"My husband and I really like Roots; we had the occasion to meet with some friends that we hadn't dine with in years....Roots was the perfect spot. Service was impeccable; we found ourselves talking too much and were never ready to order...the waiters were very patient. The food was good and our friends enjoyed it too.

"This place is just wonderful. Food is certainly worth the price and the ambiance is just great. You wouldn't figure this grade of restaurant would be in the location that it is in. Even from the outside, you can't really tell how nice the interior is until you step through that tall wooden door and are shown to your booth. This is my 2nd time here, the previous time I came by was a little over a year ago and the food quality is still consistently high. I think I will have to shorten the time before my next visit."

"We started with 2 small plates to share among the 3 of us: mussels & scallops. The scallops were great according to my daughter & me though my wife didn't care for them. . The mussels themselves were well liked by all of us though the "broth" was odd - very oily. Our daughter had the dungeness crab & avocado from the small plates as her main dish; delicious & loaded with crab. My wife had the lasagna: vegitarian with portabello mushrooms. Very good! I chose the Alaska Halibut. Wow! This was the best piece of fish I've ever had anywhere. Tender, flaky & flavorful. It was served with sticky rice & asparagus. We finished the meal with coffee & shared key lime pie that was very refreshing,. Great meal! Try it; you'll like it."

"Don't often travel out of Portland to
Dine bec we don't have to. But wanted something different. it was good, but wouldn't do it again. Partly, in a state where I don't have to pay 16.00 in taxes for a good meal, you'll need to blowy socks off to be great. Out of crab, which a few menu items called for tho they were willing to sub shrimp. Anyone think those two things are good subs for each other? Onion tart app was food, but barely warm. Asparagus soup had so much truffle oil that the next table commented on it. And it was otherwise not all that great. Ceasers look better ony home table. Were flexible and made a burger for my son but he ordered it med and it was rare. The filet and the halibut - outstanding."

"I have been to Roots many times and it is always a consistently good to great meal. It may not look like much from the outside, but it is a sure thing. The servers are a little slow at times and sometimes can be a little confused at the dishes and the ingredients, but the food always makes up for the service."

"We always enjoy eating at Roots. The food never disappoints, and the service is excellent. We were there during happy hour, and the noise level was louder than usual, but not so loud as to be off-putting. I'd recommend sitting at the chef's bar, where you can watch the food being prepared and chat with Brad Root and Scott, his head chef."

"Overall we really like Roots. We've been there before and had a very enjoyable experience but on this occasion it was less than stellar only because they were so busy. Due to their being so busy the waiters/waitresses didn't have as much time to be personable although they were still friendly and did their job well. Also, attributed to their busyness was the noise level. Being that it was Valentine's Day we would have liked it to be more low key, but what are you going to do when a place is so popular. Ultimately, we would definitely recommend Roots for the delicious food and on most normal nights a nice atmosphere."

"I hope to visit Roots on a non-holiday (we went on Valentine's Day). The food was tasty (although the crab appetizer had way too much avocado and not enough crab), but the service was incredibly slow. The bus staff and runners were all prompt and friendly, but our server was not great. We sat with our menus for a good 10 minutes before she even appeared in our section, let alone take our drink order. It took another 10-15 minutes to get our drinks -- we had already received and finished our appetizer before we received our drinks. And we still hadn't put in our order for dinner! I'm chalking this up to the holiday (although honestly, she didn't seem rushed and she certainly didn't apologize) and may try Roots again."
