perfectly cooked and seasoned and had to be some of the most delicious we've ever had! The service was a little slow at first and the interior is rather small and dark, but neither of those things were significant enough to warrant anything less than 5 stars in my book. We would definitely go back."

"The food was great. The server was a nice guy who helped us make great selections, but the food was pretty slow coming out of the kitchen. We got there on time for 5:30 reservation and let him know we had tickets to a play that started at 8:00. We barely made it to the play on time and only because they started about 10 minutes late. It was only about a 10 minute drive to the venue. Yes, we ordered appetizer, entree and dessert, but it still should not have taken more than 2 hours to do all that. I would go back to this restaurant, but not when I have to be someplace after dinner."

"We really liked this place. Very cozy. Such a refreshing change of pace from the usual chain steakhouse. Terrific Gin martini & the clam starter was amazing. The choice of sauce with your steak makes it interesting. Excellent wedge salad too. My only gripe was the meat in my Wellington got overcooked - order it very rare if you want it to stay pink. We came for our anniversary but would definitely come again."

Another guest in our party ordered the duck and it was so fatty, he sent it back. The manager was very apologetic and did comp a meal and a bottle of wine and brought us a free dessert. "Had a wonderful experience at The Wellington for our anniversary. We had been to the Red Door, but were overdue to try this more intimate spot next door. Having grown up in Mission Hills, we frequented the original corner restaurant, Figaro's back in the day. So happy that a memorable meal can still be had at this corner. Service from Heather was excellent. The chef even rounded the restaurant to check in with diners. Everything we tried was delicious. Ambiance is romantic, semi-dark, perfect for romance. We will be back!"

"The service was outstanding and the beef wellington special, a 3 course meal($36.00) that included a organic green salad and a peanut butter/chocolate with peanut brittle was available on the Sunday we visited.
The specialty was a filet mignon wrapped in a puff pastry with a delicious cremini mushroom with sauce and absolutely delicious.
We would recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys beef and steak!"

"We had a party of 6. Our server Katie was great, all the staff is fun and down to earth. The restaurant was smaller than I expected but would be perfect for a buy-out or a romantic dinner for 2. I would have given The Wellington 5 stars for the food but some of it came out cold - the manager quickly rectified the situation to all of our satisfaction. The flavor of the food was outstanding and a good variety of items to choose from.
I think it's a neighborhood gem and will recommend it to friends who want to dine in the area."

"First time at The Wellington. AMAZING steaks! The quality of steaks are the best I've had in a long time (they cut like butter). Foodwise, you better love steak as there are few non-steak options on the menu, but they do an amazing steak! It's a 1-room kinda restaurant, so VERY small. Only complaint I had was we were seated by the door and it was a cold evening so everytime the door was opened a cold draft reached out table, no other tables were available to move, so keep in mind to request another table (during winter) if it's near the front door. We didn't finish our wine, and they corked it and let us take it home...to which we polished it off the following evening! Can't wait to go back when I'm craving a delicious steak!"

"We had a wonderful dining experience. The martini's were very good. The beef wellington was excellent. The mac and cheese was to die for. "I placed a special note to have a nice dessert that congratulate my daughter for graduating written on the plate when I did the reservation. I'm glad they took the time to read that special note when other restaurants will just ignore it.

"Fantastic gem. Food was absolutely delicious. My date had the Filet Mignon and I had the Beef Wellington and everything was delicious. Salad was just a salad but the wonderful pumpkin bisque on a cold rainy day was perfect. Would definitely recommend. Make reservations!!!!"

"This was our first time to Wellington and upon walking in I was surprised of how small and intimate the place is. It was a nice surprise. We partook in the restaurant week menu and everything was great. I had the wellington since that was their specialty. It was not the best I have had but it was very good. My husband had the filet and the meat just melted in your mouth. I would recommend this restaurant but would also recommend making a reservation because of the size of the restaurant. They were turning away people when we were there because they did not have a reservation or the room to accommodate them."

"I have been here twice now each time celebrating a friends birthday. From the moment I sat down to the last spoon full of dessert I was in heaven. The best steak I have ever had. I have had both the beef Wellington and a flatiron steak. The Yukon potatoes melt in your mouth as well as the steak and vegetables are just right. So of your think of an intimate place where you are treated well then think no further and go."
