Capannina
Everything about Capannina is soft and subtle. The decor - celadon green upper walls, ambra marble below, handmade glass lamps, hanging mirror panels and faux columns that glow from the lights behind them - is simple yet striking. The marble, the lamps, and many of the ingredients used in the excellent dishes are all imported from Italy and the subtle softness of the interior extends to the food: eclectic Italian with an emphasis on Southern Italian tradition while still maintaining well-orchestrated choices from all over Italy. With pasta made in-house and delightfully fresh buffalo mozzarella coming from Italy, Capannina offers the essence of subtlety in the artistic presentation of its menu, along with an atmosphere that conveys the slightest California touch. PLEASE NOTE: We serve a prefix menu, consisting of a three-course dinner for $25 per person every day from 5:00pm to 6:00pm.
Thereafter, we serve a regular menu.

"We dine here every time we visit Sn Francisco,, about four times a year. This trip we ate there twice. There is no better authentic Italian cuisine in SF. Pastas are perfect, especially the pappardelle. The service is as all restaurants should be; very friendly, but always aware of the needs of the diners.Feels very comfortable, but ,nothing like the typical noisy little Italian place with crowded tables. No, this place is a proper, but never intimidating, dining experience."

"A group of 6 went for our birthdays, they reserved a great window table looking right out onto Union street. They were ready for us when we arrived and service was prompt. Even with a full restaurant the service was great.
The food was very yummy and with good quantities. I cannot be specific about one dish, but everyone cleaned their plates!
The owner/manager (not sure which) kept checking to make sure everything was ok.
The place is VERY loud, which was probably good for our slightly obnoxious group of women, but it would be very hard to hear over a conversation at a normal level.
I enjoyed this place and hope to return soon!"

Rich spicy tomato sauce with generous amount of perfect briny sweet shrimp. Fiancé enjoyed salmon with an unusual vegetable accompaniment of artichokes and fennel with olives, capers and tomatoes. "The food is amazing and the ambiance delightful. One of our favorite restaurants and Michele (the owner)couldn't be nicer or more accommodating. The same can be said of Sergio, one of our favorite waiters.
They have an "early bird" dinner from 5-7PM which is unblievable. Same portion of food as on the regular menu which includes a choice of three first courses, four or five entrees and you get to pick any desert from the menu...all for $25. Bargain of the century if you don't mind eating on the early side."

"We invited friends to join us for our second visit to Capannina and were delighted to find the same delicious, inventive, high quality offerings served by the very attentive staff. I chose the Risotto Nero, a signature dish, paired with Caesar Salad topped with chunks of Dungeness Crab--fabulous! My husband loves the Beef Carpaccio and ordered the Tuscan Brick-pressed chicken. He shared tastes and all of us decided to return just for that dish alone. Oysters were wonderful and our friend's selection of Sea Bass wrapped in pancetta was another winner. Our server recommended a good chianti and we shared the Warm Chocolate Cake with Hazelnut ice cream. Can't wait to come back next time we're in the city."

"Due to the lack of parking, we had a bit of a rushed dinner(my wife was speaking at a nearby school) but the staff were able to still make it a pleasurable experience. I picked the restaurant for it's price fixe menu that had a Caesar salas with crab(lovely combo) and a grilled salmon with asparagus. I had seen the menu online, but was informed that the asparagus was no longer part of the PF meal, but they would do it for me, which was nice. Both were excellent. I'd order the full Caesar next time just to have more of it. The dressing was no a true Caesar but that was fine as it allowed the crab to be tasted. My wife had ravioli stuffed with beef shanks. Quite delicate and tasty. Wine was expensive for what you got. Will definitely return."

"Overall, good place for dinner for two. I enjoyed my prosciutto raviolli, and ceasar salad with crab. However, my wife said her paparadelle sauce was too sweet, and didn't finish it. Enjoyed everything else, including post dinner espresso and cappuchino!"

"We have made a habit of dining at Capannina whenever we are in San Francisco (we live in Oregon). They never disappoint. The beef carpaccio starter was perfect. The two pasta courses were wonderful. Papperdelle is not that often on menus, and with wild boar ragu, it was a find. The tortalini, last item in the primi course, was wonderful! Don't think that has been on the menu before.Sadly, after a too large lunch, we did not have time for a secondi. Next time. We had one dessert, custard filled Profiteroles. Perfect.
This is a Union Street restaurant that offers everything the truly upscale and expensive places offer, in a comfortable setting at at a reasonable price."

"We had heard about the restuarant a while ago and it was highly recommended. Finally dined there and was greatly pleased. Very accommodating and we had asked for a quiet table and the request was pleasantly met.
All the food was excellent, especially outstanding the appetizers and dessert - and the gnocchi which was melt in your mouth tender.

"We showed up for our reservation and was seated promptly. The waiter was very helpful with his suggestions. He explained that the amount of food we thought we should order was probably more than we needed. Which was a very pleasant surprise. The food was very good. We will return. The only problem we had was of course the parking, but that is to be expected because of the neighborhood."

Service at such venues can be short, even arrogant. Not here. As the evening
evolved so did our interactions with our server warm with good humor. Enjoy!"

"After reading numerous good reviews, I decided to take my friend from out of town to dinner here the other night. I was really disappointed. The service was terrible - the bus person actually took my salad away mid-bite (and only halfway finished) because our main course had just come out of the kitchen, I had to ask multiple times for a water refill, and overall the servers just seemed busy and distracted. The food was very mediocre - reasonably priced for what it was I guess, but nothing note-worthy. It was extremely noisy. I doubt I'll return."
