Home Tasting Room is a wine-centric restaurant serving market–fresh sustainable food, with an "Old made New" twist. The warm and inviting ambiance will make you feel as if you are at "HOME". Executive Chef James Waters showcases his artisan flare with the best available ingredients in a small plates tasting format to encourage sharing and exploration by our guests.
With over 50 selections in our wine inventory at any given time, we want you to experience and taste as many wonderful wines as possible. "Everything about this restaurant was fantastic right from the moment we entered the door. The service was excellent, the food was top notch!! No wonder this restaurant was rated top 10 in Calgary. We have dined at some of the other restaurants on the top 10 list and not sure why this one wasn't rated number 1. Certainly far superior then some of the other restaurants listed!!

"Went on a Friday evening. Waitress was not attentive, almost dismissal, made no effort to discuss the menu items when choosing dishes to try and made no effort to describe the "tasting dishes" selected. Tasting dishes were very average for the cost. There are many much better restaurants in Calgary to experience."

"Booked the restaurant for a Mother's Day dinner and it did not disappoint. The waiter was knowledgeable and attentive, the food was great and the ambience was fine and modern. Would definitely go back for the gnocchi and bison tartar appetizers and the arctic char and lamb shoulder mains. Good find and highly recommended."

"enjoyed the patio.move the cushions, not the breathable kind. Food is amazing, i recommend the oysters, then a sharing plate for each person at the table, but all share. Even the lunch menu is really good- had the chicken sandwich with 'greens' and the mac and cheese. both were delicious, and pricing is comparable to other places on 8th that are of lower quality. Great patio location, gets the sun where TD (Met, Earls) does not yet, as lower buildings, North side of the ave as well. Quieter area, but great for people watching. recommend getting there by 1130 to get the seat you want, as it gets more popular, might need to get there for 11.Our server disappeared, so waited 30 min for the bill until a manager showed up flustered?? strange."

"From beginning to end, my palette enjoyed the sweet fruit flavors infused in each course. From the blueberry tea with grand marnier, to the Artisan greens with the Raspberry Vinaigrette....then to the Goat Cheese & Roasted Garlic Raviolis with Lemon Butter and Cranberries...and finishing with the Lemon and Vanilla Rice Pudding with touches of Berry Coulis...i mean do i need to explain more about the food? Actually i do!! Several people will probably knock this restaurant because of the lack of food options, but I say that a limited menu will allow the restaurant to perfect their dishes...and did they ever. If you live or are visiting in Calgary and haven't been here, GO!! It's a comfortable feeling in the restaurant and so relaxing."

"The food was excellent but service very slow and not necessarily the wait staff's fault. Given that they have to prepare their own tables drinks, it becomes a 15-20 minute affair to get your drink order, especially if they have a large table, or number of tables ordering close together. A full time bartender would be worth his weight in gold for improving the customer experience I would think."

"I have been wanting to eat at "Home" for quite awhile and was not disappointed.

"We wanted to try this restaurant after their selection as a top 10 restaurant in Calgary. They started off the evening well in recognizing our special occasion (my wife's birthday) by bringing our table of 3 their duck pate appetizer. It was excellent, creamy smooth and delicately flavoured. We shared the gnocchi small plate as an appetizer. The gnocchi came across as a little bland; good if you ate with the cheese garnish but lacking flavor if eaten on its own. The beet salad small plate was delicious. All three of us had the day's special entree which was scallops with pork belly. Very, very tasty but the portions were very small, only 2 scallops and literally 2 cubic inches of pork belly. The lentils served with it were delicious."

"I just had another great meal here. Had frois gras sliders and bison tar tar for api, and both were fantastic.
Had the pulled pork sandwich as main and as simple as it looked, it had amazing flavour (could have used a more interesting bun/bread and presentation so it did not appear so pedestrian). Everyone else at the table really enjoyed their fare.
The server was below average. She came back and check on if she had remembered our orders correct, and they were completely wrong. I had a 1/4 of a beer left in the bottle and she cleared it from the table. She did not know much about the dishes they serve."

"My colleague and I went to lunch here. The service was good but the food was very sub-par. Had the chicken salad sandwich and have never experienced anything as mayonnaise-y as this dish. Also had the potato & leek soup which had the most bizarre lingering spice.

Flavors were great.
Service was good, yet not quite as attentive or quick as we expected. Had 2 hours for dinner and had tickets to the theater. We did have 3 courses, sharing plates, main, and dessert, but we felt more rushed than at other restaurants with the same time constraints.

"I really enjoyed my dinner at Home Tasting room. I was dinning alone and decided to sit at the bar. That turned out to be a great option since it is an open kitchen and you can watch the Chef's cook. It was also nice because the server would point out the finished meals so I could get an idea of what to order. I ended up with braised lamb and it was delicious. I would highly recommend Home Tasting Room."

"I have wanted to try Home Tasting Room for a while, so a group of us from work went there recently. The space is an interesting blend of old (building), and modern (decor). It is very nicely done and pleasant place to be. Things started off OK and we started to order a series of small plates for sharing. The food was good, but not outstanding. Problems started to develop with the service later on in the evening. Despite not being very busy, the dishes were quite slow coming out of the kitched. Progressively, this became more of a problem to the point that it appeared that the kitchen brigade were more interested in cleaning up rather than preparing our food. The automatic 18% tip for larger groups was not deserved."

"Had dinner with a group of four on Monday night. This is an elegant place with a nice ambiance and very good food. On this particular evening, it was VERY loud, courtesy of just one or two happy & talkative tables - it wasn't a busy night. Spacing guest out around the room might have worked to reduce the noise level!
The quality and value of the food here is a high point. Well prepared, nicely presented and great tasting plates. Not pretentious at all, just really good food, mostly in a bistro style with plenty of choices for "sharing" appetizers.
Although the wait-staff were pleasant enough, there didn't seem to be a level of knowledge or attentiveness that one would expect from a calibre of restaurant like this. That was disappointing."

"I had the lamb burger with cherry compote and arugula on a freshly made roll, accompanied by tomato-fennel soup. The soup had a delicate sweet edge that nicely accented the acid from the tomatoes, and the texture was divine. There were sunflower seeds sprinkled in the soup that really enhanced the flavor and textural experience. The burger was juicy and tender and flavorful, and the cherries really set off the meatiness of the lamb. I couldn't have enjoyed it more. I will definitely return for more lunches and dinners!"

"Loved the interior of the resturaunt, the waiter was friendly and helpful and the food was absolutely fantastic!
We had the Big Taste menu and nothing disappointed - the soup was delish and the burger with the bleu cheese was amazing. Hope some of these options come back onto the main menu as seasonal features as I'd love to have them again."

"Went for Big Taste, the menu looked interesting but came out average. Things took way to long to come out of the kitchen, 50 minutes with no main course. My friend had to go back to work with her burger in a take out box. I ate dessert alone. No manager on for lunch, so the server ran around trying to figure things out. Took off my friends half eaten meal from the bill. It was the best part of the experience, the server really tried hard but it was a lot late. I am sure his other tables suffered to, ridiculous to have no manager. With so many other options on Steven Ave. I don't know if I'll be back. Try it for yourself though if your taking a 2 hour lunch."

"Our excellent waiter Michael made this first experience at Home Tasting Room a memorable one. He was very professional from begnning to end, providing wine suggestions and generally very attentive. We had the tasting menu and one person had something from the main menu. I know they prefer that we all order from the same menu but the chef was gracious enough to allow an exception. Everything was delicious and in perfect proportions."

"Had the Big Taste Lunch menu. Ordered the soup and burger. Both were amazing. The burger was one of the best I've ever had.
Only gave 3/5 for service. Overall the service was fantastic, however at the end when the waiter asked how the hot chocolate & cookies were, we responded "cookies are excellent, but is the hot chocolate supposed to be "hot"? because it's quite chilled". But the waiter had simply walked away once he heard excellent. I'm not a fan of being asked a question if the answer is not actually cared to be received.
Other than that the lunch was awesome. I can't wait to return."

"Modern, but earthly setting. Easy-going atmosphere. Lovely food. Good service. We had a unique endive salad with honey comb - it was sweet and tangy; a lamb shoulder which would have been great except for a bit too much braise jus; and a beef short rib with truffle polenta which was fantastic. A touch pricey, but the meals were very nice. We would recommend it for a nice dinner out."
