"Pros: quirky atmosphere & tasty local food
Cons:
- A full drink was taken away that we didn't like and we were still charged for it. The server seemed put out by being a server and don't think they smiled once.
- Smaller then typical portions, had appetizer and entree and left hungry.
- Quite a sad beer list considering all the great local brews Portland has to offer.
There's too many great restaurants in Portland to go back to this one."

"Had been interested in dining at this restaurant for some time and found it to be over rated sadly. Decent service with the exception of wait staff unable to get me a knife that would cut through the lamb that had too much sinew and greens that were undercooked. Nice nettle soup, though we felt we shouldn't have had to ask for a piece of bread to accompany it. Same feeling regarding the mussels. Why no bread? Over all, good ingredients with medium preparation"

"Four of us (2 couples) met at Ned Ludd for a quick dinner before going to a play at Portland Playhouse. We drank some tasty rose wines and split 4-5 dishes, mostly salads & veggies and one trout. The greens and veggies were seasonal and the dressings and seasonings perfect. The plates were more than adequate for sharing 4-ways. The trout was de-boned, baked whole and delicious!. The service was very good and kept us on time - we needed to eat and square up in a little over an hour. We'll definitely be back."

"The service was really excellent, and our server was kind enough to inform me that the pork noodles were indeed noodles made from pork skin, and my decision to order it was purely adventurousness on my part. That said, it wasn't particularly flavorful, and I would certainly shy away from that particular entree in the future. On the other hand, my wife's trout was excellent, as were the braised greens I ordered.
The decor, designed to create the appearance of a rustic barn interior or something, feels like a art directed half measure. I get it, the name of the restaurant celebrates the Ludites, who rejected modernity and technology, but I just feel surrounded by dust catchers.

"Our food was really good, the atmosphere is fun. Our server was a bit pretentious. She acted annoyed every time she came to the table and we didn't stop talking immediately to pay attention to her. And she took my wine glass before I had had that last sip. Bad form!
Otherwise, a fun place."

"Ned Ludd is my favorite Portland restaurant. It's low key but perfect. Everything is hand made and beautifully presented. The staff is efficient and nice. The chefs don't seem capable of making mistakes. Frequently I go out to dinner and regret spending the money on food I could make at home on an off night. Ned Ludd serves complex dishes I'd never think to make and they are all perfect and flavorful and I love the relaxing pace of service."

"All the food was exceptionally good in both taste and presentation--except for dessert. We ordered the "chocolate chip cookie". What came was a burnt brownie in a cast iron skillet. Cute presentation but there was no getting around that is was most certainly not a chocolate chip cookie. We told the waitress that it was burnt and she said they call that "oven kissed". Hmmm. She took it back and took it off our bill. It was a shame to end with a burnt brownie. Perhaps they need to hire a pastry chef."

"I went to Ned Ludd very near its opening. "It's called WHAT!!?? It's WHERE!!??? Over the years, I've been there often, many times with out-of-towners. They and I have never not been impressed with the quality of food, the warmth and knowledgability of the servers. I have never had a bad moment at this place. Please, Jason et al, keep doing what you do. You are in the pleasure business."

"I appreciate the ambition of Ned Ludd: both in design and in food. Service was excellent, and my salad of toasted farro was outstanding; extremely flavor forward, distinct and bright. As a vegetarian, I might not go back to Ned Ludd, but this is probably more about me scrutinizing the menu then the menu being at fault. I liked the space and the high ceilings, but found the attempts at "haphazard charm" overly designed. The pews are fun, but very uncomfortable and I actually sat on my puffy coat because I was feeling odd vertigo looking up at the waiter and my spouse. Thank you for a memorable birthday."

"Had a fabulous dinner from cocktails to dessert and coffee. We will certainly go back there soon! Everyone at our table loved their fish preparations - whole boneless trout to steelhead. The small plates were a huge hit with everyone, especially the pickles and heavenly roasted vegetables. Our fruit in light pastry was a lovely way to end the meal."

"We heard accolades about Ned Ludd, but the food we had was so mediocre, we were quite surprised. The squash was not fully cooked and the spices did nothing but ruin the taste. The brusselsprouts were burned to a crisp, black. The best taste came from the iced tea, and that came in a tiny glass with too much ice."

"Named one of Portland Monthly's best new restaurants of 2012, I thought this would rank among some of the best meals I've had in Portland. Unfortunately, the meal left our group with something to be desired. Flavor. We shared several small plates in an effort to try as much of the menu as possible. The recurring comment? "This is really good and fresh, but it needs something. It is just kind of bland." The charcuterie plate was primarily pate and pate-like substances. The mussels were just a little too fishy smelling and tasting. The best thing we ate was the farro salad.Would I go here again? Probably not considering all the other amazing places left to try in Portland."

"Major service fail, although the food that we did have was pretty good. It started out well with some excellent cocktails, then we ordered the beets and arugula to share. We wanted some bread, but had to wait 10 minutes (and pay $5) for the crispy flatbread, which seemed to be the only bread option. Not what we really wanted. But we made the best of it and enjoyed the wine while waiting for our main dishes. When they came, mine was not what I ordered. Major fail - I had even discussed in detail with the waiter the dish that I ordered, yet he apparently put in a completely different order. That meant another lengthy wait, with no apologies, and no refills on my empty wine glass, and finally we just asked for the check and bailed. Too bad."

"Try the meatball or lamb dish if you're in soon. Trout wasn't great. Brussel sprouts are nice, squash was boring, salads were great. I would call this a must visit."

"This was my second time to Ned Ludd and a far departure from my first time. Our salads were prepared with care but the oven roasted Brussel sprouts where charred to the point of being black. We had to pick away the ash to eat them. Also the oven roasted squash was burnt black as well and we had the scrape away the skin from the bottom and the ash from the top to eat just the middle. The trout was way overlooked not moist at all which was a shame because the trout on m first visit was so amazing that was why I returned. The lamb was so under cooked we could not cut it with our knife even though it was suppose to be medium rare. Our waitress did not inquire why our entrees sat untouched. She just cleared and presented the bill."

"After reading the reviews, I expected much more. First, this is not a date place. It is loud and the tables are packed closely together. The food was just that - food. We ordered the kale and brussel sprouts for appetizers. Kale was good and had a good balance. The sprouts were somewhat charred and the spices were in there somewhere. It was difficult to taste anything other than something hot to the mouth. For the main, we ordered trout and sole. Trout was fair to good at best. Sole, I prefer the menus description to the actual meal. There was no flavor in the watered down cream on top of a tasteless sole. This entree was extremely bland. And finally the wine, the fancy names on the list are only to intrigue you to spend money."

"All food is cooked in a wood fired oven. Our server described each dish we asked about. She was able to tell us the ingredients for those on a special diet and the chef was willing to adjust any recipes he could. The food was different and excellent. Each dish was attractive. The atmosphere was warm and comfortable. We were not rushed."

"Everything was very well done and very resonably priced. The charcuterie board was outstanding and I love a good carignane. I highly recommend. I wish they carried more meat dishes, but flavors were very well executed all around."

"Went for the Valentines Day special meal- wish I'd kept the menu as I won't get it all quite right. Wine pairings were intelligently done and complemented the duck breast, beef with anise coating nicely. Appetizer of dehydrated kale paired with prosciutto was inspired. Valentines mood music was a plus. Handled gluten and dairy freeness with poise."

"My new favorite Portland restaurant. We had a fabulous meal at the beautifully acquainted Ned Ludd. We had the waiter just bring his favorite foods and we munched out on a diverse array of small plates. Lovely wine selection. Our waiter was a total pro. Cannot wait to go back!"

The chef is superb in the use of unusual ingredients in creative ways, but was working with quite good, but not the very, very finest ingredients.

"First off they have no signage anywhere to let you know where they are - at night you almost have to come to a complete stop in the middle of the street to see where they are.. frustrating! The decore? I get it, it's supposed to be 'trendy' but I was expecting Jed, Granny and Jethro to pop out from behind a corner. The shaved carrot salad which was excellent; but when it came to the rest of the food the presentation was nice but it was extremly bland and needed salt. It could have been much better with just some small tweaks. Their website promotes a fine dining experience, and others may enjoy drinking from mason jars, but I found it confusing. At least the service was friendly and food was prompt getting out..."
