Grand Cafe & Bakery was founded in 1923 by Mr. Ti Chong Ho, grandfather of one of the owners and partner Mr. Pang. During this period the Territory of Hawaii & particularly downtown Honolulu were bustling with activity. These Chinese entrepreneurs were part of the scene. American food was served and confectioneries offered.
Grand Cafe & Bakery was been re-established in 2005. Our foods and recipes reflect a Honolulu of the early 1920's with a contemporary flavor.
Executive Chef and owner, Anthony Kui Sin Vierra, great grandson of founder Mr.Ho is a graduate of California Culinary Academy. Chef Anthony brings his skills, talent, creativity to this family cafe. Comfort foods & old time island favorites made with the freshest ingredients will continue to be the focus. Awards: Critics Choice for Best Breakfast; Finalist for Best Bistro - New American Cuisine & our lemon cake was awarded best dessert. Tasty food & warm surroundings welcome you to this special spot in Chinatown!
"I was so looking forward to the Grand Cafe Mother's Day brunch at its new location. Sadly disappointed---bland, tasteless, & over-priced. The curry chicken needed more curry, the fish was dense & over-cooked, the muffin w/the eggs Benedict was too hard to eat, even the bacon lacked the bacon flavor. I won't venture back nor recommend Grand Cafe for its buffet."

""I hope you have a reservation" was a such a pleasant greeting from the hostess. Bland ice tea at room temperature on a hot, humid day followed. Food was bland and service was slow. No one ever came back to check on our table after food was served. I will not return to Grand Cafe until it can live up to its name."

"Food was excellent, but the service felt "rushed." I guess we overstayed the time alloted for our reservation because our server brought desserts to us in take-out boxes. It's nice for special occasions because it can get pretty expensive, but the food is very good."

"We were celebrating a birthday of my assistant in my office and our food took an hour to get to us. I had to ask the waiter 3 times the reason for the delay and he said it was because our order ticket had fallen to the floor.
all they gave us was one free piece of dessert."

"Service needs some help. Don't walk around looking for something to do. Communicate with your customers if the kitchen is backed up. Don't forget to serve drinks and soups before the main dish arrives. After dropping off the main course, come back at least once to check on your customer. If you want to be efficient, never go to and from the kitchen empty handed....maybe we got the new server because the veteran waiters were hitting it, I felt jealous of those customers.
That said, the food was as it was at the previous place, yummy! Same furniture = same cute ambiance. Looking forward to going back to see how it's going to evolve in its new place."

"I was excited about the reopening of Grand Cafe in its new location. However, while my experience was good, the restaurant still needs to adjust to its new space. Our reserved table was in a cramped location, where I had to squeeze into my seat so my chair wouldn't hit the wall. Three different servers took our drink orders & recited specials, all with different dish descriptions. Then overattentiveness changed to total lack of attention. When the dining room filled up with the noon lunch crowd, we were forgotten. Once the food had arrived, the server's job was finished. The special sandwich of the day, seared ahi, was cooked nicely but utterly bland and without the promised grainy mustard."

"The food was as good as I remembered it from their location in Chinatown. It's still really loud and hard to have a conversation in this location when the restaurant is full. Go early if you want a quiet table along the edge of the restaurant. But all in all, I'll be back!"

"Went on a Sunday--only brunch available, and only a hand full of choices. Mostly egg benedicts. It was okay. Expensive! A couple of the owners came by the table and they were really nice. I might go back just because of them."

"Great food tucked away in a corner of the Hawaii State Art Museum. Signature dishes: Crab Omlette with Hollandaise and the Bananas Fosters French Toast! The pastry selection was delicious (both minis and full sized). A definite treasure of a place for a quiet breakfast/brunch or lunch. Park in Alii Tower across the street (public parking at $.75/hour) or find street parking. The chef was previously at 12th Avenue Grill so you know the food is very good!"
