Golden Beetle is rooted in the spices and flavors of the Mediterranean. Our Chef and owner Maria Hines was a 2009 James Beard Award winner for best Chef Northwest. Maria has recently been bestowed with the honor of being a semi-finalist for the James Beard 2013 most outstanding chef. Maria draws upon the cultures of Turkey, Greece, Lebanon, Israel, Egypt and others to present the Northwest’s best organic and seasonal ingredients from local farmers and foragers. Golden Beetle is the third restaurant in the country to receive Oregon Tilth’s esteemed organic certification. "The food had so many layers of flavor. Each small plate was a new adventure and we thoroughly enjoyed the 5 small plates we ate. The baba ganoush and muhammara were really amazing, we did not leave any left."

"The food was very good, we ordered many small plates. Some of the small plates were small on the portion, others were ample. Then we ordered two large plates and shared them all family style. Great for a group that is adventurous and wants to try a large variety of foods."

"We've been here twice, and both times the food was amazing. We didn't have anything on the menu that we didn't like (chicken and short ribs were great). Finished it off with baklava/cinnamon creme fraiche. The only drawback is that both times, the service was awkward (almost like they were zombies). Not enough to keep us from the great food though - highly recommended."

"The ambience was good - sort of dark, potentially romantic, clean. The food was flavorful (everything leaning towards the sweet side), but overpriced for what you get. I ordered the yogurt chicken, which had a fantastic couscous, but the chicken itself was fairly "rubbery" and likely mostly thigh meat (the sort of cuts you might expect in teriyaki). The garlic fries were tasty, but greasy, and the ribs packed a flavorful punch, though a bit too sweet. The staff was attentive, but in an uninterested and unfriendly way (both bar and dining room). Might be a good place for happy hour and drinking, but I wouldn't recommend it solely for dinner. We didn't try the mezze plates, though. One might have better luck going that route."

"I had a delightful meal at the Golden Beetle shared by a couple long-time friends. Although on this night (Memorial Day) there were probably more families with younger kids than the norm, the ambiance and service were excellent and the noise level seemed to provide flavor and intimacy. We ordered several small plates that were both wholesome and tasty. Some favorites included bulgur-lamb meatballs, salmon kefta over cucumber "noodles" and cauliflower salad. There are a few menu items that I would have liked to try - lest I hadn't gotten full, that will bring me back to Golden Beetle some time soon. The kitchen has the most beautiful mosaic adorned oven as an added visual treat."

"The Golden Beetle is a wonderful place to try some Mediterranean inspired dishes. We had a chickpea stew with Lebanese lamb sausage and a Moroccan dish that had cod with mussels. Both had wonderful flavors and were pretty close to similar dishes that we had had in the Mediterranean on our travels.
The service was spot on: very attentive without being overly bothersome.
The only negative were the desserts. I cannot recommend either of the dishes we tried. One was Baklava, but it bore no really resemblance to Baklava from Turkey or Greece. My suggestion is to come in for dinner and walk down the street for ice cream."

"My wife and I enjoy dining at restaurants where we can try several different dishes. Golden Beetle is perfect for that kind of an evening. Our main problem was that our eyes were bigger than our stomachs, but the left over pizza tasted just fine the next day. Wonderful flavors in the dishes we sampled and we'll be back to explore more of the menu."

"I took my Mom here for Mother's Day brunch. The atmosphere was very nice - Mom especially liked the stained glass hanging lamps. We ordered the Lamb Hash and the Sundried Tomato and Fennel Scramble. The Lamb Hash was very flavorful, and it wasn't too spicy for my Mom's tastes. The Sundried Tomato and Fennel scramble was great! I would strongly recommend this place!"

"Went in for the Monday Mac & Cheese night and ended up trying several dishes. The highlights were the flatbread, mixed olives and the cinnamon donuts! But don't get me wrong, everything we had was delicious and the mac & cheese is definitely worth the outing on a Monday night!"

"Went with a group of friends (8 couples). Service was appropriately friendly and helpful. Yummy cocktails and nice variety of delicious dishes great for sharing family style. Definitely something for everyone. Flat bread was tasty, nice take on brussel sprouts, great fries. For dinner licked the plate of ribs clean. Cod and clam was delicious also. For dessert you have to try the sour cherry crepe cake it's like nothing I have ever had before. All in all a great experience."

"From three prior visits I had a high opinion of this venue. However, I took guests there last Friday eve that I wanted to impress and left very disappointed. The service, as expected, was excellent. The french fries which I so enjoyed on prior visits were over done and cool. My guests both ordered the Yogurt Marinated Chicken with couscous, cabbage slaw and tzatziki upon my recommendation from a prior visit. Both dining companions found the slaw to be the only portion they really enjoyed. Chicken tough, couscous cold (maybe intentionally)and the tzatziki under par. I had the Savory Chickpea & Lemon Stew with Lamb Sausage which I liked though temp was low. The wine list is adequate. Enjoyed a Faustino Rioja Reserva, Spain ’05."

"Just ok. Have always wanted to try and saw a good opportunity with restaurant week. I was underwhelmed, considering Tilth is fantastic, it's easy to have high expectations. Hostess was surly, server was not attentive, there were cheap scratchy paper napkins. Food was meh - good flavors for the most part but quality seemed more like fast food rather than restaurant grade. Won't be back soon, maybe restaurant week next year."

"I must admit that I'm not wild about the flavor palate for a lot of Mediterranean food, so the fact that I wasn't awed by the food may have more to do with my tastes than the food itself. "This would not be a great choice if you're in a hurry or if you're looking for someplace quiet, but if you enjoy savoring a good meal in a lively atmosphere, I highly recommend it. The food is fresh and organic and very flavorful, and our server was friendly and helpful. We were here during the Seattle Restaurant Week promotion, but we'll definitely be back!"

"The food was fantastic (we were there on Seattle Restaurant Week: the rabbit pizza was delightful, as were the clams, carrot soup and cauliflower salad,) but the service was sub par. The hostesses, both at the front check-in and the one who sat us, were not welcoming. They did not look happy to be there, let alone happy to see us arrive. (We were dressed appropriately for the restaurant and didn't look out of place.) We were sat at a small table in the middle of the room, despite having a reservation. Then we waited a rather long time for our drinks, though once the drinks arrived and the orders were taken, the service picked up in both speed and quality. I would go again for the food, but with the hopes of better service."

"I was actually disappointed. I was excited to go, as I have heard great things about Golden Beetle, but I was underwhelmed. 50% of our dishes were too salty... The falafel was very good and the 3 dips were fun, but the lamb meatballs and the pork shank pita were just too salty. I have been to Tilth and love it, but sadly disappointed with Golden Beetle. Maybe my expectations were just too high? Good vibe though."

"I loved Golden Beetle the first two times I went. The food was delicious. It was perfectly flavored and seasoned. Those were both 5 star nights. The third time was a different story. The Brussels Sprouts had a lot more chilies than the prior two times. It was so heavily spiced I couldn't finish them. The spanakopita was too rich. Both my husband and I loved both dishes the first two times, but this time it was different. He described it as sharper. I thought it too creamy. My experience with Tilth was that it was inconsistent. When it was good, it was one of the best, but when it wasn't good it was disappointing. I am hoping this was a one time off night and will try it again in a few months."

"Review of Golden Beetle's new Mac and Cheese Monday: The mac and cheese was awesome! Hot, cheesy and fresh to order. Lots of choices and all in our party were very satisfied including a vegan, a gluten-free vegan, a mostly lactose free omnivore and me, an all-around omnivore. The romaine salad is not to be missed and who can argue with $2 Rainier tall boys? Can't wait to go again and try a new sauce/cheese/meat/veg combo."

"This was my first time here and bummed that it took me so long to get in here! Food, cocktails, and service were flawless. Our servers were so great, they were friendly and personable. "Overall, it was a good experience. The staff seemed uninspired and less than enthusiastic despite the food being interesting . We would hope the staff attitude will change as they realize that they are serving such fantastic food but that attitude may start at the top.
