Halcyon, Flavors from the Earth
Halcyon is a refined new restaurant dedicated to sustainability and a community perspective of food. Elegant presentation of rustic dishes, composed of locally sourced produce and proteins and served in an atmosphere of tranquil farmhouse chic, cements our place in the "locavore movement" and Charlotte"s palate. Our dining room showcases a stunning view of the Charlotte cityscape through a wall of windows. Bask in candlelight beneath a painting of mythological Halcyon at a table sculpted from natural wood and enjoy a magical combination of ambiance, ingredients, and the techniques of Chef Marc Jacksina.

"I visited for brunch on a Sunday afternoon, rainy day, after a week of travel. SO I was a little tired and worn out.
The food was delicious with decent aesthetic display. I had an egg omlette with crab meat. The crab was lightly battered and there was plenty of it. I couldn't pass on a dessert item, very unique and tasty. It was carrot cake meet PB&J. Quite creative and yummy. Next time in Charlotte this will be on the top of my list.
Looks like they have a decent cocktail menu as well!
I'd really like to come back to this place with a date for a Saturday dinner."

"First, I would like to give Halcyon a big thumbs up in their efforts to provide organic, local and regional fare. We started out with their mixed appetizer tray; very good and plenty to share amongst four friends. I tried the pasta special of the evening containing scallops and peas in a cream sauce. Although flavorful, the temperature of the dish was wrong and it didn't really give me the 'Wow' factor that the waiter's description had provided. My friend's bison burger was served well-undercooked. The waiter and management quickly responded to this and corrected the problem. To sum it up, their were a lot of little let downs with the food that led me to give the restaurant only 3-stars. I will give it another shot in future."

"The service was perfectly timed to allow for our showtime arrival next door, and generally over and above what we see at most restaurants - attentiviness without hovering. We ordered two small plates which were ample for sharing (a note on the menu suggests doing that!) and the presentation was beautiful - the dishes very good. We will definitely be returning to Halcyon!"

"Great location with view of downtown Charlotte. Although we had a reservation, seated near bar and service area looking at a wall. There were open tables in more relaxed areas and with a nice view (we were not offered outdoor seating although, again, there were open tables). I observed our waiter leaving shortly after taking our order. Others waiters took care of us, but we felt a bit orphaned. The food: good open-faced BBQ sandwich, good fries for my husband. I had grits with NC cheddar and 3 shrimp. The cheese was unremarkable, sliced thick and melted over the grits. It was not an enjoyable eating experience, and I was extremely disappointed. I expected to love this place, but cannot recommend."

"We went to Halcyon for lunch. Our service was excellent. The menu was nice, but did not feel unusual or particularly organic, etc. in contrast to what I'd been led to expect. I enjoyed it, but thought $19 was a bit much for a small salad with a few fried oysters on top. I will acknowledge that my friend ordered the BBQ and, in contrast, got a very large serving for half the price.(She took much of it home.) Perhaps find a happy medium?!?!"

"I personally found the brunch memu to be very confusing. The omelette, in particular, left a lot to be desired. the in house ketchup is far too sweet. I went on easter sunday and felt that the staff was not friendly, pretentious, and not familiar with the menu. While I enjoy the food, generally, and think the space is beautiful, there is a lot of room for improvement. Not sure I'll be back anytime soon."

"Whew. We had the most random and SLOW service. Also, our food came out totally wrong(the Beef of the day was supposed to be a ribeye and a filet was served). Further, the food was confused across the parties and stagered unacceptably. I love Halcyon but this experience made me think twice about whether I wanted to deal with returning. The food is excellent. The server was not helpful at all with wine or beer. She didn't know what Yuengling was??"

"Pleasantly suprised with the location. Easy parking right underneath the restaurant. We sat by the floor to ceilng window looking out over Charlotte. We had a business party of 8 and were well taken care of by our waiter. Food choices were prepared differently giving excitement to dinner. Defintely try the cornbread appetizer. We went on a Thursday night and they had live music that was pleasant to listen to but a little loud for the small restaurant making it hard to have a conversation with a party of 8.
I definitely would reccomend it."

"We had a late lunch here while in town for a food conference. Halcyon was recommended by a local friend of one of our group. We tried most of the lunch menu and thought it was just phenomenal. Favorite dish was the "Market Bowl" but everything was very fresh, flavorful, and delicious. Our server was attentive and friendly; quite knowledgeable about the menu and the quantity we were ordering. It was the best meal we had while in Charlotte. Would love to try it for dinner next time I'm in town."

"Wonder dishes using only local and regional foods, in unexpected ways. Fexample, beet cheesecake?! Absolutely! Adds an earthy tang to a staple dessert. Enjoy a starter and entree for your meal, or discover one small dish after another as we did, a perfect way to get acquainted with a new friend -- one interesting flavor and story and a time. The decor is as natural as the food, with carved hardwood tables, expansive glass walls, and simple lighting, but the hard surfaces amplify raucous groups, so the noise level spiked at times. The view of uptown was spectacular. This was the perfect spot for meeting and getting to know the daughter of a good friend who just moved to the city. We will always remember our Halcyon night!"

"After hearing so much hype around this Halcyon I took a group from work here for dinner. The food was good, but the staff was not warm and welcoming at all, very uncomfortable experience and we were not made to feel welcome and relaxed at all. With over a $400 bill just for dinner not alcohol someone needs to tell the owners and the servers who the customers are in the establishment. Won't be visiting again anytime soon. Save yourself an uncomfortable evening and select another place for your dinner or lunch dollars."

"I started out with the Beef Tartare....excellent. The fried pickle beans were incredible. For my meal I ordered and looked forward to the Lamb, which I had not had in a while. After 15 minutes or so the waitress came back to the table and told me they were already out of lamb....in was 7:15?? I believe they most likely never had any for the evening. She did not offer a menu but asked if it would be OK to substitute the duck in the dish. In retrospect I would have liked to seen the menu again and ordered something else. Our waitress was very attentive, but had some trouble remembering the adjective-filled food descriptions on the menu. We were seated next to the window....great view of the city! Great patio dining for Spring."

"Beautiful restaurant with unique decor including tables made from slabs of cut trees, gorgeous lighting fixtures, and comfy chairs and pillows. Scenic view of uptown was great too as you are seated on the second floor above the Mint Museum. Waiter was great, service very good. Amazing "libations" menu with yummy options that were very pricey - wine and beer list extremely pricey as well. About $17 a glass of wine and the same for a beer. My husband and I had meals from the specials - about $36 each but were delicious. Two of our friends had salads - both salads were above room temperature warm and barely edible. Three of our friends got the burger and two enjoyed, but the third had to send his burger back as it was not cooked as requested."

"All of the food was wonderful. Wish I could say the same for the waitress we had... She must have walked by our finished appetizer plates seven times before finally the hostess came and cleared them from our table. This was the case with each course we were served. Made a good meal and a special night for us a little less so... We would go back for the food, but would make sure we had a different waiter to work with."

"The service is bizzare! The food was ok but nothing to brag about. The pig ears were the best thing they had going. The wine list is not special at all. Parking is a total pain and its far from anything else in downtown. We wanted to try it but will NeVER go back."

"Our Valentine dinner started with a rude hostess refusing, for no apparent reason, to seat us at a different table. She said they were booked. Well, duh! It was Valentine's Day. I just couldn't figure out why some other 2 people were more important than we were. Yes, we had reservations. Five minutes after we sat down, she came up and said it was ok for us to move. We said never mind. People were finally seated at the other table more than 30 minutes after we came in. F. Y how something seemingly minor leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
The food was good - especially the s'mores creme brûlée. Service was great."

"Nice combination of modern and quiet comfort, with enthusiastic, knowledgeable service. The pumpernickel bread pudding we started with was superb, both light and crisp in parts, subtle, well-balanced flavors. The small plate clams were too salty, heavy on a not very interesting broth. Small plate scallops were delicious, lightly and interestingly seasoned and very tender. Cauliflower: sad to say, boring and a bit over-cooked. The flavored butter to go with sour dough bread swamped the taste of the bread, but wasn't itself uninteresting. And the beet, chèvre cheesecake dessert? Interesting idea, but turned out bland (we differed on the ganache; not sure it added much except an alternative to the cheesecake). All around? Interesting."
