"We chose Chapeau to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary and were extremely disappointed. Arriving 10 minutes before our scheduled reservation time, we sat at the bar for 55 minutes waiting for a table. We were finally seated but didn't receive menus or water for another 10 minutes. Dinner took 2 more hours. The bread was excellent, the fennel soup was "interesting" but not a do-over. Do sweetbreads taste like chicken livers? I don't know, but my husband ate them. Despite the long waits, our primary complaint was being served wonderfully delicate fish (skate and halibut) drenched in incredibly overpowering sauces. I declined dessert as it was near 10:00 pm and 3 hours is too long to sit. All in all, we were quite unhappy"

"almost perfect. the food is incredible. i highly recommend it. the chef is amazing. he greets you at the door. he even took pictures with us. i'm just a little saddened for a couple of reasons.
it was suppose to be a special occasion. it was my girlfriend's birthday, it was also our last dinner together before she moves for work to new york. i wanted to do something special so i asked the restaurant to write happy birthday or bon voyage on the dessert. i confirmed our reservation, and they said they saw that note and will try their best. i was really disappointed to see that they didn't even put a candle on her cake :(
they forgot to wrap my rack of lamb. i had to ask. it was nice though that they wrapped me another serving lamb to g"

"Outstanding for food and service... great tastes, variety, presentations. Service was attentive and pleasant. We'll hope that next visit (and there will indeed be a next and nexus) will be less overwhelmed by a very loud party. The shouts and laughter (not bad noise... just too many decibels) made some conversation difficult, even tho' the group was in the opposite corner."

"One of my favorite restaurants in SF, always consistent warm, friendly, professional service. Food is great as usual. Ellen and Phillippe run a wonderful restaurant. We are always welcomed as valued patrons and given little extras like desserts. I have watched Chapeau! grow from their original California St site to the current one and am delighted that they made the top 100 list for the second year."

"Loved almost every single thing about this place. Food, wine, deserts all absolutely stellar. Phillip, the head chef, is an absolute joy and a wonderful restaurant personality. I didn't love the lady who did the seating, but thats really a tiny blemish on what was otherwise a simply phenominal dining experience."

"The food was great. They made us wait 30 min before seating us (and that was with a reservation) and it took another 40 minutes for the main course to find its way to our table. The place is rather smile and it feels almost like sitting at a communal table except you're not."

"This was my second time to chapeau! and they didn't disappoint. You really have to make a reservation here to get a table but the good news is once you do they completely take care of you. This was an indulgent girls' night dinner with two of my best girlfriends, and we had an 8 pm reservation. However, one of my friends, a doctor, got held up at the hospital and was 90 minutes late. We told the waiter this, and they gave us absolutely no issues. My other friend and I split a bottle of wine and had appetizers and complimentary (and delicious) cauliflower soup while we waited, and they served her quickly when she arrived. The waitstaff were friendly and the food was delicious - especially our complimentary dessert!"

"We have been going to Clementine for years. Went once when it had just changed over to Chapau, the Clementine chef was still there. But the minute we sat down on our recent visit we knew everything had changed. The French waiters were gone. The chef gone. In its place the new owners were trying valiantly to keep up the quality of the past. Sorry to say they failed. This is not a fine dining experience any longer. I believe the new owners thought that if they made the portions larger it would make up for the quality. Sad. I left the restaurant nearly in tears for it was a great find, years ago."

"Chapeau is not what is use to be. The dessert was very good... but the rest of the meal was average. I had not been to Chapeau for over a year. It was always a solid choice for a mid-week meal. The value is there but the quality is not. There was no one behind the bar to order a drink before dinner.... the time was 7:15pm. They had two wines by the glass and it was poor at best. The well vodka was a low grade smirnoff. The food flavors were "production" and not unique. The fish was cooked to perfection but the sauce had too much butter. The service was ok but not attentive. Before my main course my wife and I should of been asked if we wanted a glass of wine. I really wanted to like this resturant but I could not."

"The lamb was the best thing we had, the pate was so-so and the halibut was too salty. The desserts were also good.
One of my first disappointments was that I had requested a romantic table and the table they selected was the one closest to the kitchen where all the hustle and bustle is. We requested to be moved and the staff did right away which was good to a center table, but still we should have had a corner table away from the kitchen right from the start."

"We had a very nice meal and all 4 of us tried the 3 course option. Two vegetarians were quite pleased and the meat eaters had a great pork loin and and a wonderful seasonal cassolet. Wine list was equal to the food and the servers were very attentive to our need to leave in time for the theater. A really good, top 100 restaurant dining experience."

"Chapeau is truly a neighborhood gem. Most excellent restaurants these days migrate towards union square/embarcadero/Soma areas so it's nice to have a change. My husband and I went to dinner here a few nights ago and were really impressed. The food was delicious. The portions were larger than we were used to - which really should be a positive lol. The food itself was excellent. The Foie topped Filet was outstanding. The Rack of Lamb was large and impressively flavored. I didn't love the trio of Salmon but it was more of an issue with my distaste for Salmon. An EXCELLENT EXCELLENT dinner. If you're looking for a beautiful romantic dinner, this is a great choice!"

"This is our favorite French restaurant in the bay area, food is reasonably priced and of high quality. Head chef Phillipe is magnificent in his service, he shakes each of his guest's hand good bye before they left. Will definitely return again and again! LOVE Chapeau!"

"Chapeau used to be one of our favorite restaurants in the city up there with Gary Danko. We went after their two restaurants merged and were disappointed and hadn't been back since. But we decided to give it another try and we were pleasantly surprised. The amazing food was back. Foie gras, escargot and mussels appetizers was amazing as always. We had the pork tenderloin, the duck and the steak which disappointed us last time which is now back up to par. For dessert, i ordered my favorite-the french toast and my husband ordered the profiterole. YUMMMMY. Love this restaurant. Service is also eager to pelease, without feeling pretentious."

"Went for the prix fixe. Fell off the wagon and immediately ordered everything a la carte. Paid dearly for it but it was delish. Service was attentive but a little cool. Lamb special was perfect. Lots of tasty riblets with yummy creamy sides though I'm not so clear why one would accompany this dish with both polenta ( artfully and gorgeously camouflaged with swirls of skinny slices of zucchini ) and pommels dauphins. I'm not complaining since I was the beneficiary. It just seemed a little carb intensive. We obviously don't care about carbs or we wouldn't have eaten all the bread and Foie gras either! Other standouts: Salade landaise, piping hot and savory onion soup and the Nuage de noix dessert (cloud of nuts= creamy goodness)"

"We had a great time at Chapeau. Very charming staff and ambiance and the food was delicious. The sear on the foie gras made it the one of the best I've ever had. Everything else we had--even the bread--was warm and delicious. I was looking for a low-key spot for our anniversary dinner, and it was just the right ambiance--quiet earlier in the evening and a little more energetic around 9pm. We will be back!"

"We opted for the 3 course menu. The chef sent out a complementary soup to start us off that was fabulous. I started with a trio of salmon that was bursting with flavor. My sweetie had the mesclun salad which was huge. The fried camembert was a wonderful addition, but the walnut bread didn't add anything to the dish. I had the cassoulet for my entree. The lamb was lost in the dish and the duck leg tasted more like chicken to me. Overall though, it was flavorful and filling... it just didn't have the meat flavors I expected. My sweetie had the filet mignon which was cooked to perfection. Our desserts (chocolate cake and French toast) topped off the meal perfectly."

"We've been there a lot of times and always loved it. This time the food was far from par for this restaurant. The short ribs were over cooked and dry. The boulibaise tasted like dishwater with fish sauce. And the service was terrible and very slow. The waiter would talk us out of ordering the things we wanted. We wanted the cassolette, but the waiter said there was no meat in it. The table next to us got it and it was mostly meat. We were so disappointed. It was bad experience all around."

"I made reservations for my wife and I for our post Valentine's Day dinner and I would have to say it was well worth it. We each selected the Menu #1, in which you get 1 appetizer, 1 entree and a dessert per person. For $40, I feel it was worth the price. I had a choice between the salmon or skate wing. I asked the waiter which one should I get and he responded, "You can get salmon anywhere, and if you were going to try skate wing then this is the place." I chose the skate wing. I'm sure the salmon would have been fine too, but I think I made the right choice. It was delicious. I also loved the chocolate cake for dessert (Fyi, it takes 15 minutes to prepare so order ahead of time). We will definitely be going back here."

"As their menu explains - Chapeau is French for "hat," but, with the exclamation mark, "chapeau!" means "WOW!"
